CHICAGO GRAIN AMI PROVISIONS
Keatasres of the Tradlag and Closing;
Prtees on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, Jan. 2. Decreased shipments
of wheat from Russia formed the chief
cause for a llrm wheat market here today.
At the close wheat for May delivery wus
"P f"4". corn was practically unchanged
Oats showed a gain of Vc. Provisions were
unchanged to 2c higher.
The market wus Mini for the greater part
or mo day, tnere being at nrsi a siignti
easier feeling, which continued only throtigr
the first half hour of trading. This do
cllne wa Induced by liberal receipts In tho
nortnwest and local traders sold freely.
The opening, civ. May .was. a. shad lower
to a shade higher at K7'te to ttSc, and before
tne end of the first half hour the prices
I ad eased off to 87kfoH77.kc. Higher prices
ut Liverpool, aald to be caused by smaller
shipments from Russia and porta on the
Danube, together with buying by leading
bulls, brought about a reaction and prices
made a fair rally. Many of the early sel
lers becamo buyers and this aided In the
creation of a firmer feeling. The total
volume of trading, however, was not large
the dullness of the holidays being still In
evidence. For May the highest point of
the day was reached at k8Vfrjgt4c. The
close was llrm, with May at xc. Clear
ances of wheat and flour were equal to
474. CM) bu. The amount on passage de
creased 2,484,000 bu. Primary receipts were
1.648,000 bu., compared with 891.1X1 bu. one
year ago, Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago
reported receipts of 866 cars, against 1,013
last week and 062 cars one year ago.
Despite lower cables and liberal loca!
receipts the corn market was steady for
the entire day. There was some acmana
by Influential houses, hut offerings were
scarce and trading was small. large clear
ances and predictions of wet weather for
the oornbelt were the particular bullish in
fluences. The close was steady. May
evened unchanged to a shadx lower at
mWO to 4yu44Sc. sold up to 444c and closed
444,c. Local receipts were sno cars, witn
cars or contract grade.
A lively demand by commission men
caused a firm feeling in tlx nuts market.
Offerings, which were light, came chlelly
fram cash houses. May opened a shade
lilirher at 32Uc. sold u u to XiUo and closet)
at X.'S'hWc. Local receipts were cars.
- Provisions were steadv and unlet. The
trading of a prominent commission houe,
which bought January lard and ribs and
sold the May option on them both, was
the feature of trading. A 6c advance In
tiu price of live Iiokb lent strength to the
market. At the c1om May pora was up
:-c at II3.77H. I.ard and rilm were each
unchauaed at 7.4; and IT 37Vi respectively.

NF7W YORK. Jan. 2. -The action of the
stock market today Indicated rather more
conservatism In the speculation than was
the case last week, even while money
rates were ruling at a loo per .cent level.
The speculation made progress today and
there was a broad and active market with
plenty of evidence of strength. The
strength, however, was In spots and the
market showed a large degree of Irregu
larity, due to press of profit-taking on
some of the principal market leaders of
laet week. The action of the market also
showed the strain of maintaining the
speculative position in the face of hopo
deferred by the easing of money.
The money situation today was apprecia
bly less acute than last week, but never
theless the market was undeniably
stringent. The rate opened at 50 per cent
and there was small disposition to yield
below 36 per cent while the active oper
ations were still In progress and belated
borrowers made a late rate of 60 per
cent. This was a distinct disappointment
to the hopes of some of the boldest of
last week's speculators. Many who took
a slighting view of the Importance of a
100 per cent rate for one day or two days
regarded with less equanimity the possi
bility of a rate considerably less, although
still high, should It be maintained for a
period of days or even weeks. The money
market was less affected today than was
hoped by the large disbursements of divi
dend snd Interest money for which pro
vision has been making by the accumula
tion of cash and by the release of sums
gathered Into trust companies to strengthen
their showing for the annual stntement.
Such relief as Is to be looked for from
these sources came promptly, and further
relaxation which Is hoped for from other
sources will come Into effect more slowly.
The deposit at the subtreasury on Satur
day of 32,000,000 for transfer to San Fran
cisco proved a disagreeable surprise and
helped to establish the credit balance of
the government Institution at the clear
ing house this morning, which amounted
to 3231,400. Without counting this, the
banks have already lost to the sub
treasury since the bank statement f1.700.ooo,
the customs collections of the government
running to very large amounts from day
to day. The government Interest payable
January 14 was paid In anticipation on
the middle of the month. The decision
of the Treasury department to pay at
once the government Interest due Feb
ruary 14 provided only a small offsetting
Influence, the total amount of this Interest
being only f 1,700.000.
The money situation In foreign markets,
however, eased decisively. Discounts de
clined at London, Paris and Berlin. Ster
ling exchange rose at Parla and Herlln,
and there was a sharp marking down In
the price of gold In the London market.
The Russian situation was considered Im
proved and continental money markets
were relieved accordingly. The course of
money In foreign markets Is of Import
ance to the New York situation, owing
to the heavy sums borrowed from foreign
lenders for the conduct of the speculation
here and which fall due within the next
few weeks. The facility with which these
obligations can be renewed may have a
bearing on the future of the speculation
here. Now York exchange at Chicago,
which has been ruling at a discount, rose
to a small premium today. Some stress
was laid on the fart that wagers on tlui
mayoralty election In New York, which
were held tip on account of the contest,
were paid off today.
Some special effect was produced on sen
timent by the manifest pressure upon the
United States Steel stocks, XTnlon Pacific
and Amalgamated Copper, which were In
fluential leaders of last week's advance.
The recovery In the money rate on the
demand from belated borrowers late In
the day added to the disappointment over
the small outside participations the mar
ket induced general throwing over of
etocka in the final hour, which carried
the average level below Saturday and
wiped out many of the earlier gains. The
closing tone was Irregular.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par

SHEEP It seerued like old times In ths
sheep barn this morning, there being
twenty-five cars reported. In the most of
them early arrivals. This Is the largest
number of cars received at this point since
November 21. when sixty-six cars consti
tuted the day's run
made up entirely of killers, there being
no feeders In sight, at least nons to amount
to anything. Fortunately the moat of the
receipts were of good quality.
The statement made many times In these
columns that there was a good demand
here for desirable fat sheep and lambx was
fully verified this morning when the re
ceipts, though large, changed hands very
readily, because they were the kind that
packers want. More than that, they sold
at an advance, the market being rtrong
to loc higher than yesterday, or lOrJlfxs
higher than last week at the very least.
A few western lambs sold as high as $7.40,
with yearlings as high as Pi. 30, old wethers
at tO.OO and some native ewes at to 60 and
Colorado ewes at ti.56. These prices were
all paid for strictly good stuff.
It may not he out of place to repeat the
old caution about not shipping In anything
as packers will not buy half
fat sheep or lambs so long as they cad
secure those that are better. If the coun
try gets too anxious to realize and begins
sending In Immature stock they can de
pend upon breaking the market.

There was quite a sprinkling of cows and
