NEW YORK. Jan 11 Th... ....
dence again today of a resumption of ac
tivity of organised oartlea or nwniin..
of the kind which conducted the aggreaslve
advance up to the first of the year and
wnicn has been suppowd to control the
market in the Interest of the recent profit
taking. That profit taking waa still In
evidence today, but Ita effect on prices
waa not so general aa that of yesterday.
The average level of the market rose
above that of yesterday and gaina In spe
cial stocks were pronounced. The volume
of aWallngs expanded materially.
There was little In the dav'a news to ex.
plain the movement. The joining In the
upward movement or some or the more
substantial Influential stocks was effective
upon sentiment. A rood effect waa pro
duced also by the developments in the
money maract. immediate condltiona di
verged from the gold export point. Sterling
exenange moved upward at Paris again,
thua relieving the pressure of New York
from that source. Foreign political senti
ment waa more cneenul and reiier waa felt
that the Bank of England refrained from
advancing lta official discount rate. The
weekly report of that Institution, however,
showed but a meager recuperation from
tho depleted reserve condition of last week.
auch Improvement as there was being prin
cipally due to the $37,000,000 loan contrac
tion. Thia brings the proportion of the re
serve to liabilities up to 33.60 per cent, com
pared with 29.87 per cent last week, but
against the ratio of 44.50 per cent this week
last year. The Bank of England also lost
about $1.500.ono today, which waa withdrawn
for shipment to Routh America. It Is be
lieved therefore that the bank la prepar
ing to get control of the money market
so aa to make an advance In Its rate ef
fective before resorting to that meaaure.
Foreign bankera here continue to execute
an outgo of gold later owing to the heavy
obligations to foreign lenders falling due
within the next few weeks. Sterling ex

CATTLE Cattle have been coming In
very freely this week.Hhal 1b, the receipts
have been much larger than last week, but
not much different from a year ago. Ail j
market points have had good runa, but
locally tne auppiy has not been any too
large as compared wltb the demand.
There was no great number of beef
steers In sight this morning, while all
packers seemed to be in need of supplies.
The trade opened early, and while It was
not particularly active, the cattle kept sell
ing until tbe yards were pretty well cleaned
up In fair season. As 10 the values there
was no very marked change, lnoal sellers
teady with yesler-
salcsmen who hap-
dld not appeal
to buyers thought they did not gel out
quite aa well aa yesterday.
Cows and belters seemed to be in very
fair demand and the market waa reason
ably active, that Is, sctlve enough to flee I
a ressonably early clearance. Aa was the
case with steers there did not appear to be
any very great change la values, but wbat
Utile change there was seemed to be on
ths side of stronger prices. Fat bull
were in very poor demand and all of 26c
lower than laat week; some would say
25ii4oc lower.
blockers and feeders of the better grade
were about steady, but aa usual after Ihe
middle of the week speculators discrim
inated more closely and common and In
ferior grades did not move off any too
freely. The feeder market as a whole lias
been in very fair shape this week.
