Increased receipt of wheat at the principal grain centers of tho United Statea waa the uhlef causa of weak wheat market here today. At the, close wheat for May delivery was off a. Corn was down V(iVc. Oats showed a loss pf kc. I'roylolons were a shade to 6c lower ' Weakness In tha wheat market developed within the first few minutes of trading and continued until the close of the ses sion. Liquidating sales by commlsalon houses supplemented by aggressive short telling on the part of local bears caused declines ranging from to ISo. The greatest pressure was on the December opilun. This was due to the Increasing local stocks which, it Is said, might compel lungs to take large quantities of cash grain on Decer."ber contracts. Shipments from Argentina for the week were larger than are estimates of yesterday, but the move ment waa much less than that of the cor responding week of last year. Primary receipts were unexpectedly heavy, the day's total arrivals being 1,023.000 bushels, com pared with 729. Ono bushels for (he corre sponding day a year ago. During the day the market lacked positive support and the feeling was heavy until the close. The end of the session found the market weak with prices almost at the lowest point of the day. May opened unchanged to a shade lower, at mo to s7ji?iC. sola orr to 87 c, wnd closed at s7Ytc. December ranged be tween US and 24o and closed at 82Hc. clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 224,600 bushels. Exports for the week its shown by Bradstreets were equal to 4.472.300 bushels. Mlnneapolli Chicago reported receipts of 798 cars against 607 cars last week and 631 cars a year ago. Liquidation of the December delivery waa the feature of the trading In corn. Aa a result of this selling the price of that op tion declined lc. The selling was due to fears that there would be large quantities of No. 3 corn delivered on December oon tracts. Weakness of wheat waa :m addi tional bearish Influence. The close was easy. May opened unchanged to a shade lower, at 44V-t4Sc, old oit to 44tto and closed at 44WQ444C. December new sold be tween 46VC and 44-V' and closed at 44V-'-Local recelpta were 362 cars, with 10 cars of contract grade. Oats were depreased by the weakness of other gralna. On the decline that took place during the first hour a prominent house caused a steadier feeling by buying a large line of May. The May option opened unchanged to a trifle lower, at mlikii. I .oral receiDta were 226 cars. Provisions were weak at the start be- ckUKM of an early decline In the hog market. Later an advance of 6&10c was recorded in the price of live hogs and the provision market became steadier. Packers were heavy buyers. At the close May pork was i.rT 2Uc. at 313 60. ijird waa down voc at $7.37 Vx47.40. 'Ribs were a shade lower, at S7.22W. Dec. 22 Interest In the stock market converged very largely In the shares of the local transportation com panies. These issues were very strong and active on the announcement of a virtual conclusion of negotiations by which the Metropolitan Street Railway company and Its allied Interests came under control of the Interborough Rapid Transit company. tnus giving the latter Interests practical! a monopoly of all the traction facilities o Manhattan island Some sort of a deal involving thee Important properties has been expected for a long time, but Its exact form was alwaya a matter of Idle speculation. The exact details of the deal were not obtainable during market hours today, but enough was learned to indicate that the transfer would be effected on terms satis factory to the purchasers. The new Inter ests in Metropolitan are said to include several prominent individuals identified with the Pennsylvania and other great railway systems. So far as could he learned the Brooklyn Rapid Transit company Is not Included In the deal as It now stand, hut the fact that representatives of that company were In conference with the new Metropolitan Interests today was regarded as more than a mere coincidence. Change of control of Metropolitan Is said to carry with It Important concessions In the way of proposed subway extensions. It Is not unlikely that new securities will be issued for those outstanding In the name of the Metropolitan company. At any rate. It Is understood the" transfer from old to new interests will Involve a comparatively small cash outlay. The tractions led the market from the outset, thousands of shares of Metro politan Street Railway and Metropolitan Securities coming out at gains of from 2 to 4 points. Interboroug'.i opened on the curb with an advance of over 8 points and was the feature of that market throughout, attaining a new high record. Net gains of these Issues for the day were 2d for Metropolitan Street Railway, 4i for Metropolitan Securities and 6 for Inter borough. Third Avenue railroad, which Is leasea Dy tne Metropolitan, gained bv points. Transactions In these stocks aa a group constituted the major portion of the day's business, although the general market became brond and active in the face of a 16 per cent money rate. The prevailing rate of the day, however, was nearer 8 per cent. Shares of the Pennsylvania railroad and subsidiary companies, including Reading, l!altimore A Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio. Norfolk A Western and Pittsburg. Cincin nati, Chicago & Bt. Louis, were especially strong. Iong Island railroad, also Penn sylvania stock, which Is expected to proflt by the day's traction developments, scored a material advance. I'nlon Pacific went to a new high record, and an active demand for Southern Pacific advanced that atock a point. St. Paul and the North westerns and Atchison participated In the day's general advances. The only high class railroad issue to display weakness was Illinois central. Aside from the movements In Sugar and Irglnla-Carollna Chemical, there were no noteworthy movements In the Industrial group. Surprise was expressed at the fail- of the l nlted states Bteoi issues to make more Immediate response to the favorable trade conditions. The market reacted slightly In the Inst hour, but rallied In the final trailing, and he closing was strong. London was scarcely a factor here, trading in less than 15.000 shares, practically all sales. Forecasts of the weeks money move ments point to a small gain by the banks, despite the very heavy outflow. Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value. 23.490,000. The total receipts for the week are the smallest since the second week in Augtist. The run for the first five dnys this week is less than half the size of the receipts for the same time last week and is also stnitller than for the same days of the cor responding week one year ago. All of the sheep on the market today were killing stock. The quality of the one car received wa not of the best. However, the stuff sold early at a practically steady price. Packers, however, were not wanting much of a supply and It was perhaps a lucky thing that there were not more sheep and lambs on the market, as It Is probable that prices would have slumped some. Prices are only a shade lower for the week on the better kind of sheep, but warmed-up and short-fed sheep are lo 15c lower fur the week. It being a hard matter to dispose of thst kind of stuff at all. Quotations ;'nr fed sheep and lambs are as follows: Good to choice lambs, Colo radns. S7.40fS7.65; westerns, S7.rtlj(7.So; vear lings.
