are announced and an agreement as to coal
mining is more than probable, but some

Railway earnings thus far reported for
January were 7. TO per cent larger than a
year ago.
Closing or large contracts for pig iron for
the leading Interest proved an element of
strength In the iron and steel Industry that
Improves the tone and makes the outlook
for the nrst quarter most satisfactory.

packer lines are rainy steady and no di

Oolf association held its annual meeting
here tonight. The executive committee an
nounced that th Ekwanok club and the
Brae Burn Country club had been elected
to membership. The annual report nf the
association showed a total membership of
clubs numbering 293, of which thirty are as
sociate clubs and 263 allied clubs. During
the last year fourteen clubs were admitted
to membership and nlno clubs cither re
signed or were dropped.

N BW YORK, Jan. 19. President Harry
C. Pulliam of the National Base Ball league
and President Ban Johnson of the Amer
ican league were In conference here today
for several hours and arrived at an agree
ment as to the general features of tl.e play
ing schedules of the two leagues during tho
coming season. It was agreed that the
American leuaue season should open In the
east April 14 and In the west April 17. The
onlv playing arrangement announced by
President Johnson was that the Boston
American league team would open the sea
son In New York, the two clubs ihen going
to Bofclon to open there on Lexington day.
The National league reserved the right to
open its season In Brooklyn April 12. but
no dates were announced for the opening In
other cities. There will be few conltlctlng
