MONITORS HONOR JOHNSON
(lob Olrri Farewell Bnaaaot te
Iepartlne Member of the
Organisation.
Theodore Johnaon, Jor the last twelve
years s rfl5pnt of this city and promlnrnt
In the political councils of the Swedish re
publicans of this city, and for the last five
years a member of the Board of Education,
as well as preoldent of that body for one
term, was last Tuesday evening tendered a
complimentary and farewell banquet at
the Monitor club by his friends.
Mr. Johnson, who has been manager for
the Robert Dempster company, the local
house of the Photographers' Supply trust,
has been promoted to the charge of the
Chicago branch of this concern and leaves
with his family for his new home.
A sumptuous repast had been provided
and the rooms were beautifully decorated.
(Justave Andreen, the veteran representa
tive of the Swedish nationality of this city,
acted as toastmaster for the evening and
In his usually hnppy mood Introduced the
various speakers of the evening. The presi
dent of the club, Fred W. Flodman, spoke
for the honored guest and the good he had
accomplished for his countrymen. The vice
president, J. Bundland, spoke feelingly for
the family of the guest of the evening and
the loss which will be keenly felt among I
their wide circle of friends left behind. t
Consul Stenberg, John Steele, Sam Burg
strom and others testified to the hold Mr.
Johnson has on the hearts of his friends I

public official.
A handsome cigar and tobacco service, In
the form of a monitor fully equipped for
action, was presented to Mr. Johnson as a
sonvenir from the club.
The Monitor Club quartet enlivened the
occasion with several selections. Covers
were luld for fifty.
T1IE CHAKF CONCERTS.
I'lrat One Opens the New I.yrle The
ater Seat Thursday Rrenlngr.
Over one hundred of the best known
names In Omaha appear on the subscrip
tion list for the season of concerts which
has been projected by Clement Chase for
this winter at the new Lyric theater. The
first of these will be next Thursday even
ing, on which occasion this little gem of
a theater will be thrown open to the pub
lic for tha first time. The opening con
cert will be by David Blspham, always a
favorite in Omaha, and a quartet. Beats
may bo secured at Hoape'a or by tele
phoning the Excelsior office.
The opening night bids fair to be quite
a brilliant eveqt. as society wilt turn out
In force. The theater Is located en tha
ground floor of tha Rohrbough building,
at Nineteenth and Farnam streeta, and Is
complete In all Its appointments, though
on a miniature scale. The seats are tha
latest style of opera chairs and will be
found to have plenty of knee room. There
Is quite a balcony, reached by a flight of
only six or seven steps, and the demand
for seats la the balcony has been quit
noticeable.
Water nates.
The Omaha Water company, regarding
the advertisement of water rates by the
Water Board of the city of Omaha as
calculated to mislead citizens and water
consumers with respect to the facts of
the situation, desires to say that the re
duced rates attempted to be fixed for
Omaha consumers by the Water Board
have not become finally established, but
are still the subject of conljuveisy In the
courts, the water company contending that
the Water Board had no power to reduce
the rates because of the city's -original
contract with the company fixing the limit
of the company's charges, which the com
pany has never exceeded, and contending
alno that the reduced rates are unreason
able. Should these contentions be sustained
as the result of the company's pending
suit, all consumers who shall have mean
time paid only the reduced rates will bo
subject to legal proceedings for the re
covery of tho difference. Should the re
duced rates be ultimately established the
company will, of course, refund to each
consumer who shall meantime have paid
the full rate the difference between that
rate and the rate as reduced.

A "tunning Window Display.
Probably the most attractive window
from the artistic and strictly seasonable
viewpoint that has yet been a feature
of nny of the big department stores Is at
present drawing large crowds of sight
seers at the southeast corner of 16th and
Harney that of the Bennett Company.
It Is called a Thanksgiving Window, be
ing devoted entirely to good things sug
gestive of dispensation on November 20.
There are some novel and very clever
artistic touches, the centerpiece being a
cluster of subdued electric lights incased
In varl-colored glass In the form of huge
bunches of grapes; In the forefront and
laid flat Is a long sweep of mirror, on
which are tastefully dispersed several ele
gant vases In hand painted1 china and
brilliant cut glass; some very attractive
pieces of silverware, bonbons, fruit dishes,
etc. In Just the right corners are dis
played some superb samples of brass can
delabra and electroliers in brass and copper.
Tho background of the display, which
occupies the two corner windows of 18th
and Harney, is prettily hung with hand
embroidered Irish linen, the centerpiece of
the whole being a superb Thanksgiving
table richly laid with the daintiest of
serving utensils and presided over by a
lordly scion of the genus turkey.

Relief for Survivors . of
Russian Massacres.
To the Jewish People of Nebraska:
The atrocious barbarity of brutal mobs in
liussia, when neither age, sex or condition was
spared, has made thousands of Jewish homes in
that unhappy land houses of mourning.
With the details .of the . recent sickening
horrors caused by unbridled passion and fana
ticism, you are already advised through the
press. Every city and village with but few ex
ceptions, has become a Kischeneff, where
wretchedness and desolation have overwhelmed
the maimed and starving survivors who have
lost their bread winners.
To help these unfortunates with financial
aid is the least we can do to alleviate their dis
tress. Humanity demands our immediate as
sistance. This appeal is therefore directed to
you perconally, wherever you may reside in
Nebraska, to at once Send your contribution by
bank check or postoffice order, to Morris Levy,
Treasurer, Fifteenth and Farnam Streets,

acknowledged, and the disposition of the funds
collected will be announced in the press.
