"How Barbara Kept Hr Promise" by Nina
Rhoa4es, Is a nice little st.ry of two little
orphan slrls who cam to New Tork from
Ena-lanfl after their arandmother'a dath to
live with an tinrle. Their aunt, belns- un
accustomed lo children, aid not underaland
them and could not sympathise with tha
childish moods of the younger, llatel. 80
Kb decided to eend her to live with another
aunt In Washington, but knowing that
Barbara would not consent to a separation
she la not told of It until after It has taken
place. .Poor broken-hearted little Barbara
Immediately starts In search of the little
sister, whom she had promised her mother
always to care for. Barbara does not reach
the right Washington and disappears for a
month, finding a friend In a atranger who
takes her In. The story of tha search, her
discovery, the reunion with Hasel and hor
adoption Into the home of her aunt, where
Hasel In already established and loved by
the many cousins. Is vary Interesting read
ing. Published by Lea s Shepard.
"a History of tha United States from
MS A. D. to 1905," by Tnoma Wentworth
Hlgglnson, author of "Young Folk's History
of the United States," and William Mae
Donald, professor of history at Brown uni
versity. Is from the press of Harper A
Brothers. - The original edition of Mr. Hlg
glnson's "History of tha United States
of America" extended only to the close of
President Jackson's administration. Tn this
revised edition the authors have given tha
complete history of our country down to
the present time In a comprehensive and
concise form and In a convenient stsed
volume. Colonel Hlgglnson's powers of
clear and brilliant narration are well
known. The high rank of his original his
tory together with the collaboration of a
man of Mr. MncDonakl's ability certainly
Insures a high place for this lntest t.lstory
of our country. , ,
"Helen Grant at Aldred House" is the
third volume of the "Helan Grant Series,"
by Miss Amanda M. Douglas. Miss Douglas
has long been a favorite writer for girls
aa her "Kathle Books" have proven. Tha
fortunes of Helen Grant have been eagerly
followed through two previous books, and
she haa already been seen at her much
loved school, Aldred House, and great
sympathy was felt with her In the Interrup
tion of her course. In the present volume
she returns to. Aldred House, whe.re.her
girlhood gradually unfolds to enthusiastic
young womanhood. She is not very roman
tic, fond of study and has ambitious alms,
yet Is tender In her friendships, sincere and
helpful. In hor happy year at school she
attracts Mrs. Aldred's regard, which has
an Influence In shaping her own character
and in her effect upon friends. When she
la ready for college she has to choose
between the career that she has marked
out and the profferred lovea of more than
one. All the girls will be Interested to And
out what her decision Is. The hook Is
illustrated by Amy Brooks. Lee & Shepard
are the publishers.
"Daughters of the Puritans," by Seth
Curtis Bench, Is made up of brief biogra
phies of Catharine Maria Bedgwlck, Mary
Lovell Ware, Lydla Maria Child. Dorothea
Lynda Dlx, Sarah Margaret fuller Ossoli,
Harriet Beecher Stow and Louisa May Al
cott. These sketches are Quite out of the
ordinary run of conventional biography,
and there la more than a chronicle of dull
fact running through the pages. Even to
those familiar with the subject of the book
this volume, through its very manner of
treatment, will be a source of pleasure,
while to those less Informed It will convey
much Information In the most delightful
style of biographical writing. Published
by the American Unitarian association.
One of the attractive- gift books for. this
holiday season is entitled "Christinas Carols
Ancient and Modem," edited wliji notes
by Joshua Sylvestre. As indicated by the
title. It is a collection of Christmas carols,
attractively bound In a cover of green' and
white, while each pnge Is decorated with a
design in green. The book contains some
very fine illustrations, among them several
Madonnas and St. Ceceltas. The book Is
published by the A. Wessels company.
"Windsor Castle," by William Harrison.
Is the story of Henry VIII and Anne Bo
ley n. "Bluff King Hal.'.' although a well
loved monarch, was none too good a one In
many ways. Ho was headstrong, willful
and passionate, and was often ready to
sacrifice the publio welfare for his private
Interests. Of all hia selfishness and unwar
rentable acts, none was more discreditable
than his divorce from Catherine of Aragtin,
and his marriage to Anne Boleyri. - Henry
dented for himself and England the Juris
diction of the Church of Rome, and asserted
finally and forever that England's king, or
110. other, was beud of the church In that
country. The Immediate result was the
overthrowing of Wolaey. Meanwhile Henry
divorced Catherine and married the beau
tlful Anne Boleyn. The, king's love was as
brief as it was vehement. Jane Seymour,
waiting tuaid on the queen, attracted him.
and Anne Boleyn was forced to the block
to make room for her successor. This
mance is one of extreme interest to all
readers. Published by the A. I Beret com
pany.
