NEW YORK. tc. K Further very large
and variegated anaoi-ption of storks marked
today's proceedings In the stock market.
The heavy demand for stocks at an advan
cing tendency of prices waa a convincing
demonstration of the confidence In values
ami the strong hopes for further advances.
Thre was some amirehenslon that llto
Christmas market would prove to have been
overdone on sentimental ronstueraiioiis.
There was a good deal of admonition to be
heard also in various quarters or wan
street this morning, exhorting to caution
and conservatism for the last week of the
year owing to the heavy requirements upon
the money market and the danger of em
barrassment to those over-committed in
tpeculatlve ventures. The 35 per acnt mom-y
rate before the close gave point to tho
warning. But the course of the early mar
ket soon dissipated the apprehension that
the Christmaa adrance waa over and made
small account of the warnings of the con
servatives. The money market seer-.s to have no ter
rors to the speculative tplrlt any longer,
the stock market having successfully with
stood such flurrlea In money so many times
this fall that the safety of the position Is
elt to be assured. The small period remain
ing before the end of the year added to the
Indifference with which the possibility of
another flurry was contemplated. Such a
flurrv admittedly was not only possible, but
not Improbable. The January disbursements
will be larger than usual this year and the
necessity for providing for them will be
correspondingly large. But while the pre
liminary pressure will be aggravated, the
subsequent realisation is expected to be
correspondingly large. But while the prellm-

Prices on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, Dec 2. Covering by shorts
caused an upturn today In the price of
wheat here. At the close wheat for May
delivery waa up 'iOSc Corn and oats
were practically unchanged. A decided
flurry took place In tne price of December
corn, which 'flecHned almost 3e 'and later
regained nearly all of the loss. It did not
affect the market, however, aa trading In
December Is very light. Provisions were a
shade to 7'4c lower.
I'ntll late in the session the wheat mar
ket was Inclined to be weak. Pit traders
largely favored the selling aide but de
mand by leading longs had a tendency to
restrict offerings. At the opening the mar
ket waa depressed by the unexpected size
of the world's shipments. An English
statistician on Saturday estimated the
total movement at Mmu.imo bu., but actual
figures supplied by the same authority to
day showed . the movement to be over
11,000,000 bu. Another weakening influence
was an Increase of 800.009 bu. In storks of
wheat at Minneapolis. Selling was also
encouraged by reports of rain in India.
In the last hour buying was commenced
by aeveral prominent commission houses.
and shorts, becoming somewhat alarmed,
covered actively. The demand found the
market apparently oversold and the result
waa a quick rally In prices. The market
closed firm and almost at the highest
point of the day. May opened a shade lower
at kRViC, (old oft to 864c and advanced to
Sle. Final quotations were at S7Sc Clear
ances of wheat and (lour were equal to
414,1100 bu. The amount on passage de

Increased l.32.000 bu. Primary receipts
were 1.61S.000 bu, compared with 1.622.oi
bu. one year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and
Chicago reported receipts of 1,031 cars,
against 860 cars last week and 1,061 cara
one year ago.
A slump of nearly 3u a bushel In the
price of December delivery, old style, and
a recovery of the greater part of the loss
was the feature of trading In corn. Profit
taking causod by reports of heavy local
receipts atarted the decline. The arrivals
todav were 1.04s cars, of which 2H0 were
contract grade. In addition to this. It
cars of contract corn were transferred
from public to private elevators and will
' be available before delivery on December
contracts. Despite the wide fluctuations
In price trading In the Iwoember option
was Insignificant, the day's business being
estimated at not over So.OOO bu. The
strength of wheat late in the day was an
Important factor In tlm uoturn In corn.
The December delivery, old style, opened
at 47V. broke to 44V' and closed at 47c.
The May option held steady for the entire
day. It opened a shade lower to a shade
higher at 44c to 44V. sold between 43"aO
and 44Vc elused at 44c.
Enrlv In the day the oats market was
somewhat easier, in sympathy with other
grain. Dater the demand Improved and
the market became steady. May opened
unchanged at 31V1131V. sold off to 31V
31V and closed at 31Ji21V.- Ixcal re
ceipts were 412 rars.
Provisions were weaker after a tlrni oien
Ing. The market waa at first Influenced
by an advance of toe to ISc In the price
of live hogs. l,oc;il packers and foreign
ers sold freely during the lust h.tlf of the
day, and aa a result the market closed
easv. Final quotations on May pork were

SHEEP Receipts were rather light this
morning, only three cars, about 169 head,
being reported.- There Is almost always a
light run after a holiday and today did
not prove to be an exception to the rule.
Tke most of the sheep received consisted
of fed or killing stuff, with practically no
feeder stock In sight. The run was con
siderably smaller than for the same dsv
last week. but. on the other hsnd. It was
about three times the site of the run for
the corresponding day one year ago, when
about 124) head were received.
The supply of killing sheep and lambs
on the market this morning was quite light
and as tha packers have not been able to
buv anv sheen to sneak of for four days
they were most of them wanting a small
supply to fill the wants of their fresh
mutton trade. None of them however
were wanting a large supply. as the
weather hss been so verv moderate and
poultry and game so plentiful that there
has not been much of a demand for meats.
The mnrket opened rather slow with only
a con nl a nf load of fed western sheen In.
Packers bid steadv to strong prices readily
on this stuff, but the salesman held on
for better prices. Trading later on became
a little more active and closed practically
steanv wit 1 Inst Fr ituv.
There was onlv a sprinkling of feeder
sheep hardly enough to make a mnrket on
that kind of stuff.

not care for much stuff and
were not buvlng readily. Most or inn
beef steers were sold beiore the market
closed at practically steady prices.
There was a moderate supply of cows
and heifers 011 the market and buyers
apparently did not want much of anything
except a few loads of the good kinds of '
cattle. Real good cows and heifers sold !
at prices that were strong in most cases.
Trading was very dull and draggy. The
common to medium kind of cows sold at
prices that were generally steady to a
little lower.
There were only a few scattering loads
of Blockers and feeders on the mnrket
and these sold practically a dime higher
In most cases.
