The slate Into which the npeculntlve movement had fallen In the lant few dayn, especially the wild move of yenterday. caused aotne perturbation and aroused a fear that they were of a kind which would run ouickly to diminution, owing to the violence of the manipulative method pur sued. Very attractive profits also were offered at many points In the market. The consequence was that the selling move ment, once Inaugurated, grew of its own force with the renult of a general show of weakness by midday. Speculative profit taking wan especially conspicuous In Read ing. Smelting, Brooklyn Transit. Anaconda and the southern group of Iron Bnd steel stock Pome of the late rumor which have circulated In connection with opera tions In all of these stocks hHve been so little credible that those who hHd bought on the strength of them were ennlr thrown Into apprehension upon their deniHl. A bad effect upon sentiment waa produced nlno by the evidence of a lack of mipport In the Rock Inland group and the rapid decline In price there under light liquida tion. Rumors circulated that there was to be no dividend paid on the second preferred tock of the St. Ixula fc San Frunclaco company, which was the weakest stock In the group. It was not. however, until the enormous demand for I'nlon Pacific developed thnt any effective resistance was offered to the general weuknesn or tne market. The character of dealings In I'nlon Pacific stamped everywhere early as of highly centrallxed origin, and the favor able view of the market was that the demand was from Inside sources based on knowledge of the character of the annual report, the publication of which la looked for tomorrow. Reports were circulated that the disposition of the company's Northern Securities assets a disclosed In the report showed such large profits as to Justify the movement. The view of the movement as of speculative origin found encouragement in the fact thai the opera tions In the stock were on a very large scale on tho part of the same operators who concocted the recent movement in Heading. A wager was offered from this source thnt I'nlon Pacific waa destined to reach 175 on the movement, in exactly the name manner that a wager was made early In the Heading movement as to it ultimate Hi!', price. There wu no notable change in actual conditions. Prices of iron and steel, ac cording to trade authorities are held down onlv bv main force. A a general rule the quality of the offering was rather on th Inferior order. Then. too. trln were late gain and at 10 o'clock a third of the stock was mill out. There were no beef teer of any cone nuence on ale today, while the demand from dressed beef men wa very good and prt'-es were generally very well sustained. There was practically no native-fed stock on the market and fliere were only a few loads of short-fed or warmed-up cattle In sight. The most of the stuff received wa ranee cattle and It waa mostlv of rather Inferior quality. However, the demand made by the buyer wa active and good choice stock found readv sale at price that were generally eteudy lo strong. The supplv of oows and heifers wa rather limited and deirnbe tock met with readv sal at price that wer In most rane steady to a little atrong. There wa good demand for the better kind of cattle and that cla found readv sale at atrong price, whit the common and medium grade went at tead price. There was reanonable active trade on stoekere and feedera and orlces continue to hold steadv and strong for all offering of good quality. The run of feeder today wa small, nur tne nemanu waa tiv both by countrv buyer arid yard specu latora. As haa been the ease lately rough heavv grade went largely to the killer, hut the good lightweight grade and vear linga found ready sale at steady to strong price. Representative sale BEEF STEERS.
