NEW TORK. Jan. 17 -The features of to
day's stock market was the speculative
operations in a number of storKS which
nave been exhaustively exploited In tne
speculation of the Immediate past and
which parsed through a period of prottt
tHklng subsequent to that speculation.
There was a lively renewal In the same con
nection of a great variety of rumors, mostly
pointing to combinations and mergers.
which have already played a principal part
In the advances effected In those stocks.
The capacity demonstrated by the move
ment fur the completion of a digestive
process of profit-taking In the market and
a sull furtner advance in the stocks af
fected made a considerable impression on
speculative sentiment. The reversion of
tne market operations to these stocks was
accompanied by constant profit-taking at
other points of the list. Tills extended to
many stocks which showed strength in the
earlier part of the day, so that they were
made to yield their gains In the subsequent
dealings. The most conspicuous example
of the reversion of the speculation to
former channels was that of Union Pa
cific. This was subjected to some further
extensive profit-taking In the earlier part
of the day, but It broke through this re
straint later and rose to a new record level
above with marked effect on the gen
eral speculative sentiment. The Smelting
and Metal stocks were another example of
this tendency In the market. Smelting and
lead both rose to new record levels. Amal
gamated Copper was kept down or forced
back when It did advance by a constant
stream of realising sales. The news con
cerning these properties was plentiful, but
was entirely In the form of rumors. The
settlement of the Montana copper war, a
merger of the smelting and lend companies
and a gigantic combination of all the cop
per mining, smelting and allied metal lu
dustries are samples of the character of
these rumors.
The actual news of the day was not Im

market was atjioc lower. It Is needless to
add that the trade was extremely slow and
dull. Sellers mails a strong, fight against
the Inevitable and they would not give up
so long as there was the slightest chance

was that It was well along toward mid. lay

ward. It goes without savins that such
conditions are bound to bring uDout a weak
and lower market not only here, but at
every other selling point.
The receipts locally were not large thla
morning, oniy a few over twenty cars being
in sigiu, which was small for tne middle of
tne week and short of the supply of one
and two Weeks ago. At the same time it
waa plenty large enough considering the
condition of the market. As hinted above
the truue was slow and weaa and generally
lower than yesterday, 'lo call it right
around 26c lower than last week would not
miss the actual condition of the market
very far. Colorado and western lan.ba both
sold tip to i.2B. but tney were good. Some
westein eariings sold at fti.lO, uut It lanes
good stuff to bring that puce. Several cars
of Colorado ewes went at to .30 and to. 2b.

Metal Market.
VEW YORK. Jan. 17. METALS There
was another sharp break In the Indon tin
market, with spot closing at 163 6s and fu
tures at 164 6a. with a continuation of con
ditions noted yesterday. The local market
was steady but unchanged, with spot closed
at tS.Vn 36 6tt. Copper had quite a sharp
break abroad, with spot closing at 78 6s
and futures at 7u l&s. Locally the market
market here was not very strong on
killers. ,
There was a very fair supply of beef
steers in sight this morning but the q..i.ltly
was none too good on an average, al
though there was some quite gojil lots.
The market waa not very active and wl.ile
there was no very great change in any
direction the feeling was weak and the
tendency of prices a little lower.
The supply of cows and heifers wss larger
than usual, there being not far from lifty
cars on sale. The quality also averaged
up fairly good, that is there were quite a
number of loads of very decent stuff. The
msrket was In a good deal of the same
condition as was that on beef steers. That
Is. It was not very active ar.d prices had a
lower tendency. In fact, they were lower
as a rule, unless It might be on aomctnlng
that Just happened to take the eye of a
buyer.
Blockers and feeders were In small sup
ply as usual of late while there was a
good demand. In consequence of this the
trade was quite brisk at good strong prices.
