8 TIIE OMAIIA DAILY BEE: SUNDAY, JANUARY 14, 190(5. B WCRR DONE BT THE CRECHE Annual prt of Gffisert Ihowi'Qood Tear. FIUR HUNDRED CHILDREN ENROLLED Vkit Efforts Fall nail Hoitr 4 What Bneeeed No Deaths or Aeeldeafs Darlas; Tear. The annual report of the officers of ths Crecha for 19W, Including the report of ths treasurer, Mrs. A. D. Brandela, shows that the year was one of prosperity and activity. A total of too children were cared for at the Institution. A list Is given of the bene flclarles of the Creche. The report Is as follows: Our Creche has shown a singularly clean bill of health for the past year. The winter coal bills were excessive, but the bouse was warm. - The April meeting; was so small that we decided to Increase the membership of our board, which was done at the May meeting, making the number twenty-flve. As we were unable last fall to raise' the full amount needed to meet expenses and our funds were retting low. we considered plana for raining money. We first decided to Gve a ptimio reception at the creche on ay 13 to let our townspeople see and renew their acquaintance with our work. Ample preparations were made to receive any number of guests, but the windows of heaven were seemingly opened and but few tamo. Among them were Mr. .Chambers and his friend, J. K. Owens, both full of a plan to put the Creche In unlimited funds, we had determined long ago to use none but home talent for entertainments for the benefit of the Creche, and as Prof. Owens was already a citizen of Omaha we were persuaded to accept their proposition. The end did not Justify the means, the work de volving on many of our board was too great, the time 111 chosen Just at the close of schools for a children's opera and, many other conditions combined to disappoint us. The "thousands expected" dwindled to about 1600. Card Party gaeeess. The card party planned by Mrs. Lemlst aselnted by a few others of the board, was a delightful success, socially and financially. Bo smoothly did the affair move to the finish that one woman said to me: "How easily that $200 was made with no trouble at all." I reminded her that 200 tickets had to be sold, a doxen prises secured, the club house decorated and a hundred other things done before the Country club Creche card party of June S could materialize. The Country club put Its fine house and grounds at our disposal, thereby .aiding greatly In our success. In a review of our summer's work we re member with pride the entertainment given to the Creche children, their matron and nurses, by onr treasurer, Mrs. Arthur Bran dels, at her country house at Calhoun. Neither pains nor expense were spared to make the excursion delightful, and It will long remain as a red letter day In the memory of all the hapnv Dartlcttanta. We voted to raise. If possible, enough! money this fall to meet all expenses for a J'ear. so began earlier than usual to solicit unds. each member taking a list of names, but we have not succeeded In raising the 12.006 required. We have 11.604 and the bal ance must be forthcoming. Through the kindness of Mr. Tucker and others of our street car officers the entire Creche was taken to the park, where they enjoyed a picnic and returned safe and won derfully happy and tired to their snug beds at Ttlfcht. We are glad to be fellow citizens of these kind-hearted public-spirited men. Few can estimate the pleasure the little ones derived from the sand pile furnished them by Mrs. Charles Kountze last summer. Our thanks are due to the' newspapers of Omaha, which are Invariably courteous and generous to us, and to all -who aid us In this great work of saving the children we are truly grateful. Ho Deaths or Accidents. The number of children cared for at the Creche for the past year Is too. There were no accidents nor no deaths to record. We are glad to see that our good natron, Mrs. Weldt, la getting her look of health Blr iftnf ha, aavu,. Illnnaa Bh ! m faith- ful friend to these children and has bees for many years. We were glad to be able to Increase her salary a little this fall. Our monthly meetings are more Interest . lng when every member Is present. It Is not too much to ask of each of us that we spend two hours a month in devising means to carry on this charity. There Is much to consider, many beds for endowment, others ready to be replenished and sewing always. This Is not worthy to be called a report merely a review of a busy summer. We feel sure we have accomplished some lasting; good for mothers and babies In keeping up the Creche. .1 1,1st of Oncers. A trade mark Is usually some one par tlcularmark on goods to show their origin, but, as a matter of fact, any new, original quality, feature -or characteristic of an ar ticle of manufacture. If widely made known through advertising, becomes valuable as a trade mark, and Is protected by the courts, so that one article may have many "trade marks" that belong to It alone. Thus, for example. In the case of Cascar ets. Candy Cathartic, the name "Cascar eta," the expression "Candy Cathartic" the peculiar shape and color of -box. the octagonal tablet, and the letters "C. C. C." on each tablet, all' are expressive trade "marks" of that popular medicine, because they Indicate their genuineness, dltlngulsn them from Imitations and have become universally known to the people. After an hour spent In discussion the Board of County Commissioners Saturday morning laid over until next Wednesday action on the Bruning resolution to cut from 46 to SO cents a day, the rate for feed ing prisoners In the county Jail. In the meantime the board will meet In committee of the whole Monday morning to consider the resolution and also the appointments to be made to various offices at the disposal of the commissioners. . ' The discussion was Inaugurated by Com missioner Solomon, who presented . figures he had gathered from various sources as to the cost of meal a He had visited the Jail and secured figures on the quantities and kind of food served In the two meals per day. From these figures. he. gained the re suit that on the - number of prisoners at present In the Jail the sheriff Is making a profit of 100 per cent. That Is, the cost to the county per day at present Is 140.60, while the cost to the sheriff for materials, cook ing and serving is 130.25. Under the pro posed reduction the county would pay only $40.50 per. day and the sheriff would gather a profit of $10 per day, . "However high this rate may be consid ered In the light of the facta and the profit, to the sheriff, even at the SO-cent rate, said Commissioner Solomon, "I do not want to be unfair. I do want to allow the sheriff a reasonable profit, and am therefore will ing to vote for the SO-cent rate." . Bono Striking Comparisons. Incidentally Mr. Solomon called attention to the meals served by the Associated Char ities at 10 cents each. Including butter, milk and dessert: by the County hospital at the rate of 83 cents a day for three meala. In cluding . milk, butter, vegetables and des sert; and In public restaurants at 16 cents per meal. He had personally tested these meala and felt sure the sheriff could serve his prisoners just as cheaply and at a good, fair profit. , Commissioner Ure read the Bruning reso lutlon and maintained' It was defective, In the light of the statutes . governing the whole matter - of Jail administration. He called attention to a section making It the duty of the district Judges to make rules for the conduct of the Jail. . , - "If any such rules are In existence," he said, "I have not been able to find them. If they are made,- or-, when they are made, it may be we shall have to' provide for other costs of Jail administration - beside the meals. I feel the adoption of this resolu tion at this time would.be premature. I want this thing done In proper form." Commissioner Kennard also urged that the resolution lay over. In order that the board might get the right of the proposi tion from the start. He remarked that' all were In favor of the purpose of the resolu tion. " Commissioner Tralnor expressed himself j jor the resolution and said he Intended to vote for the reduction. He was willing, however, the two commissioners who were asking delay should have the time noces sary to satisfy themselves. , Peadlngr Lonrr Time Already. Chairman Bruning and Commissioner Solomon called attention to the fact that the resolution had been pending a long time and the date named for It to go Into effect Is Monday; also that they understood' a tacit agreement had been made to vote on It at his meeting. Mr. Solomon In sisted on a vote and offered a motion to that effect. .Commissioner Kennard moved aa a sub stitute that the resolution ' lay over and that the district judges be requested to formulate rulea . as provided for in the statute. On a vote the substitute was adopted by, the vote pf Kennard, 'ftainor and Ure. Mr. Tralnor explained that he voted Tor the substitute only on the ground of allowing more time for Investigation of the whole subject Commissioner Solomon at once gave no tice of a meeting of the committee of the whole at 9:30 Monday morning to take UP the resolution, also the appointment of officers. The matter of letting contracts for print ing -and supplies did not come up. County Treasurer Fink's bond for 1300,000 was approved. William A. Toder will be county superin tendent of schools until his successor Is elected and qualified. County Clerk Drexel s final report showed a surplus of 3138.07 turned into the county treasury, against a deficit In fees last ear of 128.
