Confirmation of re ported liberal shipments from Argentina contributed heavy to weakness today in the wheat market here. At the close the price of the May delivery was off Vk(ffo. Other staples also are down; corn lVanflVic; oats vgvjc and provisions JHtjMfC. The weakness In wheat prevailed through out the entire session. Belling was active and general -the greater part of the day. At times the bull leaders supported tne market openly by liberal purchases, but efforts cf this sort caused only small temporary rallies, Commission houses. while fair huyers st intervals, were com pelled to execute numerous selling orders for stop loss account. This added ma terially to the weakness and gave addi tional encouragement to bears. Interest centered In the enormous shipments of wheat from Argentina. Total exports from the South American republic for the past week were 3.232,000 bushels, compared with only 742.000 bushels the corresponding week a year ago. A cablegram from Argentina reported the weather there as favorable for the new crop. Receipts at Minneapolis, Duluth and Winnipeg showed marked In crease and helped to stimulate the selling movement here. The market closed weak at practically the lowest point of the day. Mav ODened ie lower at ga4iSHe. sold at 16)Hc soon after the opening and then declined to S8Ve. Final quotations were at KoViflaSSaC. Clearances of wheat land flour were equal to 812.001) bushela. Primary receipts were 1.23l,o0 bushels, compared witn i.oan.ooo ousnnia a year ago. Minneapolis. Duluth and Chlcttgo rerorted receipts of 1,031 cars, agalnat 806 last week and 801 cars a year ago. The government report showing a total yluld of 2.700,000,000 bushels of com in the United States waa chiefly responsible for a sharp break in corn prices. It wss a view that did not receive much countenance In banking circles or outside of speculative circles about the Stock Ex change. A decline of $8,000,000 to $10,000,000 within a week in the cash holdings of the banks, with the surplus reserve at the beginning of that period down to $2,354,275, while speculative borrowing continued Into this week in attempted extension of opera tions for the advance at some, points seems sufficient explanation for the necessity on the part of the banks to curtail loans. It is by 'no means unusual for Interest rates for commercial houses to be held down to a 6 per cent rate In the midst of violent flurries In the call market on the Stock Ex- charge. It Is this comparative trnq'HH1ty of com nerclal I Merest In rates 'hat Is offered to explain the relurtanoe of the secretary of the treasury to take any measures for the relief of the money market as far as the speculative needs are concerned. The week's operations of the banks with the sub-treasury alone, show a loss of $".127,000. the variation in the estimates of the total cash loss having to do with the amount of the movement by exnress td the interior which all the banks agree, however, has been heavy. Tee high rate for money ts an effective barrier aralnst foreign pressure for funds upon the New York, and forelarn exchange made a further wide decline tndtv. Thla was In splt rf a hardening of discounts In Paris and P"rl!n. Offerlne-a of bankers' bl'ls In the exchange market against loans placed In the money msrket was the prin cipal factor In the weakness of evehanw.
