An unexpected larga tteerense In the world's visible supply of wheat was the chief factor contributing to a strong close today In the local wheat market. Final quotations on ' the May option were up to V4 Corn w.ia up lm ti'Sic. Outs were practically unchanged ajid provisions were 7V-'l"c lower. Liu Inn the first, half of the session tha wce.it market was weak on reports of a decline at Liverpool, due to free offerings of Argentina wheat. Opening quotations of the local iHiard were off Vc for May at s7c. Prominent commishion houses which were hiavy sellers yesterday sold again to il" v and pit (ruder joined In the move ment. TLis forced the price of May down to Jv before the noon hour, dcntlment then suddenly changed and for tho re mainder of the session a firm feel inn pre vailed. An exceptionally good demand was reported for cash wheat at all outside markets and many Inquiries were received lrom exporters. Itradxtrcct s weekly re port on the world's available supply of wheat showed a decrease of l.tdO.iiOO bush els, which was much larger than nenernlly anticipated. This ficvd many shorts to cover frily ami there was active buying ihiiii ior uie purpose or covering and by commission houses during tho last hour. offerings were readily absorbed and prices made a sharp rally. The May option rose to S7c and the market closed firm with May at X7(h!77c. Clearances of wheat and noin were equal to 700.00U bushels. Primary receipts were ii2o.iHi bushels agnlnst 47o.'0 bushels one year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth ann . iiicH go reported receipts or 12 earn aguliiHt K.V, cars last week and 273 car one year ago. The Mump In wheat caused 11 slightly easier tone In the corn market early In the day, but later a firmer feeling de veloped on fair demand from commission houses, the strength of wheat and reports of weather favorable for the movement of the crop. The market closed firm with prices at tin- highest point of the day. Mav opened a shade higher at 44V, "old off to 44V(44V and then advanced to 441c. which was ine closing quotation. Jan. -The movement of prices In today market was confused and Irregular from start to finish and little re mained of the gains at the end of the day. The pursuit of the movement to take prof Its was continued and many of the most prominent stocks In the recent movement were subjected to this process. Meantime new stocks were nushed forward into nroin- I Inence. An additional factor In the Iron I movement waa the resumption of buying of some shares which were subjected to the profit taking In the early part of the day. there was little new to accompany tho various movement and the explanations for them dealt more with terhlncal market conditions than with anything bearing on change In actual values. While the He rein ber movement of price carried the ma jority of share to record levels there was a group of Important securities which did not rise at any time within measurable dis tance of previous high records. These huve Wen the favorite In the new speculative advances of yesterday nnd today. Penn sylvania and It allied railroads are notable examples, the present price level reading far below the maximum touched In former speculative campaigns The recent move mont of Atchison Is given the same expla nation, although the stock was Inclined to rest today. In the I'nlted States Steel stock a tendency was manifest to alternate from one to the other, yesterday' rise tit the common giving place to steady realiz ing today, while tlie preferred waa pushed upwards, with strong sentimental effect on the whole market. The southern Iron stocks made ens:i-" tlonal advances and rumors were revived that the arrangement for the expected mer ger were being completed. The high priced northwestern granger and Paclflo moved upward widely and easily and old stories of coming extra disbursement and of new al legiances played a part In the movement. The rumor of absorption of the Missouri. Kansas Texa by the Burlington and ,if the Kansas City Southern by St. Paul were used with effect. St. Paul Itself wa among tno slocks which derived advantage from Its previous failure to share In the ad vancing tendency. There were other wide movements, but the character of the fac tors which moved them was similar to that In the rases named. Meantime there wns free realizing In t'nlon Pacific, Reading, the Copper and some other stock. While the market thus continued to show a degree of mixed strength It action conveyed an Impression of more effect In sustaining prices than that of yesterday. The falling off of the volume of activity added to this effect. The failure of a larger outside de mand to appear was a disappointment, to large holder of stocks. This was attrib uted to the almost universal belief that holiday holdings hang over the market, which were carried persistently through the December money stringency, but on which holders ore waiting to take profit on any opportunity. The money market showed some further relaxation, but the continued firmness of foreign exchange keeps alive the problem of how far the decline In Interesl rates can go without precipitating an outgo of gold. Continental discounts moved In fa vor of Ixtndnn today and the Imperial Bank of Germany made a very strong weekly return. The banks here transferred tfiO.Onn through the subtreasury to Cin cinnati and the rise In the money rate to per cent contributed to the late re action which wiped out most of the day' gains and made the closing easy. While there were some good loada In sight, there were plenty of the other kind. I.arge receipt of beef steers and un favorable advice rrom other selling points caused buyers to take to the lar aido of the deal and the market opened slow and dull. Oienlng bids were Invariably lower and it wa hard work to get int-ni raised. Where buyers Just happened to take a fancy to a certain lot of cattle they would offer steady prices, but on others they would bid fully loc lower. 'rhe mar ket" might be summed up as slow to loc The market on cow and heifers was In Just about the same shape as the steer market, the tendency being on the side of easier price. There waa a very fair demand, but there were so many cattle from which buyer could make selection that they were In no hurry to Mil orders. In consequence the movement was slow, and It was late befor seller were abla m dlsnosa of all their holding. Weak to 100 lower would cover the slate ct tlie 1 market as regards value. Among the receipts wa quite a sprinkling of stockers and feeders. The demand for desirable kinds of both stock cattle and feeders seemed to be quite brisk i.nd the holders of such had very little dunculty In realizing steady prices. The common and undesirable kinds were rather dull. Krpresentatlve sales: MEEK B'l'EEKS. St. I. on Is l.lve Mock Market. ST. LOriS, Mo., Jan. 9.
