Thia is part, of the financial side of
the' Harriman scheme of construction

before , completed, will be the biggest
railroad building undertaking ever known

Th. work of. recoostructlon which has
lxn going cn on all the Harrlmao roads
since that great man acquired control of
these lines is about done. The transporta
tion facilities have undergone a continuous
process of Improvement for five years,
' which has brought them up to a maximum
of excellence, and this work is about done,
that Is for some time to come. So Mr.
Harriman is now ready to proceed with
his scheme of building new lines.
Mileage fader Way.
At present 46 miles of new railway are
projected. . Not sn Important line is In
cluded, nor dos this include the line
across central Oreiton. These are all small
cuts-. ..Yet I13.OW.0UO have been set aside
for their construction and $0,000,000 more
will be set - aside for the central Oregon
line. Alt these'' lines, most of which are
under ' survey or construction, are to be
completed by January 1. 1907. But beyond
this time limit this great campaign of
railroad building Is to go on. At least three
years of continuous construction, it Is
said, will be consumed before the plans
now laid aut by Mr. Harriman are con
summated. Then, railroad men of au
thority say, this wlsard of the west from
the east will, with his Union Pacific as the
basis, have acquired domination of the rail
road -situation and have the end of the
suing wrapped around his whip hand.
Branch lines is what Harriman is going
to butld. For every one branch of the
Vnlon Pactflo now there will be two and
almost the same ftolloy, It is understood,
will obtain wlh reference to the Southern
Pacific. Oregon Short Llue and Oregon
' Kallaay and Navigation company. Readers
of The Bee already know of some of the
projected Urwa In Nebraska, but Mr.
Harriman Is UnVipg further than tlie
boundaries of Nebraska or any ottwr one
state of this .west. He looks out upon the
vast ptalna and Tim- of Oregon. Utah.

Who Will Be the Star Actor f
Having come as near as possible to per
fecting the system of his transportation I
department, and brought his main lines up
to a high standard of service, Harriman
now turns his attention to the work of re
construction, hence the man In the center
of the stage in the theater of this system's
wonderful activities Is the superintendent
of construction. Railroad men are asking
the question: "Who Is this man to be?"
Not with emphatic coherence, but In a sub
dued tone the answer, from some sources,
comes, Horace G. Burt. Since his retire
ment from the presidency of the Union
Pacific Mr. Burt has done nothing but
skirt the globe. His future, since returning
to Omaha, has been a matter of great In
terest to railroad men. An Intimate friend
of Mr. Burt'a recently said Mr. Burt him
self did not know what he was going to do.
.The masterly work of rebuilding the Union
Taclftc Is credited up to Horace O. Burt.
As an engineer and construction man he is
regarded a peerless. It is believed Har
riman wanta him and will get htm If pos
sible.

The determination of Harriman to enter
new territory In the northwest can only
mean, in the Judgment of railroad men.

for Harriman roust inevitably get Into Hill's
province. The tank Is viewed as one of
tremendous Import, requiring great nerve.

between these two great railroad kings.
Railroad authorities assume that Harriman
will not simply tap the Hill fields, but once
over the threshold, will penetrate far into
the interior. Hill, it is observed, recog
nises this fact with clearer perception than
any one else and therefore is preparing to
marshal his forces In more formidable
array than has yet been necessary. In order
to combat the encroachments of his ag
gressive adversary.
One of the highest executive officers of
that system said a few days ago In Omaha:
"I do not believe Mr. Burt could be in
duced to accept any offer Mr. Harriman
could make."

There is just one large room in The Bee Building,
which is vacant at the present time. This happens to
a particularly choice one, the corner room on the second
floor of
The Dee Building.
This has a beautiful hard wood floor and is finished
tliroughout in oak. Klectric light, heat, water and
janitor service are included in the rental price of the
room, which is $40 per month. .
