C. E. Wheeler, a wen known lawyer of
Cedar Rapids, Ia., spent Thanksgiving In
Omaha and related a strange Incident of
the finding of a bullet In the grave of a
veteran soldier which was the means of
securing a long deferred pension to his
widow.
"The dead soldier, Evans by name, had
been wounded In one of the western bat
tles with a mlnle ball Just below the right
shoulder," said Mr. Wheeler. "The bullet
remained In the body, but Evans was a
youngster at the time. In the prime of phy
sical vigor, and aside from a week or so In
the hospital, the wound did not seriously
discommode him. He continued In the
service until his enlistment expired at the
close of the war, when he returned hom
and married. A few years following Ms
marriage he was stricken with a peculiar
disease, which had the effect of causing
Mm to grow thin and his appearance mot
tled and sallow, eventually causing him
to turn to a yellowis i brown color. His
health otherwise was fairly good, but he
died suddenly about three weeks after his
Illness first set lu. ,
"His widow put In a claim for a pension
within retisx t able time after his deatli

was the res lit of an old wound. Special
examiners looktd Into the caso and de
cided that Fv.ns death wss due o natural
causes and the pension was denied the
widow, who. It was shown, had an Inoomo
sufficient to bar her from a dependent pen
sion. Matters ran on for many years, the
widow still Insisting her husband's death
was due to his wound. So persistent was
her claim the pension depat .ment finally
sent a special examiner to Citlar Rapids a
year or two ago lo disinter the body of
the soldier. The ca.tKOt w.ts m a fair stat
of preservation, and while thu body wss
much decayed, n careful investigation re
vealed the presence of an ounce mlnle bul
let, encased In a fragment of the dead
man's liver, which was shown conclusively
to have been the cau-ie oi his death. The
widow soon was gran'ed tho pension
claimed. Thus had this bullet, after a

Thus did Daniel Barnes, a coal Mack,
strong-looking negro, explain himself to
Judge Day of the district court Friday
morning, and thus was he disposed of. It
was with a most' solemn rolling of the
eyes that Barnes told the court he could
"go the. .route." He had keyed Mmself up
to the pitch where he was willing to con
fess that whisky Is bad medicine, and Ms
further explanations of how he came to
break Into Harry Marowltx's store and
Joseph Schmidt's houBo were along- the
lines of laughable wrestling with PrerMent
Roosevelt's English. As he sat down after
sentence he was quite contented.

Through an Item appearing in Tha Bee
several days ago relative to the mysterious
disappearance of Albert Sesseman, son of
a distressed mother living near Omaha, the
boy has been found and restored to Ms
now happy home.
It was thought at the time young Sesse
man had enlisted in the navy and an In
quiry was made at the naval recruiting
depot for him. It was ascertained he baa
not enlisted in the navy and further In
quiry from the Navy department at Wash
ington elicited the Information he wm not
In the navy at all.
The Bee's Item relative to young Sesse
man's disappearance attracted the attention
of an acquaintance and the young man
was Anally located at Fremont. The boy
had neglected to write to his mother, and
In fact had forgotten his own Identity com
pletely, until a friend seeing The Bee's
story and knowing something of the bov's
antecedents, took an Interest In the case
and the reuniting of the son and mother
was the result.
Mrs. P. H. Gottehelmer of 403 South
Twenty-fifth avenue appeared at the United
States naval recruiting depot In the federal
building Friday morning to make inquiry
of her son, George, who has mysteriously
disappeared, thinking he might have en
listed In the navy. The boy has been ab
sent about two months. Her quest at the
recruiting depot was unavailing, for no one
of the description of her son had put In an
appearance at he depot for enlistment.
