the citizens of the fort. In their real for

It was In lM that General Sherman was
sent to Inspect the fort and report to tha
War department the advisability of erect
ing substantial buildings there. As Gen
eral Sherman walked down the street of
tha little village he was hissed by the
eltlsens, who were generally southern sym
pathizers, and, as a result, he recom
mended that tha fort be abandoned anil
his . recommendation was carried out by
the department.
General Culver's desire to rebuild the
old fort Is the result of a visit there during
the recent National Guard encampment at I
Kearney. He found the place still well ,
marked with walks and portions of the
old earthworks, and around the. parade
ground Is a row of large Cottonwood trees.

History of Fort Kearney..

records, and a result of his labors Is
given In an Interview as follows:
General Stephen Watts Kearney, on his
memorable march from the Missouri river
to the Rocky mountains, designated the
precise location for the fort, and soon
thereafter the name was changed and
called Fort Kearney In his honor. Instead
of that of his nephew, General Phil Kear
ny, as generally supposed, but was Bpelled
Kearny, but through some fault of tho
Pustofllca or War department, the "e" was
added, making It Kearney.
No Improvements were made by his
. troops, but he was followed by Major Ruft
In the fall of 1847, who had command of
4(0 mounted riflemen from Missouri. Major
Ruff reached Nebraska City as winter
closed tn, and he went into winter quar
ters on the bluff, which bears the name
of old Fort Kearney, derived from the
troops destined for the new fort, wintering
at that place.
( As soon as spring opened and the grass
was of sufficient height to afford forage
for his horses, he resumed the march and
arrived at Fort Kearney la June of 1848.
The major proceeded at once to lay out
the fort, build adobe house for his men,
construct a powder magazine, plant trees
around the parade ground, which deflntely
murk, the place today.

ber: William L. Marcey, secretary of war In
President Polk's administration, under
whose order Fort Kearney was located.

Stephen Watts Kearney, who was ap
pointed from New Jersey to West Point In

of the Mexican war was promoted to briga

with Mexico and service in New Mexico
and California. Died October 31. 1848.

There were also stationed at this post
Colonel Tom Majors, Major Pallas and
Captain Pollock.
In 1866 the War department authorised
Inspection to be niadd to enlarge the post,
with a view to the erection of substantial
buildings. It was later visited by General
V. T. Sherman, who was In command of
the Western division. He appeared well
pleased with the location; but as be passed
through the straggling village, whoso In
habitants depended upon the fort for their
support, and who were largely opposed
of southern sympathizers, lie was hissed
by the people and offered various insults
and, after conversation with some of the
officers and men and citizens, tho general
remarked that 1 e had no desire to assist
n tie support of disloyal people and, on
his l eooinmi mlatiun, the fort was aban
doned In lSii".
I had been informed that there was
nothing left of Fort Kearney, but a visit
to that point in August, accompanied by
Colonel Jenkins of this city, showed much
of Interest.
Tho parade square was surrounded by
two rows of mammoth cottonwoods,
planted probably by Major Ruff, and be
neath the blue-grass sod rests the old
gravel walk. In the center of this square
Is the hole from which the flagstaff has
been taken, and at the north' the remains
of the old powder magazine. To the south
east the parapets and fortifications were
distinctly outlined, and It would take but
little work to restore the earthworks to
their original condition.
In 1848-49 came the rush from the north
west, ast and southeast to the gold
fields of California. Old Fort Kearney was
great American desert Long wagon trains
and eager gold hunters looked to the gar
rison of this post for protection across
the plains of Nebraska,
While no Important engagement with the
Indiana took place within the vicinity of
Fort Kearney, its historical prominence
Invites the attention of all patriotic people,
who, I trust, will inaugurate a movement
that will result In the purchase of the
land contained In and surrounding this
fort and make of It a national park.

BOYSEN DRIVEN FROM LAND

THERMOPOLI3, Wyo., Nov. 11. (Spe
cial.) The reported blowing up of the
diamond drill outfit of Asmus Boysen on
the Wind River Indian reservation ha
been confirmed, and one outrage has fol-
'owed another. The drill outfit was blown
up ten day ago, and last Saturday Boysen
received an anonymous letter warning him
to leave the reservation with his outfit
within fcrty-elght hours or all would be
i destroyed. Boysen did not wait (or tha
raiders to carry out their threat, but
quickly moved just across tha boundary,
and Is now In camp waiting some word
from Washington. It is doubtful, however.
If Boysen will again Invade the reserva
tion, for feeling here Is strong against
such a move, and 1t Is doubtful if Boysen
rould secure protection, even though Secre
tary Hitchcock has ruled that he may
prospect on the 180,000 acres of his original
lease.
The authorities are doing everything pos-
slhla to learn the identity of the raiders.

MEXICAN AMBASSADOR TALKS

WASHINGTON. Nov. 11. Senor Don
Joaquin de Casasua. the newly appointed
Mexican ambassador to this country, who
arrived In this city yesterday, conies to
this country under the brightest circum
stances. He expressed himself yesterday
as highly pleased with his new post and
spoke In very appreciative terms about the
cordial reception tendered hlin while In St.
Louis, in which city he stopped ou his way
to Washington.
Just as he was about to start for this
country he was taken sick and even now
has not quite recovered from the effects of
his illness. He will be able, however, to
attend to the affairs of the embassy and
today will call on Secretary of State Root
to discuss with him the plans for his first
formal call on President Roosevelt, on
which occasion he will offer to the prest
dent his credentia,ltj.

Alcoholism Ceases Death.
KANSAS CITY, Nov. 11. An uutopsv held
by the deputy rounty coroner shows that
alcoholism caused the death of John Dixon,
former private secretary of I'nlted States
Senator William Clark of Montana, who
was yetserday found dead In his room at a
local hotel. Dixon formerly lived in Minne
