For the last week the wholesalers hava
not been pushing hard for business. In
voices were taken by most Jobbers early
In the week, and since then they have been
busv with pricing. Owing to the holi
day's, salesmen did not get cut on the
road until the middle of the week. Order

numerous than Is usual for this time, and
tho lobhers feel that the business for the

Sugar was strong for the week, raws
having advance sharply. Wet weather

fore the crop Is marketed. As a result of
the advance In raws. New York retinera
have advanced nil grades of refined far
100 a hundred. This will no doubt be fol
lowed by an advance in the aouth anil

The first week of the year haa seen a
quiet market In salt nsh. Prices are well
maintained at prevailing high figures.
The official figures on the sardine pacK
have not been made public, but It Is cer
tain that it will exceed any of rerens
years. One reliable estimate made Is l,K-v,-OOo
cases, which Is about 200,000 cases larger
than last year.
Rice has been moving rapidly for the laat
thirty days. Jobbers look for a general Im
provement in prices In this line and expect
to pee both head rice and Japans consid
erably higher before the new crop is on the
market. Advices from the south report a
firm tone on the Atlantic coast and at New
Orleans.

Outside of tomatoes there Is little intereot
and little change of prices In the canned
goods line. A strong Interest has been
shown in tomatoes for thirty days, and the
Baltimore market haa steadily Increased
until Friday. They nre now held at 26o per
dozen higher than the basis of values De
cember 1. On account of this increase In
values California goods are coming forward
and can be landed at somewhat less than
the eastern packs. Gallons also are taking
on additional strength. The general posi
tion Is one of exceptional strength, and a
further rise In values Is freely predicted.
Coffee was strong for the week on th
large decrease in the visible supply for tho
month of December. It whs 44J..54 bags,
and It waa expected to lw only about 360000
bags. The total movement for December
was TWi.OtJO :K". Estimated receipts for
January are 67,r,(x bags, against 572,000 bag
last year for the samo month. There will
be a steady decrease In the supply now until
July, when the new crop comes on. Al
though the eastern trade papers quote 7s
at 8Sc, Omaha Jobbers have lieen unable to
get any offerings at less than hSiC Tho
Journal of Commerce contains some talk
that If tho Brazilian government puts an
export duty on coffee lUrsevelt will favor
an Import duty.
In peas the market offers little feature.
Stock of desirable grade Is in close com
pass and firmly held. Packers selling at
the prlnclpnl producing points report the
lightest stocks in first hands for a number
of years. Corn Is In fair shape under an
Increased consumptive demand, due to ex
ceptionally low prices ruling.
The entire line of dried fruits, with the
possible exception of raisins, Is In stronger
position than ever, prunes have been
niHikeil un Ue In the last thirty days.
I Higher prices are freely predicted and will
I doubtless come with the heavy demand for
fruit In the spring. Apricots and peaches
are. firm, without large movement. Raisins
are weak and there Is a strong disposition
to urge sales.
Dry Goods nnd Shoes.
No quotable changes ore to be noted In
the price of cottons. Travelers for the va
rious houses are now on the road and a
few orders are already coming in. In addi
tion to the advance business which has been
taken for spring, January undoubtedly will
be a very busy month. Sales have extended
to all departments. An advance 1b looked
for in prints almost any day. Some larg
orders have been taken for these goods
from retailers who are anticipating a
change of price. Collections have been
I good.

It was only a spasmodic demand, however,
and there will have to be a cold spell of a
week or more before the Jobbers enjoy a
good trade. Shoes continue to show a
higher tendency, though no actual advances
