The local Women's Christian Temperance union will give its Christmas treat to the children of the Douglas county detention homo this year instead of the prisoners of the county jail, as has been tholr custom for many years. This decision was reached at a meeting Wednesday afternoon, after a spirited dis cussion. In which it developed that the ma jority of the members had long been op posed to taking sweemeats to the jail and had only continued the custom out of re spect to Mrs. Jardlne, who established It years ago. The general opinion was -that too much sentiment was wasted upon cal loused lawbreakers that might be expended with profit upon Juvenile offenders, and that, aa Omaha and Nebraska have fallen Into the line of progress with a juvenile court and probation system, It la the busi ness of such organizations as the Women's Christian Temperance union to give their aid to a work of prevention rather than to the reforming of adults, many of whom, according to Sheriff Power, preferred stay ing In jail to earning a living for them selves and family. The men at the jail will not be entirely overlooked, and Christ mas morning the union will give U each prisoner a spray of holly with some appro prlate sentiment of Bible verse attached by a white ribbon, the emblem of the Women's Christlun Temperance union. In stead of the fruit and randy that have been sent In the past. The afternoon of December 37, the union will go to the detention home with a box of bon bons and fruit and a gift fur each child in that Institution.
