CllpCA-fK. Dec. 1. An advanoe In the
nrice of wheat In foreign markets had a
trenglhenlna effect today on the market
here. The close was firm, with May a
shnds over the closing Quotations Of
Wednesday. Corn was up c, oats showed
a gain of He and provisions wore weak
rlosinz St a loss of 10'(i3.'V4c.
With the exception of a slightly easier
tono at the Immediate opening sentiment In
the wheat nit throughout the day was in
ellned to be bullish. Influenced by liberal
shipments from Argentina, opening quota
lions were a trifle lower, the May option
heinv down a shade at SiPVu S8VC to (',0
OfTerlnas. however, were light, the small
movemen t In the northwest having a tend

In the market on moderate buying by some

May dellveiy advanced to bic. Some re
r-cticn occurred late In the session as a re
sult of selllna Induced by a revised estl
nate of the Russian crop, which placed the
total vleld of that country at 643,000.CX
hushela. ncainat 6H4.000.000 bushels last year
the revised figures showing a conslderab'o
increase over previous estimates. Strength
of cash wheat at all grain centers In the
United States helped to slistaln the price of
options. The market closed firm, with May
at SViMlc. Clearances of wheat and
f.our were eoual to 245.500 bushels. Export 4
for Uie week, as shown by H racist reels,
mra eoual to 3. 700.000 bushels. Primary re
celpts were 1.028.000 bushels, compared with
NXrtiii bushels a year ago. Minneapolis,
Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of
T70 cars, against 948 cars last week and 7S a
year ago.
A firm tone prevailed In the corn market
throughout the entire session. The May
option was In fairly active demand by a
leading bull and the December delivery was
eagerly taken by shcirts. The almost total
absence of contract grade corn In dally re
ceipts accounted for the demand of the De
cember option. Decreased shipments from
Argentina helped to stimulate bulllah senti
ment. Shipments of corn for the week from
that country were I.t:i9.0n0 bushels, com
pared with ?.6;oi for the corresponding
week of last year. The market closed
strong, with prices at almost the highest
point of the day. May opened unchanged
to c higher at 44ft44Hc. sold between 444
xuvo tA 4.if7 and closed at 44e.
Local receipts were 251 curs, with 2 cars of
contract grade.
Oats were firm In sympathy with other
grains. The market wss also affected by
the absence of any deliveries on December
contracts. Cash houses and elevator Inter
ests mere fairly active purchasers of the
December option. The demand for the
resrhy option tended to support the more
distant delivery. Export demand showed
some Improvement. May opened unchanged
to a shade higher at SIViiCc to S2e. sold up
to J2V" and closed at 23 32He. laical re
ceipts were tit ears.
Provisions were weak as a lesult of ag
gressive selling by a leading packer. De
mand from outsiders was almost nothing.
' At the close May pork was oft at

were KVn5o lower at 17.15.

NEW TORK. Dec. 1. There continued to
be Individual cases of strength In tne stock
niaigel tooay amongst tne usually inactive
specialties, out tne effect In counteracting
tne general depression was less marked
than tor tne earner days of the week. Hie
tried of these movements has shown a pro
gressive auciine tnroi.Mnoul tne week.
The depression wnicn became dominant
In tne market today pad Its most imme
a late cause in the course of the money mar
ket. Not only was tnere a repetition of
tne flurry of Wednesday In the can money
rate, out tne interest rates on time loans
were marked up snarpiy, and tor sixty
day loans a commission was exacted in
addition to the 6-per-cent rate, wnicn
amounted to a premium above tnat rats.
The statement of the regular express
movement of currency furnished by the
banks, which covers only live days tins
week. Indicates a balance In favor of this
center. But the heavy translers to
tenor points turougu tne sub-treasury and
the losses to that Institution on routine
operations are large enougn to more tnan
ottset the .gain on the regular express
movement. Besides the loss tnus Indicated,
w tuch seems to be something over 2,uumm,
tne movement ot gold to Mexico iiiubi ou
taken Into consideration. There has been
traced to this movement $i,7to,0uii and It
is deemed possible that tnere has been
more sent which has not come to the
knowledge ot the public. This movement
Is attracting widespread discussion owing
to ita being caused by the rise In the
price of silver bullion above the mintage
price of silver In Mexico. The buying of
Mexican coinage witn gold is mus a profit
able operation. The effect upon the money
market here is watched witn keen atten
tion. How far the money market of the
day was affected In addition by the tem
porary requirements of the December set
tlements was a matter of some difference
of opinion.
llie Russian situation was of more in
fluence today than at any time during
the disturbances in that country, even dur
ing the period of military revcrsus In the
Japanese war. The effect here In the
way of selling securities for foreign account
was not very Important, but sinister re
ports were In circulation In the financial
district as to commercial and financial
conditions In Russia. Paris was reported
to be selling Russian notes In London to
secure gold and the sterling exchange rate
at Paris fell sharply In a way to Indicate
renewed pressure from that quarter upon
the London money market. Sterling ex
change here also fell sharply under tho
offerings of finance bills prompted by hard
ness ot the local money market. Discount
and money rates, however, eased In Lon
don. The market must meet some un
filled requirements for the redemption on
next Thursday of $70,000,000 of exchequer
bills. While tho completion of the opera
tion will tend to ease money conditions
In Ixindon the end of the year require
ments will have to be prepared for at
once. The same period offers special re
quirements to this market. New York ex
change at Chicago fell to 10 cents discount
today compared with par on Wednesday.
Something was made In the speculative
discussion ot the approach of the assem
bling of congress and the threatened rail
road rate legislation. The news of the re
linquishment by the Erie of the Cincinnati,
Hamilton A Dayton and Its reversion to
J. P. Morgan was regarded as explaining
the recent failure of the Erles to share
In the rise In the market owing to the
dissatisfaction now known to have been
caused by that project. The lowest prices
of the day were touched In the last half
hour of the market with the closing tone
easier. '
Bonds were easy. Total sales, par value,
$2,925,000. Unit d States bonds were all
unchanged.

CATTLE There was a small run of cattl
on tne maraei touay, ioity-tnree loads,
about 1,100 head, being received up to noon
The run for the week so far totals li.vsj
head. This Is the smallest run since the
third week in August, but Is accounted for
to a certain extent by the fact that Thurs
day was a holiday and no cattle were re
celved. As compared with the receipts for
the corresponding week last year the re
ceipts for the week are smaller by about
7,tAj head.
There was naroiy enougn fat cattle on
the market today to make a test of the
trade. There was a good demand for beef
steers on the part of the packers and they
were willing to pay good strong prices for
good choice stock. There were a couple of
loads 01 corn-ieo steers on tne mantel, nut
they were not of very good quality; how
ever, they touno reauy sale ui prices that
were fully steady with those of Wednes
day. Gem rally speaking, however, the mar
ket on beef steers was a strong dime higher
than Wednesday s close.
There was a small run of cows and heifers
on the maraet, tnere oeing nardiy more
than u sprinkling or this kind of stuff In
sight. At the same time there was a good
demand for cow stock, with the lesult that
good stock found ready sale at prices that
were about a dime nigner tnim tne market
on the same icinu or siock vveunesuuy.
There were only a lew scattering loads of
stockers and feeders on the market this
morning und there was not much of a
larket for these tew, as speculators were
evidently not caring for much stock and
there were only a few country buyers in.
As a result the trade was rather dull, with
prices steady to a tiille easier. Repre
sentative sales:
