their drinks In Omaha were in hard lines.
They couldn't pay the enr fare, and If a

here, they found It hard to hg drinks or

South Omaha was open n usual, but there
re rumors of n change. The Fire and
Police Board makes the swieping assertion
that when It comes the lid will be screwed
so tight that not even a "squeal" will
escape. "We are ready." said Mr. Ber
qulst, "a soon as we see that Omaha
means business, or as soon as the Board
of Fire and Police Commissioners in Omaha
give direct orders for the closing of all
saloons In Omaha, to adopt the same policy
here. We don't wnnt to make the move
on our own initiative for tho reason that
local business would be materially hurt
by reason of open saloons In Omaha, which
has its share of attractions already. And
further, when we adopt the policy we want
to put it in force for good, and I wlil say
this, that we will enforce It straight
through our administration ns long as w
are here. We arc waiting to see that policy
made the order of action on the part of
the Omaha commission."
Democrats Warming- I p.
Affairs in the democratic camp are be
ginning to take on some form, but It .1
not safe to predict for a good while yet
who will become the nominees. So far
there have been no tilings by democrat
of persons desiring to hold the public of
fice, but hints have been dropped by those
who are closest to the pulse of the party
which Indicates there is something in the
air. It now appears reasonably sure the
hottest battle will be for the nomination
for mayor. It Is likely that D. 6. Park
hurst will be one corner of a triangular
fight, with Dr. T. H. Elisor another, while
a third man who has never yet figured In
the political arena has appeared on the
political offing. Samuel Schrlgley will be
a candidate for councilman from the Sixth
ward. Mr. Schrlgley has figured In former
political contests and Is well known.
Thomas M. Geary and Andrew M. Galla
gher will probably have to fight It out for
the nomination for the office of treasurer.
It Is hardly thought probable that there
will be any opposition to W. C. Lambert
for city attorney, nor for J. J. Glllln as
city clerk. It Is possible that candidates
may arise. It is said that the democratic
candidate for the vacancy on the school
board will be Samuel Acher of the firm of
N. E. Acher & Co. at the Exchange. Fur
ther, It is declared that he Is to appear
as a strictly neutral candidate with re
gard to what Is commonly called the Mc-Loan-Laverty
factions.
Boar Day for Police.
The South Omaha police made a larrr
number of arrests last night, the most of
which were for intoxication and vagrancy.
Among others, they picked up Charies Zi
enda, whom they are holding for the sheriff
of Platte county. Zleuda is wanted for a
statutory crime, which it Is alleged had
been perpetrated by him at Columbus, Nell.
There arc five suspects to be tried this
morning and It Is barely possible that n.'
or two of them will be connected with re
cent holdup jobs. Chief among these Is
Dick lender, commonly known as Dagj
Dick. Wtlllahl Hughes and Anton Dona
hue are others who fall under suspicion.
There were five revolting candidates for the
Institution for the correction of dlspso
manla lodged in one of the cells. They
were all of one caliber and all suffering
from the malady commonly called "the
snakes." Every one of them was "ee!n'
things." Captuln Turnqulst said If he could
possibly secure their acceptance at Lincoln
he would surely send the whole bunch to
the Insane hospital for treatment. Thry
were William O'Neill, "One-Eyed" Riley.

Imaginary tormentors stripped himself and
chased them about the narrow boundaries
of the room, while the others watched his
