Omaha on Tuesday, December S, 1906, at 9
o'clock p. m., in the Council Chamber In

avenue from Howard street to Jackson

The Thanksgiving holiday and the go
companyltig cold snap have caused a re
vival of tiade after the lull of tiie last two
or three weeks. Farmers stopped husking
corn a day or two and came to the towns
In such numbers that they exhausted the
stocks of the retailers In man lines of
goods. As a result the Omaha Jobbers
were very busy people Friday and Satur
day. A large business was done in whole
sale dry goods and shoe houses and one of
the grocery firms had the largest mall In
Its history Friday. Most of the corn is out
of the field now and trade Is expected to
continue uniformly good for the first half
of this month, after which it will be brisk
until Christmas.
Receipts of coffee are falling off all the
time, but so far this has had no apprecia
ble effect on the market. The United States
now practically controls the coffee trado
of the world. All the surplus of the Bra
slilan crop is in this country and the big
dealers have secured It at their own price.
This country has much more than In
former years and all other countries have
less. It now remains to see what the big
holders will do. There Is no reason for
higher prices unless the uestlon of a duty
on coffee should come before congress, and
this is considered very probable.
Jellies and Jams, both of fancy and me
dium grades, have advanced materially In
tho last three or four weeks and hlaher
iirlccs are looked for. The trade Is advls
ng retailers to carry liberal stocks.
The price of cranberries Is higher than
has been known for years. Ppnt stocks In
Omaha are entirely exhausted, but new
supplies are expected In two or three days,
though dealers cannot name prices.
stiffening Prices of Fish.
Holland herring are stiffening up anil
there has been an advance of 2c a keg on
linporteu oiders in the last few days. Tho
catch Is about over and It Is about 200000
barrels less than last year. In Irish mack
erel there has been an advance of 50(750
a barrel In the last week. There Is every
indication that a heavy trade will begin In
dry and suit fish nfter the first of the
year and hlKher prices are looked for along
the whole line.
Another adv.tnce of 10c g g-nllon has taken
place on bulk olives. This makes an
actual advance of 35c a gallon over the low
point of a few months ago. As stated In a
recent crop report, the entire crop is about
one-twenty-fifth of the usual output, and
there is no telling where prices will go be
fore another crop Is on the market
Nothing is changed In the sugar situa
tion, prices being practically the same as
last week on both raws snd refined. On
account of the Thanksgiving holMav there
were no quotations on sugar the latter part
of the week. There la nothing to Indicate
lower prices and the general Impression
prevails that they will be higher. There
may be a considerable decrease In price
about January or February.
Lower quotations are rullne; for November-made
cheese, which Is Inferior In qual
ity to the fancy October-made. So far this
has had no effect on the cheese market In
senerul. Stocks are said to be extremely
light. Jobbers say it looks as though lower
prices would prevail before long for fancy
goods.
Canned and Dried FT nit.
There are no radical changes to report In
the canned goods situation. Canned pean
are one of tho articles attracting consider
able attention, because of the shortness of
the pack and because of the fact tnat good
quality of standard goods have been ad
vanced about 10 cents per dozen. The higher
grades ore in more plentiful supply and
there is not so much Interest In thesa
grades. ,
No change la reported In either corn or
tomatoes. The buyers are going as far east
as New York state to get kraut, while,
ordinarily nothing Is brought In except'
Wisconsin or Indiana goods. The market
continues to harden on gallon apples, and
In .fact most everything In the way ef
gallon pie fruit. There has been a slight
auvance in euarter oil sardines, these goods
being marked up 16 to 26 cents by the pack
ers. No change Is yet to report In
mustards.
The market still shows an advancing;
tendency on evaporated apples, as It does
also on peaches and apricots. Many lines
of California dried fruits are so small that
It is hardly possible to quote the market
The supply of pears Is practically ex
hausted; bo also la the supply of nectarines
and pitted plums. Not In many years has
the supply of California dried fruits at
this time of the season been so small as It
Is at the present time. California operators
and other well posted operators are pre
dicting a 4'4-cent basis for prunes, which,
is 1 cent per pound above prices that can
be secured today. These predictions ara
based upon the supposition that 1 cent per
pound advance will not materially curtail
the consumption of these goods. Thlss
basis of price would still make the medium
size sell three pounds for 25 cents, while tho
large size would sen for la cents, or two
pounds for 26 cents.
Men of the trade expect higher nrloes for
certain lines of dried fruit, particularly
peaches and apples, than have been seen
In a good many years. This extreme price,
however, probably will not be effective
until along In the latter part of May or
June.
Best posted operators say the supply of
rice in the south Is not much more than
half of what It was this time last season;
that the crop Is about S.ooo.ouo bags, against
6,i).0oo last year. If this Information Is
correct the trade must look for cons.dnrahlv
higher prices in rice. Add to this informa
tion the well known fuct that Jap rices
are not plentiful In the south, while there
Is a preponderance of head rices, and It Is
readily seen that Jap rices must continue
to advance to nearly a parity with head
rices before the end of the season.
With Dry Goods Houses.
Trade with dry goods Jobbers has been
good, althoug Interrupted by the Thanks
giving holiday. Oruers direct and irom
traveling salesmen have been satisfactory
and a good house trade has been done.
All effort is being maue to clean up tue
stocks of winter goods by price reduction,
and many good sales have been made. The
advance ordt-r business on spring roods
has been much lurger than last year, and
he distribution extends to all lines. In
cluding dress goods, underwear, factory
goods and hosiery. Cotton goods are very
strong In first hands and the advance on
otne makes has been VgWo in the last
lew days. A number of large retailers
who are well-informed, are placing liberal
oiders for staples, In order to secure deliv
ery and favorable prices. Collections have
been lifc'ht. but they are expected to linprovo
In December.
Brisk Trade In Shoes.
It'ls the same old story with shoes. Tho
manufacturers are becoming firmer In their
Idea each day, as they get down to tho
basis of present prices for hides, few of
them having any considerable quantity
on hides which were bought at lower fig
urea. No advances have been quoted dur
ing the week by Omaha Jobbers. Trade
ha been slacker than usual during Novem
ber, on account of the unusually line
wather. With the first snap of cold It Is
beginning to pick up attain now, and mall
orders have bee" corning In In considerable
numbers, indicating that the retailers havo
disposed of large quantities of shoes In tho
lubt few days.
Activity la Sporting Goods.
Hardware dealers have enjoyed a week
of enormous trade. Business has been
good In all lines, but especially In sporting
goods. Ouns and ammunition and hunting
sails have had a run seldom equalled. Snow
shovels and stove pipe have also been In
good demand. Prices remain tne same,
except in the Item of solder, which, mora
on account of speculation than anything
else, has advanced l cents a pound.
