one reason for tla? firmness. Another was
reports of drouth In India. As tha sea

commission houses with northwestern con
nections. This selling pressure waa due to
a belief that the railroads would be able
to furnish cars In the near future, which
would result In a largely Increased sup

ened on reports that export demand was
very light. Increased primary receipts fur

Small local recelpta held the corn market-

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS

UNION PACtriC LEADS ADVANCE
Prices Break Ute In the
Day on Heavy Reallalng,
hat (inlet Reaction
fell
NEW YORK, Deo. 13-The Stock market
continued to show the organised operations
of speculative parties and pools In the
systematic, supporting measures In some
part of the market, while stocks were fed
t ut to realise profits at other points. The
other conspicuous points of strength early
In the day were amongst the specialties
and the tone of the market after a time
reflected an unfavorable effect on the senti
ment. The bad effect waa partly removed
by the coming Into prominence of Amalga
mated Copper and seemed entirely removed
by the reversion of the demand to the rail
road Hat, led by Union Pacific The trans
actions In these stocks were of extraor
dinary volume and Union Pacific rose
easily by successive stages to a new record
level. Its aggressive advance had much to
do In pulling up prices elsewhere that had
developed a pretty general sagging ten
dency, Including sharp reactions In stocks
which had been opened at violent advances.
Csll money was appreciably easier again
and standing loans of that class were re
newed by the banks and trust companies at
per cent compared with yesterday's pre
vailing 10 per cent rate. Assurance was
not fully restored that the money market
could be kept exempt from disturbance for
the rest of (he year, and the quotations for
time loan for the shorter periods continued
very firm with a commission exscted tor se
curing thirty, sixty and ninety-day loans be
sides the 8 per rent legal rate. But with the
Immediate s'upply of money mora plentiful
the Impatient speculation waa quick to
avail Itself of the meana afforded and to
rush Into any point of the market that
offered a promising lead towards an ad
vance. Less attention was paid to the
foreign situation and money markets abroad
showed no appreciable changes. Belling of
stocks for continental account, however,
was reported from London. The movement
In Amalgamated Clipper was but a supple
ment to tha universal speculative activity
In securities associated with the copper
Industry. Its advance to par waa greeted
with a demonstration. The price of the
metal continued to advance here and In
London and reports were current of sales
being made at much above the market to
secure early delivery. A faorable effect
was produced by a report that settlement
had been effected of the dispute over
freight rates for corn export averting the
threat of a war of rates between the At
lantic and gulf port terminals for this
traffic.
The easier tone of the call loan market
was closely followed by the recovery In
foreign exchange. The recent selling of
securities here for foreign account Increases
the demand for exchange. The statement
of agrlcutural exports for November, how
ever, showed an expansion In value over
those for the corresponding month of last
year of 811.802.165, the value of cotton ex
ports rising well over those for last month
and reducing the discrepancy with those
for the November preceding to less than
32.000.000. Exnorts of breadstuff and provi
sions, meantime, show a heavier valuation
than for anv month In more than two
years past. The assembling of the United
Mine Workers' convention, fixed for Mo
morrow, received a good deal of discus
sion and was held to account for the r fl
airs In t manifest In the movements of the
coalers. The judicial decision In the New
York municipal elections was the ground
for the flurry In the local public utilities.
The profit taking under cover of this last
movement came with a rush In the flnal
hour and sent prices downwards with some
precinltancy and especially in the buoyant
features of the day. But the reaction was
checked and some headway effected towards
a rally, leaving the closing tone Irregular.
The following was the range of prices on

There waa only a small supply of beef

of the offerings being of rather Inferior

that kind of stock.
As has been the case for the last few

SHEEP There was a fairly good run of
sheep on toe market today, thirty-eight
cars,. about 10,600 head being reported. The
receipt, for the flrat three days of this
week are somewhat smaller than those for
the same day. of last week. The run so
far thla week totale about 18,392 head, aa
against 28,249 head for the same length of
time last week. The receipts for the cor
responding three days of the same woek
last year were larger by about 1.0U0 head.

late.
There were not very many fat sheep on
the market, the larger portion of the run
consisting of feeding sheep. Thero waa a
moderately good demand for fat sheep on
the part of the packers, with the result
that trading on fat atock waa reaaonably
aotlve. Price, on thia kind were generally
In lust about the same notches as yester
day. A load of wethers sold early for 83.76,
a good price, while a lot of range lambs
brought 86.76.
There was a good run of feeder sheep
on tne market, the majority or receipts
being range feeders. There were also a
number of country buyers In so that trad
ing was reasonably active and price, were
practically ateady. Trading on lambs was
rather slow and the market on this kind of
stock was a little easier.
