Keatarrs of (he Trading; and Closing
Prices on Board ot Trade.
CHICAGO, Jan. 8 Despite several bullish
Influences, the wheal market hero today
was Inclined to be weak because of exten
alva selling. The feeling at the close, how
ver, was fairly steady and the May option
waa down only !c. Corn was up Vflo.
Oats were ofT o. Provisions were 12',o
to i'2o higher.
Sentiment In the wheat pit at the open
ing was rm.the May delivery being un
changed to He higher, at S7V(('c. During
tha llrst half hour pit trad rs purchased
moderately and their demand carried tha
price of Muy up to 87c. The world's ship

buhhtl less than last week, and the amount
of breadstuff on ocean passage decreased
Mi.iHm bushels, iteports fitim India do

to tho wheat crop In untriigalt-d districts.
FTom Argentina came reports of further
delay to harvesting because of rain. These
factors In conjunction with a steady market
at IJvcijMjol caused the early tlimnt'ss on
the board here. Uefore the end ot the
tlrst hour, however, the market commenced
to weaken. Several prominent commission
houses were free sellers, unci many local
bulls followed their leud. This started a
decline which carrbd the May option down
to S6'C. During the lasl half hour com
mission houses made active bids for wheat !
and this caused a recovery of a large part 1
of the earlier loss. Practically the only !
news of a bearish character during the
day waa an Increase In the visible supply
larger than had been estimated. The tlg
urra showing a total of 2,3k2,oiO In alghl.
The market closed steady with May at 1

equal to GUV) bushels. Primary receipts
were WS.OOO bushels, compared with 875.1W0
bushels a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth
and Chicago reported receipts of 740 curs
gainst bus cars a a ear ugo.
Trading In the corn pit was extremely
dull but the market had a firm tone. There
waa good buying by several prominent
commission bouses and some of ;he local
bulla made fair purchases. The vllblu
supply Increased MJ,a bushels, against tin
Increase of l,G.I0,0uit bushels one year ago.
News In general was rather favorable to
tho bears. The market closed (Inn with
prices at almost the highest silnt of tho
day. May opened ie higher, ut 44c, sold
up to 44c and closed at H'Vti'44c. Local
receipts were 345 c ms with itnrty-two cars
of contract grade.
The oats market was easy 011 moderate
selling by pit trailers, offerings were taken
mainly by cash houses. May opened un

The leading futures at Kansas City, as
reported by the Von Dorn Grain company,
ranged as follows:
NEW YORK. Jan. . There was a broad
and active market for stocks today as Is
obvious from the day's total transactions.
The movement of prices, however, was
rather unexpectedly narrow, the tendency
to advance belna repressed by the free
red, ' feeding of the new demand on the part of
previous holders or atocKs in oroer to
profits. Prioes were opened higher In most
cases, but In some prominent Instances
holders set about profit-taking promptly at
the opening.
The new demand was so broad and con
fident, as to afford opportunity for general
risuixlng during the first hour without
r autlng to any strong artificial support for
tho market and the realising was pursued
without restraint until a very general un
yielding of prices was perceptible. After
that there was some rather obvious sup
port on the part of the organised specula
tion by bidding up of prices In one quarter
' of the murket. while the profit-taking was
j pursued at others. There was a very manl
iest growin 01 puonc Illieieni III liir "'
ket at the opening which was naturally In
duced by the progressive strength shown
last week. There seemed a well defined
speculative sentiment widespread through
the country that the definite relaxation In
money, which had occurred by the end of
last week, had marked the passing of the
restraint on the expected outbreak of a
general speculation. Based on this con
clusion, there was a general Inrush of
buying orders this morning from miscellane
ous sources. The moderate 1 ffect which
this buying was allowed to produce on
prices was a demonstration of the extent
of the realizing which was going on. Lon
don advices reported that there was exten
sive selling of American securities In that
market before the opening here. This was
attributed to the closing out of some large
accounts which had been transferred from
New York to Iondon during the rerlod of
acute money stringency here. The stocks
thus sold In London came back upon this
market to a very large amount when the
stock exchange session opened. Money
was much more freely offered but the de
cline In rates did not make much progress
I below the level reached last week. It be
came evident that some of the large opera
i tnrs who had held stubbornly to thrlr stock4
1 thennuh the seveie mnncv stringency of
December Instead of taking advantage of
the relaxation In money to extend their
holdings were inclined to lighten their
loads. Tills action suggested that the com
ing of easier rates for money had been
awaited for Its stimulating effect on outsldo
demand for securities to afford a basis for
profit-taking rather than for extension of
speculative operations on the part of last
month's operators.
The week started with a contrubutlon to
the money market from the sub-treasury
operations of t2.4u8.000. The rates for time
loans relaxed together with the easier rates
for call money. New York exchange at
Chicago, however, showed a yielding tend
ency. On the side of the foreign exchange
market there was a decided Increase of
pressure on New York, an active demand
for remittances sending the rate for de
mand sterling up over Un In the pound
sterling over last week's closing rate. The

SHEEP-Recelnts this morning were the
largest that they have been a long time
nnd unfortunately half of the trains were
lute, so thnt It was rather uncertain all
the morning .lust what the receipts would
amiunt to. The market did not present
any especially new features. It was one
of those days when everything seemed to
move along In the usual manner ' without
any very Important changes being devel
oped. As to values the market waa steady
to easier In spots. A consldersble propor
tion of the receipts consisted of ewes, and
In some instances they sold at prices that
were possibly a little lower than last week.
On the other hand, buyers claimed that
they were full and that that would make
up for any apparent difference In prices.
However thar may have fcecn, II was a fact
that the geneiul market was In very fair
shape and prices as a rule entirely satls-

CATTLE Receipts al this point were very
light this morning for the 111st day 01 inn
week and 11 seemed as if shlpiTS were
still acting under holiday Influences. On
the other hand. Chicago had u large run
and the market opened up easier there.
Owing to tho very good local demand the
market here did not show much change.
The proportion of beef steers wu small,
while the demand was of liberal extant, so
that buyers were out In good season look
ing after supplies. In spite of the fuct the
unwise crowding of the Chicago market
caused a weak opening there, prices re
mained stationary here and the market
waa safely steady. Some sellers thought
they secured strong prices. Among the
offerings were quite a number of westerns.
The early arrivals were practically all sold
In good season.
There was quite a sprinkling of cows
and heifers anying the day s receipts, but
the sprlnkllniewas none too heavy to meet
the requirements of tho market, t'nder the
Influence of the good demand practically
eveivthlng changed hands In good season.
Tne "market could not be quoted otherwise
than steady with last week.
Not far from twenty cars of stockers and
feeders were on sale this morning and
thev moved ofT quite readily at steady
prices. Representative sales.
