Provisions were un changed to 2Vfcc- higher. The wheat market waa firm from the start. Initial quotations of the May de livery were up V,c to W4c at sSHc to sN4Hc. Throughout the day shorts and commission houses were active buyers and early In the session the market re ceived good support from prominent bulls. The firm feeling at the opening was due principally to an advance of the price of wheat at Liverpool. Later came ad- vieea from an English crop statistician to the effect that wet weather In Argentina was delaying the harvesting of wheat. From the same source came also a report that shipments from ports on tho ounutie will probably soon be cut off because of the end of navigation, aa a result of Ice blockade. A report that American manu facturers of farm Implements have re ceived many letters from Russia cancelling orders Strengthened' the bullls!"- febling. Still another support fur the bulls was the fact that Bradstreets' weekly report of the world's visible supply of wheat did not come out. Many local traders sold short In expectation that the report would snow a large increase, ana wnen tne an nouncement was made that the report would not be Issued today the majority of the traders covered In haste. RATE FOR CALL LOANS FIFTY PER CENT Large ghlamenta of Gold to 'goath America and Heavy Withdrawals from Banks by Vahtreasary Affect Condition. NEW YORK. Jan. 3. The movement of the speculation today contested the Influ ence of the continued strtnaenrv of the money market with more persistence than 1 was the case yesterday, but gave way to weakness at the last as on yesterday. The stringency, In fact, was leas acute, the money rate showing the operation of forces working towards relaxation. But the evi dences of discouragement over the slowness of the working out of the relief to the money market continued manifest and there was considerable irregularity In the stock market. Tha operations which advanced prices gave signs of a reversion of activity Into the hands of pools and centralised forces. Individual operations wero on a very largo scale. This wo true aa well or tno prom taklng sales. Some encouragement to spec ulative sentiment waa caused by the as sertion which was diligently circulated, that some of the large speculative commis sions were realizing on a large scale and paying off loans on call with which they had been carrying stocks. It was alleged as a supplement to this process that the stocks sold were being taken over In large blocks by capitalists of a more substantial character. The effect of these conditions on the money market. If they were ac tually occurring, was alight. Money went as high as 40 per cent early In the day, and while It was maintained at that rate for a short time, K showed little readiness to yield below the 26 per cent rate, and flur ried to 60 per cent again before the close. The postponement of the operation of normal forces toward the regular money stringency caused a revival of rumors and reports of expected special measures of re lief. The most Important of these was the report of authority to the disbursing ofll cer of the Panama Canal commission to withdraw tti.flun.oijo from the New York sub treasury for deposit in local banks mid trust companies. Other special develop ment were against the money market. Tho enormous proportions of the requirements of the January settlements were Indicated ty the volume or bank exchanges at the ' clearing house todav, which rose to $i'S(, 844.1. thus eclipsing by over twUOU.ono the heaviest clearings of any previous day In the history of the clearina house, whl.-li were made on May 10, 1901, the day follow ing the panic caused by the corner In Northern Puclfic. Subscriptions fell duo yesterday for a 25 per oeni Installment on the 33u.ono.Ooo New York. New Haven A Hartford debenture bond Issue, with privi lege 10 subscribers to pay the subscription in full and save Interest. The withdrawal from the subtreasury of 31,5K',O0O in gold was enshrouded In some mystery and was supposed to be either for a Mexican, or South American destination. More significance was attached to engage ments of gold for shipments to South America which were taken as establishing the control by the London market of sup plies of gold In this market as the ship ments are In liquidation of London obliga tions to South America. There was a re covery in the rates of discount In London and Berlin today which Indicated the pass ing of the effect of the New Year's dis bursements In those markets. Reports of political tension between Germnnv and France growing out of the coming confer ence on Morocco were believed to have some Influence on the foreign situation. The subtreasury continued tn withdraw funds from the market 4n spite of the beginning of payment of the February government In terestthe loss by the bank to that Insti tution since the last bank statement rising iuuy 10 .om.wu. special reasons were advanced for the strength In some Indi vidual stocks, hut the movements were generally attributed to the supporting measures of powerful speculators largely committed to the market. Reading and American Locomotive made high record prices, and St. Paul, Atchison, I'nlon Pa cific, Louisville Nashville and Sugar showed varying degrees of strength. Onlv one or two of these saved any remnant of their gain In the selling movement which overwhelmed the market In the final hour and made the closing weak and active. Bonds were irregular. The feeling was a llille weak and In spots possibly the market was a very little lower, but as a general rule sellers were quoting tneir aale us just about steady with yesterday. Al t lie opening of the market there was talk of cows and heifers selling lower, but as the trade got under way there waa a bel ter demand than Had been anticipated and the most of tne cow chunged hands in good season. The prices paid did not show any material change as compared with yesterday, most of tne sales looaing steady. There may possibly have been some little weakness along the edges. It aaa not the receipts, though, but the reports from other selling point thst had the greatest Influence upon the market. With other market points all reporting declines, buyers were slow to begin opera tions here, and when they did their bids were considerably lower. At first the trade was verv slow, but buyers and sellers finally got together on Hie basis of be lower rrlces, at which the hogs sold. Oood loads of hogs weighing, say, 235 to t&O pounds, sold largely at 35.(6, with henvler weights at 35.10 and on up a high a 36.15. Uooi. heavy mixed old around 35.06416 07 and less desirable loads from 3506 down. Tho market closed more active and stronger. Representative sales: AT. Kb. Pf. No. AT. I'n fortunately a good many, or more correctly peaking, more than half of the receipt, did not put In un appearance until after the middle of the forenoon. This of Itself was sutliclent to make a slow and late mar ket. In addition the quality ot a large per centage of the offerings waa none too good. Conditions were all against the selling In terests. Chicago early reported a decline of 10c and all other market point were sending out discouraging reports. At the same time local huvers felt that they nut up price most too fast here yesterday and that this market was too high a com pared with others. The result of all these adverse circumstances was a slow and dull market, generally 10c lower than yesterday Hnd In extreme cases possibly 15c lower. This just about wipes out the gain this week and leave the market where It wa at the close of lust week.
