WEAKER HOLDERS ARE SHAKEN 8UT Ir-lon Pacific Is the Backbone of the kpccnlatlon and Mock Is Pnshcd to fn Record Price. NEW YORK, Dec. 19 There was no fur ther trace in the stock market today of yesterday's hysterical lit over the Cnirago tiank failures. Speculative holders who had been swept off their feet seemed to have their comiiosure restored or to have given pluee to other holders of a firmer deter mination. It whs asserted, in fact, that t!e shuklng out of weakly secured holdings by yeoteroay's sudden slump had benefited the maiket. There wns evidence also of somo requirements to cover shorts which pre sumably were the after results of yester day's atlnrg on the market. Such hesita tion and uncertainty as were manifest In the market were traceable to t-onditlon normal to the closing period of the year and to the day's developments. However, there was a distinct revival of aggressive bullish srlrit In the market and many strik ing advances were recorded, although the dealing" were highly congested In a few stocks. I'nlon Pacific was the backbone of the speculation and was pushed up by seem ingly endless buvlng to a new record prlc". Tne hrokeis employed In tills buying made an occasion for rumors that the principal competitive transcontinental Interest was peeking effective representation In I'nlon Paclnc There were sharp advances In the norm western Pacllics. tor the most part the day's most notable movements were elsewhere than In the railroad list. A rather unexpected assumption of control of the Tennessee Coal and Iron company by the new purchasers seemed to arouse apprehen sion that the competition in the buying which has made the high level for thesim-lt might be considered to b" ended. A sharp break resulted. The marking up of Amal gamated Copper to par again had a streng thening effect on the general list. Adverse factors, which were feared, failed to make their appearance and the speculation waa Win cncournged to push its efforts. Money was qiiotably easier both on call and on time, notwithstanding some very large further shipments to T".ilcago througn private sources. The contribution to the money mnrket by the subtrcasury, In which the payment of the anticipated January In terest figures helped to this result, and last week's heavy dividend disbursements, were nlso given credit for a part of It. The sieatner Bailing tomorrow Is the last by which remittances can reach Ixmdon In time for the January settlements, and yes terday's demand was so urgent that gold exports were under discussion. Rut the tie mand today was surprisingly light In view of this circumstance, and sterling exchange early yielded from yesterday's advanced level. :ttanv Inrae demands, however, con tinned to center upon London and an ad vance In the Hunk of England discount rate on Thursday Is connldercd a possibility nile the Chicago bunk failures seemed to be relegated completely to the background the probability was d.scusned tnat the clear ing house settlement of the dlniculty pro ixmed might involve the tying up ot consid erabie resoutces, with possible effect im the money situation during the turn ot the ear. The decline in activity In the market was parm' attributable to the approach of the holidays and the normal dlsinisltlon at that time to c car up commitments, ai though the proposition to close the Stock exchange for an extra holiday on Suturday seemed to Hnd no favor. The sharp break In People's Uas was attributed by rumor to a. liquidation growing out or tne v. nicngo failures and Increased a disposition to taite iiiollts all through the market. Prices were carried considerably below the best In con sequence and some of the important gains completely wiped out. The closing was easy. After the close the reduced nlviuenu una re duced price ot jiHS put 111 effect by People's t;as became known. Following were the sales and range of prices on the Stock exchungo today: Sales. High. The supplv whs smaller than for the same day last week by about 3.414) head, and also smaller thun for the corresponding day last year hy a small number. As was the case yes terday, the qiialitv of the offerings waa generally rather common. A very fair portion of the supply con sisted of killing sheep and lambs. -The quality of these wns not of the best, and as a result the trade, while It opened actlvo, was only steady. Puckers were evidently wanting a supply of desirable killing sheep and lambs, but had to take what wu offered for want of better. A couple of loads of ewes of only common grade sold tarly for $5.00. while a load of western lambs also went early nt S7.1u, which, con sidering the quality, was a practically steady price. Almost half of the receipts this 1 lornlng consisted of feeder sheep and lambs. As waa the case witli the fat stuff, the quality of the supply was rather of an Inferior order. There were only a few country buyers In. so that trading was not very active. The market, however, closed the day at prices that were steady.
