VITAL POINT IN THE TAX HEARING Member of Board of Eaaallsatloa la Tkayer Coaaty Says Load There Was Assessed at Actaal Valae. Attorney General Norris Brown placed a number of witnesses on the stand In the Union Faclflc tax "se Tuesday morning to rebut the testimony offered by the rail roads that the assessment of land In Ne braska was lower than the actual value of the land. For some time neither side has paid any attention to the assessment of railroad property, the railroad attempt ing to show that real estate and mer chandise have been assessed too low and therefore the railroads have had to bear an unjust burden of the taxes. It Is now the Intention of the attorney general to put on wltneases from each of the counties In which the railroad has selected wit nesses to rebut the railroad testimony. As a basis for Us operation the railroad attorneys have secured a complete record of all the real estate transfers In the coun ties through which Ha line runs and these records are weed In the cross-examination of witnesses. 8. B. Bterrett of Merrick county, called by the state to testify as to the value of lands in that county, proved himself thor oughly familiar with all the land tn that county. He testified real estate had been assessed at its full value. He also swore, as an expert, that the consideration named In a transfer was not a good Indication of the value of property. Because, he said, in many Instances the consideration In the deed was Inflated for various reasons. Baldwin Calls Off Tracts. On cross-examination Jonn W. Baldwin called off several tracts of land by descrip tion and asked the witness if he was famil iar with them. In nearly every instance Bterrett answered in the affirmative and when asked, readily put a price on the prop erty. Ills testimony occupied almost all the miming. Several times he told of transfers that had been made wherein the selling price was less than the assessed value. H. V. Vandecar of Howard county, called by the railroad, test I fled land In his county had been assessed at about 68 or TO per cent of Its value. ' J. R. KatcllfTe of Merrick county, called by the state, said land In his county was worth on an average hot more than SJ7.50 to $30 an acre. Count Attorney McQuis tlon of Thayer county, a member of the County Board of Equalization, said land In his county had been assessed at ! full Jsrrett, wss arraigned for preliminary hearing In police court Tuesday morning. Allen decided to waive-the prellmlnarv. He was bound to the district court without bail.
