Secretary Met calf of the Department of Commerce and Labor, today dismissed the charges made by the World's Fair Navigation company of St Louis against Archibald Gordon, local Inspector of hulls at that port The Investigation was conducted by Assistant Secretary Murray and Deputy Commis sioner of Corporations Smith. Seventeen charges In all were preferred. In general alleging official Incompetency, misconduct and Improper discrimination between steamboat owners, as well as acts of op pression against particular owners. Both parties were represented by counsel and a number of witnesses, as well as the records of the offlco were examined. The report of the committee Btated that they found nothing in Inspector Gordon's conduct of his ofrtce which would merit even censure, much less removal; that while he made certain mistakes, they were either errors ot law In tbe necessary inter pertatlon of some legal questions, or were due to an earnest and conscientious desire to bring about a proper condition of af fairs on the steamboats In his Jurisdiction. The charges were declared to be wholly frivolous and without merit, and It was stated that "In the making of them and in ths effort to sust!a them there was not Indicated a genuine desire on the part of the complainants to improve the. effi ciency of the steamboat inspection service, but rather some other motive, having noth ing properly to do with the efficiency or Integrity of the Inspectors' work. . Trading on the Stock exchange was quiet and undecided owing to it being the eve of the mining carry-over. The grocery trade notices Increased number of ordeis for nuts and fancy goods, and the hardware men, already very busy with the large volume of trade which has continued all fall, are overwhelmed with orders for Christmne goods, such bs skates and slrda. Business has been satisfactory with the dry good" dealer nnd morn than pleasing to the shot trade. The recent cold snap has been n be no IK to both shoe and dry goods Jobbers, but the warm weather which followed caused trade to slack up a little toward ' the last ot the week. Dry goods house trade was light, probably iiioie than any thing else, -on account of the fact that the retailers came to Omaha two weeks ago to take advantage of the clearing f iles. No change Is reported In coffee prices. The worlds visible supply of coffen In creased 83.000 has for November, atiatnst an Increase of 20o.ooo bags for November of last year. Receipts for November were 4(0.000 bags less than for the same month lust year, and receipts thus far for De cember are much lighter than usual. There was a large movement In October, how ever, und the tutal crop marketed to date Is about the same as for the corresponding time ot last year. Europe has been a heavy buyer of coffee In the last week and American purchases have not been so large. Nevertheless, the United States has the linn's share of the Brazilian output thus far. The market la very dull and there Is no change In prices. The Russian trouble has caused some uneasiness, as It has In all the markets of the world. In grain and stocks. Scarcity of Canned Oysters. There Is very little new to report in the canned goods line. Tomatoes have strength ened up a little In the east, as have also peas and gallon goods of all kinds. Canned corn Is apparently gaining In strength and ? gaining friends.- As the retailers are mak ng a push on this article, the consumption seems to be increasing and the demand from the retailers consequently Increasing. The supply of .oysters still Is very lim ited and Jobbers are trading with one an other to take care of their orders. It probably will be ten days or two weeks beforo the supply la adequate to the de inn nd. The market continues exceedingly strong on peaches, apricots and prunes, with Verv llttlo prospect of any change from that situation. New York state apples are very firmly held, with no prospect of any reduc tion in price. The supply is so limited of these goods that it looks as if It were pos sible for all these goods to move out at present prices or better. California walnuts have been shipped very slowly and few nuts have come into me river markets. Some few have been received, but many of them have proved unsutisfai tory. At this season of the yeat the crop should have been well distributed, so that it looks as if there would be con siderable carry-over of this Item. . The' rice markut continues strong and higher prices are predicted after the first of the year. While jobbers are not con vinced that there will be any material ad vance, they are sure that with anything like a normal demand present prices will bo very easily maintained. The oats market la in a firm condition. Millers are going a pace in values and they are freely predicting higher prices. The demand Is unusually heavy. A new feature this fall has been the largely In creased trade In bulk goods. Sales of package goods, however, still continue heavy. Improvement In Sugar. Sugar shows an Improvement over last week, refined ruling 6H0o per hundred higher. It is thought barely possible by the Jobbers that there will be further ad vances before the lirst ot the year. What the market will do after that depends al most entirely upon the receipts of new sugar In January and February. A general Impression seems to prevail that lower prices may be looked tor in six or eight weeks. The demand Is fair for this time of year. Cheese Is practically In ths same posi tion. No change In prices has taken piaoe and the demand la good, as it was a week sgo. The last month of the year shows a con siderably stronger feeling In Japan teas than has existed for some time. Stocks in first hands In Japan are practically cleaned up and buyers must of necessity pay big premiums, especially on early May pick. The cause of the strength In tea Is the fact that the cost of labor In the tea growing countries has increased materially in the laat few months. Syrups enjoy a strong market and a good demand. The fact la that the Jobbers are selling this staple at considerably less than the figure they would have to pay to replace their stork. The present condi tions cannot continue, for when the Job bers are forced to replenish they will have to pay higher prices and make higher quo tations to the retail trade. The demand at New Orleans Is active, with both dealers and baking interests buying freely of de sirable grades at firm prices. Low grades are In. good demand. Dry Goods and Shoes. House trade has been quiet with Omaha dry goods Jobbers for the last week, but i.un uustiicaa lias been good, both from traveling salesmen and direct from retail ers, so that total sales have been quite sat isfactory. The cotton mnrket continues strong, and since the government report appeared Monday each day has recorded further advances. Bleached goods of all descriptions have advanced V,(lfo during the laat week and four-yard brown goods of the best grade Is now held by the Job bers at OVic. An advance In staple prints Is looked for and retailers sre anticipating their wants freely In this Una. Collections are reported very good. Salesmen from eastern manufacturing companies called on the local shoe Jobbers this week. end. although the latter antici pated high prices, they were surprised by the fiKures uuoted on goods for next fall. The manufacturers are up against present prices of hides now, not being able to fall back on their old stock of leather, for It has been used up. With gradually stiffen ing prices In hides, they have to keep ad vancing on shoes. Jobbers have selected and ordered a large part of their stock for the fall of 1906. I Trade has been excellent since the recent I cold snap up to Thursday, when It fell off a little.
