BAUM WILL , IMPROVE STORE Mitles Immense Purchases in East vitli View of Creating Cer tain Cbspgci. J. K. IJunn. proprietor of the Bennett store, has returned from an extensive trip to Ni w York, where he haa been making a thorough study Into the department store business with a view of making improve ments In his large establishment. Mr. llaum Huli: 'Omaha Is getting to be a great retail center and it is surprising the way the retail business la growing, and to care lor its share of this increase the toennett i-ompany does not intend fo be caught napping. I mado some very extensive pur chases in the east and the people of Omaha will hear from theso as soon as they arrive. Business is remarkable at present and cau only bo accounted for In two waya first, that the city la growing and growing fast, and second that the out side people are coming to Omaha in larger numbers to make their purchases. Of course, we must also consider that there to an Immense amount of new building going on In Omaha at present and every man who wants to work can work and get good wages for his time. I think many who were In Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben week and did not buy because of the big crowds have returned to make their purchases A Skin of Beauty it- Joy Forovor. DR. T. Superintendent Morris of the Associated Charities and the police officials have been notified by the Minneapolis authorities to be on the lookout for a couple who gave tbelr names at Mlnneaiolls as "Dr. Joseph It. Bowen and wife," and who Imposed on the public and churches in the Minnesota city by selling tickets for fake church con certs. It Is reported the man and woman would have the name of some church printed on the tickets, proceed to sell the ticket for a concert which would not be given, and then leave the city. The same racket is said to have been worked by the same parties at Cincinnati, St. Louis, Louisville, lirand Itapids, Indianapolis, Co lumbus and other pluces. Mr. and Mrs. Uowen are reported as having bought tickets for Omaha. Water Hates. The Omaha Water company, regarding the advertisement of water rates by the Water Board of the city of Omaha as calculated to mislead citicena and water consumers with respect to the facts of the situation, desires to say that th re duced rates attempted to be fixed for Omaha consumers by the Water Board have not become finally established, but are still the subject of controversy In the courts, the water company contending that the Wster Board had no power to reduce the rates because of the city's original contract with the company fixing the limit of the company's charges, which the com pany has' never exceeded, and contending also that the reduced rates are unreason able. Should these contentions be sustained as the result of the company's pending suit, all consumers who shall have mean time paid only the reduced ratta will be subject to legal proceedings for the re covery of the difference. Should the re duced rates lie ultimately established the companv will, of course, refund to each consumer who shall meantime l.jm paid the full rate th difference between that rat and the rate aa reduced. TUB OMAHA WATER COMPANY, By E. M. FAIRFIELD, Oenenil Manager. Omaha, November IS. 1905. HERDMAN FOR THE CHARTER Assistant City Attorney Says This Talk of Invalidity I All Foolishness. "It's all foolishness." said Assistant City Attorney Ilerdman as he grabbed for some records and started on a run for the court house. In speaking of the talk of testing the legality of the city charter. "This talk is coming from people who either want to hold onto their Jobs or from people who want to shirk their taxes. The charter is all right and It will stand the test of the courts. The school levy Is all right and perfectly legal. If the charter Is tested In the courts it will be declared constitutional and all this talk about It being bad amounts to nothing." Mortality atiaies.
