Primary receipts In this country were today nlmost double, those of last year, being l,(i!i6.0iO bushels against 637. iaO bushels for the correspond ing day one year ago. Despite the heavy preponderance of bear news, bull leaders supported the market throughout tha ses sion by liberal purchases cjf May. For this option the lowest point of the day was reached at MiVqMvc. A portion of the loss was recoveied late In tne day on buying by shorts. The close, however, was easy, final quotations on May being at 87,,'ua714C. Clearance l wheat and flour were njual to H.Sil bushels. Minneapo lis. Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of 1,1-7 cars against iu2 cars last week and 4tJl curs one year ago. Despite liberal local receipts the corn mark'.'t was firm throughout the session. Trading nu not heavy and Interest cen tered in the Dceemlier option. Reports of light acceptances from the country and an estimte of small receipts for tomorrow were the chief sources of the firm mar ket. Iiiddlng for old style Decemlv-r by shorts was lively, but oflerlngs were light. That delivery opened at 4V, advanced b 4o and closed at 47ic. May opened un changed at 44Hc sold up to 44V". where It closed at the highest point of the day. Local receipts were tiM cars with 1J2 cars of contract grade. Trading in oats was almost nothing, tho filt being deserted at times. There was ittle buying by ctish houses and lones, while seillng was mainly by small trad ers. Firmness of corn steadied the oats market. Mav opened ft shade lower at 3H,c, sold between 3P,i31c and HlVtf 3:'c and closed at 31?tt3Jc. Local receipts were i'SO cars. Provisions were weaker because of an easier market for live hogs. The feature of the trading was sales of lard and ribs by packers. There was considerable prollt taking by local holders. At the close May pork was off lu-u'U'ie ut $!.i.7t I1.7JH. lid was down 7V at 17.40. Ribs were 'H'lJfio lower ot fi.lWdT.Z&. The receipts and grain were: Flour.' bbls Wheat, bu Corn, bu Oats, bu Rye, bu Barley, bu It must be conceded that the speculative position was maintained with remaraanie equanimity. No such rates have been paid for monev on call as those exacted today at the Stock exchange since the panic period of the spring of Itstl and the pre vailing rates of from 30 to 95 per cent were such as have proved an Index of panic conditions In the stock market In times past. Yet the pressure upon stocks proved so light that It might be sMd to repre sent little more than a cessation ,of the recent determined buying movement and a modetate retirement on the part of traders from positions on the long side. Thft recent obstinate determination to Ignore absolutely the stringency of the money market showed some signs of vital ity this morning as was manifested In the determined bidding up of a handful of stocks in spite of the admonishing effect of the money rnte on the general list. American Smelting, for Instance, was rushed up to a new record price, and there were various advances In a few of the minor specialties. The same spirit was manifest In the market during the day when there was any sign of relaxation in the excessive stringency In the money mar ket, prices being taken In hand and bid up here and there with the apparent de termination to restore the Impairment In values. But these efforts lacked success and the market was Inclined to fall Into extreme dullness In the Intervals when sell ing pressure was relaxed. The deter mined optimism of the s;eculatlve opinion whs shown by the character of some of the arguments heard. The very stringency of the mooev market, said these rensoners. wns evidence of engerness of very wealthy capitalists to withhold funds from th" money market for use In the purchase of stocks. The presence In Wall street of the secretary of the treasury also came In for the usual cheerful Interpretation on the part of the confident operators for the advance, although such Intimations of the secretary's purpose toward the money mar ket as were allowed to become public offered no encouragement for hopes of re lief for any purely speculative distresses. Reports of the progress of settlement of the twinkriipt Chicago banks were less sat isfactory and the continued discount on New York exchange at Chicago showed the maintenance of pressure there for funds on New York. Some of the Interior cen ters as well reported a discount on New York exchange. The amount taken from the banks bv the subtreasury since the last bank statement was expanded to $2,383,000. The severity of the money strin gency had more effect In driving down the rales for foreign exchange, but dis count rates hardened In London ana a further decline In sterling exchange ut Paris marked the continued money pres- atite at that center. Conditions were easier at Berlin and the imperial bunk made a moderately strong showing In Its weekly retui p. The announcement of the terms of Issue of the new securities In tho Metropolitan Traction merger resulted In some feverish movements In that group In the effort at an adjustment of the relative values In dicated. The trust company ana nana troubles at Memphis, although they created bad impression, were regarded as 01 minor importance and due to special causes. Hut some funds were transferred from here to Memphis. Attention wns attracted by the estimate or the journal 01 com merce that the dividend and Interest dis bursement to be made In January will reach the record figures of f141.000.OO. an Increase over last January's disbursements of $4,6u0,O. The magnitude of the sum thus to be provided for In the fact of the low condition of bank reserves and the active borrowing for speculation offers a sufficient explanation for the course of the money market wttnout seeking- obscure ex plantions in supposed manipulation to In flate the money rate. The Inroad upon prices of stocks was Inconsiderable tip to the earlv afternoon and an effective rally at that time reduced the losses made early In the day. Hut the market broke badly during the last hour with the wilder flights in the money rate and the closing was weak and very active. Bonds were easy. Total sales, bar value. t3.OMj.0(. It Is hardly txpccicn that mere will be much of a ruti during the rest of tills week. Trains were lute iigain today so that the fore noon was well advanced before u great deal of the stock came up and it was struggling lu all during the morning. The majority of the arrivals consisted of fat sneep and lambs, with only a couple of loads of feeding sheep. The I demand for lat stock wus rather poor and il wus hard to tell whether : lie trad ing was active or not as the stuff came straggling In a load or two at a time all during the morning. Nearly ull dfslrable killing sheep and lambs sold readily soon after they were placed In shape to be shown. However, generally ctpcaKlng. there was not much of a demand fcr this kind of stuff as the packers appear to have a supply sufficient for their needs and are not wanting much more so long as this spell of warm weather lasts and poultry and game are as easy to get as they are. The most of the sheep and lambs sold this morning went at prices that were practically steady. A load of wethers sold early for 86 75, which was fully steady with yesterday. A siring of light lambs sold for 37.16. There was only a sprinkling of feeder sheep and lambs on the market end these sold during the day at practically steady prices. Although the receipts were small last week they were considerable larger last Wednesday than today. On the other hand, however, the run for the same day last year was less thnn half the size of today's run. It Is not expected that there will be any lingo receipts during the rest of the week. Trains were late lu arriving, so that it was rather lute before a rart of the cattle got up to the yards and in shape to be shown. There was only a moderate supply of beef steers on the market and trading, In spite of the small supply, was very slow and uninteresting. Packers were not buying much beef cattle of any kind. The quality of the offerings was rather common and this kind of stock has been hard to get rid of for some time. Trices on the better class of beef steers were practically uuot ably unchanged.
