NEW YORK, Jan. 6 The strength of the
stO( k market today showed less restraint
tlian at any time this week. The relaxation
In the money market was more pro
nounced than since the turn of the year.
There Vas a much calmer view of the lg
nlhcance of yesterday s remarks by Jacob
H. Schiff foretelling the greatest panic In
history unless soma change waa eftected In
the prevailing currency system. This re
vised view was due not so much to the
qualifying phrases found In the full report
of the speech against the intention to Imply
a danger or immediate disaster as to a
riper consideration of the conditions of
ti e address. It was realized that the sagac
ity of the experienced banker would pro
hibit the Issuance of a note of alarm at a
time of actual strain and danger which
would In Itself aggravate the danger. It
waa reasoned, therefore, that the choosing
of this time for giving his warning impliea
Mr. tSchltt'a conviction that the time of
actual danger from the condition of ten
sion in the money market waa now paet.
The stress laid upon the agitation for
railroad legislation aa an undesirable alter
native to the desired measures tor currency
reform also Indicated a strong special mo- ;
tlve for the matter of the banker s address.
As speculative sentiment received quite a
shock yesterday In the first perusal of tho
bulletins of this speech, there was a corre
spondlng revulsion In sentiment today. '
'lliere seemed to be a conslderatlve de
mand also to cover shorts on the part of
bear operators, who sold the market hastily
on yesterday's break. Something was made
or the fact or Mr. Schirr s contention mi
the Inconvenience in the recent money
market were not to be attributed to exces
sive speculation. The active and vigorous
support of fnlon Pacific was given special
significance as a reflection of the market's
attitude of the banking Intersts iroin wnicu , Arh,oq

Featarea of the Trading- mod Closing;
Prices oa Hoard of Trad.
CHICAGO, Jan. 5. Liquidation by a num
ber of prominent bulls caused a (harp break
today in the local wheat market. At the
close wheat for May delivery waa off He.
Corn was up c. Oals were unchanged
and provisions were unchanged to So
lilrher.
There were no signs of weakness in the
wheat pit at the opening, the market In
fact being quoted strong. Opening quota
tions on May were up lfiv4c to V4c, at
W7Af(flc to Mc. During the first few
minutes commission housese and local trad
ers were active bidders ami they carried
the price of May up to tOyo. The de
mand was caused chiefly by an advance of
Hd In the price of wheat at Liverpool and
wus due also to decreased receipts In the
northwest. The market, however, soon
encountered heavy selling orders from com
mission houses. These offerings were gen
erally considered to be made by some of
the leading bulls and general selling com
menced which resulted In a quick decline.
May dropping to WH"- At this point there
waa a slight rally, but It was of short
duration. Fresh offering came out and
the market became tlll weaker, Mny de
clining to tic. An Important factor In tha
latter part of the trailing wax a statement
from Xne official grain inspector of Argen
tina claiming that tho exportnble surplus of
wheat would be greater ihlH year thnn In
11X16 and that the quality of the grain w:n
better. The market cluaed easy with May
at 88'c. Clearances of wheat and flour
were equal to ;13.' bushels. Exports fur
the week, as shown bv Hradstreeta. were
equal to S.40,0i busl-eln. Primary receipt
were 511, 000 bufhcls, aninat 6o0,0U0' bunhels
a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chi
cago reported receipts of 3;t cars, against
Kin cars last week and 361 cars a year
aso.
Iesplte the breuk In wheat the corn
market waa firm fur alniuai the entire day.
I .a rite clearances at the seabo.trd, and
Bradstreet report showing exports of
,2TiO,noo bushels for the week were factors
that largely offset the weakness of wheat
leading commission houses were active
buyer and local traders followed their lead
by mnklng liberal purchased. The close
wss firm and final quotations were prac
tlcally at the highest point of the day
May opened a shade lower to a shade
higher Ht Hw44V. sold between 4c and
4.V and closed at 447"'45c. Ixjial receipts
were ai cars with seventeen of contract
graCe.
Selling bv elevator Interests caused some
weakness In oats enrly In the session. The
market later recovered all of the eurly loss
on buying by shorts, who were driven to
cover by the firmness of corn. May opened
a ahnde to c higher at SiVrr324- to XJV.
sold between 32Vc and 32c and closed at
32-c. Iral receipts were ninety-eight
car.
The provisions market whs firm' through
out the day on active buying by shorts and
local packers. The strength was caused by
a lOnjiDC advance In the price of live hogs
and by an excellent demand for cash lard.
There waa considerable profit-taking In
pork. and. because of this that product
showed less strength. At the close May
pork was unchanged at 113.95. Lard was up
2Sufr at 17. tilVn ;.(). Ribs were 5c higher
at V 55.

HOCSt The market opened MflOe higher

at the advance aa some of the packers at
least did not seem to feel Ilk paying it

held on strong and In the end forced

was that while slow to get started the

stocks rebounded violently from the nerce
raid made upon them yesterday, and so re
lieved tne market from one of Its principal
factors of depression. The forecasts of the
rash changes of the week showed a very
large movement of currency to New York
from the Interior. The margin of the re
celists on balance over the losses on ac
count of the absorption of tha sub-treasury
and the withdrawals of gold for ex
port, the latter Items amounting to 13,23.000
wai estimated at $2,000,000 and upwards.
The precedent of former years warrants
the assumption that this reflux of funds to
New York from interior points will con
tinue on a large scale for some weeks to
come. Money waa offered for loans on call
much more freely as a consequence of these
conditions and from the early high rate
of V Prr cent waa forced down after the
active demand of the day had been satisfied
to below 8 per cent. The easing of the
money rate was followed by an advance in
foreign exchange. Sterling exchange at
continental points moved against London
and the transfer of this pressure probably
had Its part also In carrying up the terlliig
exchange rate here. The firmness of Hrlt-i-t.

SHEEP For a Friday there was a fair
run here, some fifteen cars being reported
In the yards. Fortunately the quality was
better than yesterday and as a result the
market was more active and in a good,
healthy condition. It might be Bummed up
as a good, active and steady market. This
proves once more the oft-repeated assertion
that packers want desirable fat sheep and
lambs and will buy them readily nt very
satisfactory prices. The only trouble Is that
shippers get too anxious to realise and Im
agine their sheep are better than they really
are and snip them in before tney are ripe
for slaughter.
Among the sales this morning were west
ern yearlings at $6.2n, old wethers at $6 80
and ewes at $5.60. Everything sold In good
season and tho market was entirely satis

LONDON. Jan. 6. Rates for money were
easier In the market today owing to the
distribution of government dividends. Dls
counts were disposed to be lower on ac
count of the more abundant supplies of
money. There was a cheerful undertone
on the Stock exchange, although operators
generally were Idle, this being the eve of
the settlement. Nevertheless there wss a
fair amount of Investment business. Con
sols opened steady and hardened later on
the money prospects. Home rails had a
firm tendency. Americans opened wejik.
moved Irregularly to below parity, became
Inactive and rallied during the last hour
and closed at top prices. Foreigners were
quiet. Russian imperial 4s Improved at
first, but closed easier. Japanese were
steady. Internationals hesitated owing to
the Moroccan uncertainty and closed dull.
Copper shares were depressed, especially
Anacondas. Kaffirs were cheerful on the
understanding that the pending coolie con
tracts will be fulfilled. Japanese Imperial
6s of 19d4 were quoted at 102.
PARIS. Jan. S. Prices on the Bourse to
day opened heavy owing to more or less
voluntary liquidations and uneasiness
caused by tho nearness of the opening of
the Moroccan conference. The market
steadied later, but business wes confined
to fresh offers. Russians closed heavy.
Russian Imperial 4a were quoted at 84.25
and Russian bonds of 1904 at 488.
BERLIN, Jan. 6. Prices on the-Bours
today were weaker upon yesterday's New
York advices. Russians were easier.
