According to oftlclal sta tistics the condition of fall sown wheat Is 4.1 compared with 82.9 at the correspond ing time a year sgo. The total acreage Is estimated at 31. 341,000 against 31.156.0iO last year. The effect of this report was quickly dispelled by the announcement of a large decreaso In the visible supply of wheat, available stocks being reduced 2,232, 000 bushels during the week ugalnxt an In crease of 248.(i0 bushels for the correspond ing week of last year. These figures pro duced a firm feeling, which continued until the close. Demand by commission houses Bnd shorts carried the price of May up to SOS'S S9Hc. The market closed firm with May at 89H'5 89,4C. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 209.OK) bushels. The amount on passage Increased 1,51 2,om) bush els. SiC ; M. I IIHIU world as distinguished from nurelv soecula tlve quarters continued apprehensive of tho capacity of the money market t weather the turn of the year without some further convulsive activity In the department of loans for speculative purposes. The revere slon of speculative attention to the standard railroad stocks reinforced the feeling of confidence over the speculation. Attempts to take profits In the Industrial n'lTter of the market disclosed some difficulty In making that operation a success, and prices were inclined to yield rather easily undei the attempts to distribute holdings. The movement In Vnion Pacific was the strong sustaining Influence In the whole market. I Followers of the advance Into the region of new recora levels snowea some caution and a disposition to feel their way carefully, as seen In the recent fluctuations In the stock. Rut os often as It gathered force for a new advance the reassuring effect on the mar ket was quite perceptible. St. Paul kept effective company with Union Pactrle-and Southern Pacific also showed a naturally close sympathy. Other western and grain carrying stocks moved more moderately In spite of the good promise of the winter wheat crop contained In the government's monthly report. There was no special news to account for the movement In Union Pa cific. The speculative advance in Reading was aggressively renewed also, with much made of the discussion of the labor outlook and expressed confidence In its adjustment. Copper stocks of nil grades wcra very prominent In the day's speculation, both on the Stock exchange and In the curb mar ket, some of them. Including Amalgamated Copper, reflecting very heavy profit-taking. The latter rebounded strongly on the report of a further advance In the price of copper, but closed unchanged. The market for the metal In Iondon was very strong. The United States Steel stocks were perslstentlv sluggish until late In the day. but their be lated advance was effective In sustaining the late market. The action of the secretary of the treasury In ordering Interest on government bonds due January 1 to be paid on December 15 was not regarded In any quarter as prom ising replenishment of the money market, but great stress was laid upon It by the speculative contingent as an earnest of the Intention of the secretary to use the re sources at his comninnd for the benefit of the money market. The amount of this In terest Is $4.2O0.0C0 and by no means all of Its payment will center In the New York market. The excess of revenue collections thus far this month already amounts to al most that much und Is expected to be as much more before the end of the month. The rise In the discount rate of the Imperial Bank of Germany was expected. The open market discount rate In Berlin rose In re sponse today and exchange on London made a further decline, as It did also In Paris. There was a sharp recovery from the Saturday decline In the Ixmdon dis count rate and gold was marked up In that market. Foreign exchange rates here were t in iiuy iiciu hi oaiunmy e auviiniT, inr isi-i -lln rate being especially affected In re sponse to the action of the bank. The sub treasury continued to absorb funds from the banks, but It was reported that consid erable remittances were received from Canadian points. The taking of profits on the day Increased the Irregularity of the market toward the close, especially In the industrials, and the closing was decidedly ir regular, with prices In some cases at the lowest and generally below the best. Honds were Irregular. Total sales, par valu. $2,950,000. United States new 4s regis tered declined 1 and new 4s coupon H P"f cent on call. Local receipts were 4'.N cars with 6 of contract grade. Weakness of corn caused an easier feel ing In the outs murkct early In the day, but later the market became firm In sym pathy with wheat. Trading was fairly active. Mav opened unchanged to a shade lower at 31'Sc to X.Vu3Jc. touched 33c and closed at 32(i32'e. Local receipts were 219 curs. With the eiceptlon of moderate strength In the nearby deliveries of lard, the pro visions market was weak. The strength of lard was due to a large shortage re ported In stocks of this product. Shorts were active bidders for lard. Outside of this di'inand the market became Inactive. A decline of 10e In the price of live hog, which wim the principal weakening Influ ence, spread to the lard market lute In the seMslon. At the close May pork was off U'V"irc nt S13.42H.
