CHICAOO. Pec. 28. Continued liberal
movement of wheat In the United mates
and weakness of the ljveipuol market
were the Important Influences tendinis to
depress prices of wheat here today. At
the close the May option was off 'e. Corn

V'l-V'. whllo covering by shorts cuused a
net gain of 2c In the prlca of old Ie
cember. Oats were unchanged a-nd pro
vlaloiis were 2Vitl'"'; lower.
Sentiment in the wheat pit was bearish
for the entire day. Many of 4he big hold
ers were discouraged by the day's statis
tics und sold heavily during the earlier
part of the day. This selling was later
augmented by free offerings from commis
sion houses and local trailers. A number
of bulls gave, active support to the mar
ket late In the dav and materially checked
the decline. At the opening the market
whs depressed by reports ol a declino at
Liverpool and by the large Increase in
stocks at Minneapolis. letter there came
messages from the southwest reporting the
crop outlook as excellent. A trade paper
In Cincinnati declared that conditions aur
rounding winter sown wheat have rarely.
If ever, been equalled at this season of the
year. Prlniarv receipts continued large,
arrivals today being Mo.OflO bushels, against
:i1,(iiO bushels for the corresponding day
one a ear ago. The May option opened
iSc to SftcV lower, at KfrtiSV and
sold off to Wiic. A more lively demand
ensued late In the dav. active bidding being
made by shorts. Xnis with the demand
from the bull side caused a rally in May
to 87VC. Clearances of wheat and flour
were equal to 2,UtiO bushels. Minneapolis.
Duluth und Chicago reported receipts of
. IS cars against t4 curs last week and
161 cars one year ago.
A bulge of 2'ic per bushel In the price
of old st vie December corn followed mod
erate covering by shorts In that delivery.
The volume of trading, however, was not
large. Considerable anxiety was caused
hiiiiiiii! those who had nut out short lines
bv reports of wet weather throughout a
large section of the corn licit. Weakness
of wheal bad some effect on the May op
tion, that delivery easing off a trifle late
In the day. Old style December opened at
47Vc. sold between 47c and 50c, and closed
with a net gain of V. 94c May
opened unchanged to a shade higher, at
44V to 44i sold betwe-ti 4ltMt,e and
44V and closed at 441Wtlc- lcal re
ceipts were 2o7 cars, with 64 cars of con
tract grade.
The feature of trading in oats was an
advance of nearly 1c a bushel in he price
of the December delivery. The upturn was
due chletlv lo covering by local shorts.
From S"c the price ot December was bid
up to ItlUo. At that point liberal offer
ings were" made by elevator Intervals and
the price reacted to Sic. The close was
sit-adv at 31Vc. The May option was
easier earl v in th session in sympathy with
the weakness of wheat, but became firm
later in the day. May opened unchanged
to a shade lower, at Slc to 32c, sold be
tween Slc and 32SC and closed at dlTat'tic.
Uical receipts were Ii9 cats.
Provisions were easier because of a de

CALL RATE ADVANCES TO 125 PER CENT

to Rise.
NEW TORK. Dec. 2 . The organlisil
speculation in control of the stock market
showed the courage of its convictions today
by buying stocks and put up prices In
face of rates for call money at 100 per
cent and above. ljrge amounts were
loaned on the Stock exchange at 110 per
cent and funds were placed outside the
exchange at 12A per cent. So long as money
could be had at these terms the rates were
determined not to be prohibitive of the
holding of stocks on margin, and they were
paid rather than sell out stock holdings.
They were paid also on the assumption
tt-l the high rate may hold or even be
exceeded on the remaining days of the
week.
The argument was heard amongst specu
lative operators that this yearly rate of
Interest was well worth paying for the
day or two under the end of the year on
the prospect that prices were likely to
advance In larger proportion than the dally
amount of Interest represented at this
rate. It was asserted with eager enthusi
asm also that these few remaining days
of the stringent money would offer the
only opportunity for securing stocks at
the present level of prices. Such was the
spirit that dominated an extraordinary
slock market which Ignored money condi
tions that have been the signal for a
panicky unloading of securities In the past
experience of the Stock exchange. There
was something of a scramble to unload
stocks during the early transactions In the
market owing to an apprehension that It
would be found impossible to borrow
money on any terms. lrobably the liquida
tion thus effected caused some relief In the
money tension. Tho extraordinary Interest
rates also had their effect In bringing offer
ings into the market from many unex
pected sources, some of them inslgnlrl

ant In themselves. Including small private
deposit accounts, but making up a con
siderable aggregate. Some banking funds
were made available from outside sources.
The strictly local character of the strin
gency Is a remarkable feature of the epi
sode. Money on call at nearby cities con
tinues to rule at not over 6 per cent. While
good demand exists for money tnrougn- 1
out the country, this contrast with rates :
pld on the New Y'ork exchange offers an
attraction to transmit funds to this center.
Rumors continued verv nerslstent of con
templated measures of relief for the money
market by the secretary of the treasury,
but the arrival of that official at Chicago
confirmed the assertion that such meas
ures of relief would be made dependent
upon the finding of evidence of the need
outside of the speculative centers. It was
broadly Intimated, however, that the Treas
ury department would adopt a tolerant
attitude towards the reserve requirement
of the banks during the existence of any
crlsfs lr. the money market and It was
the general supposition that the banks were
availing themselves or this Implied per
mission to encroach liberally upon their
reserves. There was an urgent demand
for time loans for the shorter periods as
well as for call loans and the commissions
demanded to secure slxtv and ninety-day
funds made the Interest rate equivalent
to 9 per cent. This condition In the time
oan market opens a serious question as
to the justification for the overwhelming
confidence In the speculative circles of an
Immediate relaxation in the money strin
gency after the first of the year.
The weekly statement or the Bank or
England disclosed an almost unprecedented ,
weak condition of that Institution for the '
period of the vear, the proportion of re- I
serve to liabilities having fallen to 33.81
Fer cent. There were neavy withdrawals
rom the bank today for shipment to South
America and the still further decline In
the sterling exchange rate at Paris showed
the continued pressure on London from
that point also. The weekly return of the
Bank of France was a poor one. There
were constant rumors here of the forma
tion of a bankers' pool to provide a fund
for the money market such as was done
In the crisis of 1902. It was alleged also
that the banks had concerted an agree- 1
merit to keep the rate or staiiuinR- loans at
fixed figure until next week. These ru
mors were of effect on sentiment, but could
not be confirmed. The late relapse In the
money rate to 60 per cent was of no sig
nificance, most demands having been satis-
fled before that rate was touched, but the
speculative confidence was maintained and
the market closed active and strong.
Anaconda Mining was a sensational fea

SHEEP There was a moderate
sheep and lambs on the market
eighteen cars, nhout 6.0ti head, being re
ported In. Of this number eleven cars were
billed through, while four cars of feeder
lambs were sold to arrls-e. The receipts
today were somewhat larger h;-, for the
same day last week, when 4.4io head ar-rl-ed
while the run for the corresponding
day last year was just about n third as
large. The receipts for the first four das
of last week were Just about twice as
large as for the same lime this week, the
sise of the run being cut down some by the
fact that Monday was a holiday. Compared
with the run for the first four days of the
same week one year ago they are consider
ably more than twice as large.
There were only threo cars of fal sheep
offered for sale this morning: these sold
readily at prices that were fully steady
witn esteruay. The demnnd for desirable
killing sheep and lambs was In practically
the same condition as for the previous three
or four days. Packers were not wanting
much of a supply of any kind of sheep.
Colder weather Is expected every day now
and with the coining of a good cold spell
It Is probable that the demand for this
kind of stock would increa.se.
There were only four cars of feeder lambs

were aold to arrive for the practically

CATTLE There was another light run of
cattle on the market this morning, 114 cars,
about 2,800 head, being reported In. This is
about l.Otrt head larger than the run for the
same day last week and is also larger than
for the corresponding day one year ago by
about 1.200 head. The receipts for the week
so far total only 7,500 head, as against 16,717
head for the first four days of last week.
Monday being a holiday, however, cut the
run down considerably. As compared with
the run for the first four days of the same
week last year it Is larger by about 1,5'0

There was only a moderate supply of beef

common Trading was reasonably active
and anything that was at all desirable
found leady sale at prices that were fully

loads that sold at what looked to be strong,
while on the other hand where the quality
was quite common they sold a little easier.
So 10 sum the whole thing up In a few
words trading was fairly brisk with prices
practically steady.
The supply of cows and heifers was also
rather limited and the quality generally
was of the inferior kind. Trading was
