From the Inter Ocean: "The holiday dull
ness has settled over the trade earlier than
usual, and there la an indiapositlon on the
part of most of the large operators to go
alow until the December la out of the way.
There la a falr-alsed open Interest In this
mouth, and It la dlflVult to execute orders
owing to the light trade. The Armour in
terest controls the contract stocks, which
are alight ly over .Yflf).im bushels, and will
evidently merchandise it this winter. It Is
believed to he hedged for May and it la
not pressing on the market."

Weak close In the hMl market here todav.
Other Influences contributing to thi result
were largo prlmarv tcceipta and a liberal
Increase In tin? available stock. At the
close May wheat Was (iff 4c I -nrn H

Provisions wtrn lyoTV higher.
During thp flrat hour thp wheat market
was leuisrkahly Hrin considering the un
easiness In financial circles following the
suspension of tho Walsh hanks. The llrm
neaa n largely the result of the bullish
character of the weeklv statistics World s
shipments for the week were nearly 4.oai..in
"lan for the previous week nnd a large
jx reentage of the decrease whs recorded in
the Russian exports. In addition to this
tho amount of breadstuff on ocean pas
sage decreased 4.5f-.' till, for the week.
After opening a shad! lower to a shade
higher at 77c to 8c the price of the May
option was bid up to sK,c- At this point
Wheat broke badly at Minneapolis and St.
Ixiuls, the decline being du. It is said,
to the bank situation In Chicago. Th"re
was heavy selling on order from these two
grain centers. This brought out free selling
oy the loca tralers. As tirlccs declined
stop loss orders increased the pressure and
the weakness became more pronounced. An

having been expected. Another factor
bringing on the decline waa the large pri
mary recelpta, which were 1.342,Ot bu., com
pared with l.iG4.io bu. a year ago. I mler
these Influences May declined to 7'c. I'art
of the lose was regained on covering by
shorts, but the close was weak with May
at 87-S'&7,tC. Clearances of wheat and
flour were equnl to .HM.OTt bu. Minne
apolis, Duluth and Chicago reported re
ceipts of 879 cars against M0 cara lost week
and 7S1 cars a year ago.
Increased receipts and the weaktv'sa of
wheat hud a depressing effect on the corn
market. Fit traders and commission houses
were the chief sellers. The close was easy.
May opened unchanged totVe lower at Vt'p
44V, sold between 44c and 44V and closed
at 4IV- Local receipts were 74ti cara with
( cara of contract grade.
Several prominent commission houses
were active sellers of oats today nnd the
market was Inclined to lie weak. The
break In wheat waa the chief factor, al
though Increased receipts had considerable
effect. The market closed at about the
lowest point of the day. May opened un
changed to a shade higher at 32Vi32V to
Sl'V. "old off to 31V and closed ut 81T.W
32c. Iocal receipts were 345 cars.
Notwithstanding the weakness of grain
the provisions market was firm throughout
the day. Offerings were small and sta
tistics favorable to the bulls. The move
ment of packing house products whs said
to be very heavy. Packers were the prin
cipal bidders. At tho cIohb May pork was
up 7V at II3.22H l.i'd and ribs were each
up 2V at $7.3"ti'J 324 and $7.15 respectively.

part of them oemg sold at I1"' and others
simultaneously all the way down to 03.
This was the extreme example of the
effect of the news on the Stock exchange.
although tlu r
were ery wide openings on
running sales In L'ldon Facltic, Brooklyn
I'tansil, St. 1'miI and oilier imrtanl
stocas at severe losses. In the curb market
l nitcd Copper, in which the speculation has
been very active recently, sold at ft then
abruptly slumped to if. These disastrous
effects In prices were due In a large meas
ure to the extremely heavy stop loss orders
which honeycombed the market Ht a level
slightly below Kuturday s closing. The
orders in such cases are to sell stocks
at any price In the event of the maraet
falling to a given point and the resulting
avalanche Is sure to gain speculative force.
This being the case, il was perceived that
prompt measures were reijulred to avert a
panic . Enormous support was accorded the
market ami the demoralized sentiment thus
alleviated. There was a secondary wave
of liquidation mado up in part of belated
orders in the market by outsiders and In
pail by those who were able to withhold
their felling during the opening period
when there was practically no demand.
The market ebbed and flowed over a
lesser range during the latter part of the
day, but the principal liquidation seemed
lo have spent Its force and the most
damaging part of t lie louses was recovered.
It was evident that the aggravated effect
produced by the Incident was largely due
to the overextended condition of specula
tion. Successful beculators have been re
investing their prolits in new purchases of
some. 01 the very volatile stocks, which
makes 11 Very insecure condition In the
market. During the latter pari of last
Week some misgivings began lo be perci p
tiblo already over the conditions resiililng
from some of the most violent specula
tion. This added to iho vulnerability of
tiic market.
As to the Immediate financial conse
quences of the Chicago mishap the prompt
measures taken by the Chicago clearing
house nnd tho Insurance against loss of the
depositors of the banks gave strong hopes
that the consequences would be localised
and restricted. There was nothing to show
that any New t ork Interests were nrfecteu.
The stock market view uf the affair was
founded more upon the possible effects
of the failures upon general business con
fidence and the standing of credits. Cred
its are heavily vxpended and bank re
serves are low and the lierslstency with
which the consequences of tho state of
affairs are Ignored, especially the high
rates for money, la due to the
universal
confidence in the soundness of these out
standing credits. Tho shock now given to
confidence urouses a dread tliHt some con
traction of credits will be forced and the
extension of enterprise hampered by a sus
picion of the soundness of the business
fabric. Money continued strong in this
market, but eased off later in the day In
spite or remittances to Chicago. Foreign
exchange was also strong for remittance
by the last steamer avullable for end-year
payments abroad.
ttonds were iienvy. Total sales, par
value. $3,210,11110. Tutted States new 4a

CATTLE The

receipts of cuttle today
163 cars, about 6.O0O head.
were moderate
being reported In. This Is about 91 0 head
smaller than the run for the same day last
week, while on the other hand It is about
2.0O head larger than the same day one
year ago.
There was only a small number of beef
steers on the market today, while there
was a moderately good demand for this
kind of cattle on the part of the packers.
The quality of the offerings was, generally
speaking, only ordinary. There was not a
very uctlvs movement to the market. In
fact, it was almost slow. Prices were in
practically the same notches as at the close
of last week.
The supply of cows and heifers on the
market tills morning was of moderate pro
portions. As was the case with the steers
the quality of the offering was only fair.
There was a fair demand for cow stuff, but
buyers were backward in taking hold, with
the result that the movement of the stock
was decidedly slow. Prices were generally
weak nnd lower.
The large portion of the receipts this
morning consisted of stockers and feeders.
Thete were quite a number or country buy
ers in. lrnning was
steady to strong.

HOGS Receipt of hogs were moderate
todav, sixty-three cars, about 4.3m head,
Is'lng received. The run is a trifle smaller
than for the same day last week, but on
the other band it Is about 90j head larger
than for the corresponding day lust year.
The market opened with prices In most
cases a nickel higher than Saturday s close.
Trading al the opening was rather slow;
later, however. It hecame a little more ac.
tlve, but at no time could It l call.-d par
ticularly active. There were no special fea
tures to the market. Receipts were hardly
up to expectations, which, fact, coupled
with the wants of the packers, aided In
forcing prices up. Good choice heavyweight
hogs were given the preference all during
the day and a few loads of this kind sold
earlv for $4 .85. the top The bulk of the
offerings brought $4 Su1j4 824.
