The entire Omaha police force will be on
duty again Monday.

Board of Fire end Police Commissioner!
after A. II. Harvey, clerk to the board,
had ehown the commissioners there will be
money enough and some to spare to main
tain the whole force until the end of the
year, Mr. Harvey had been doing eome
figuring Monday, with admirable results,
and he lost no time In communicating
his discoveries to the board. Instead of
being badly In the hole It was framed a
short period of rigid economy and the
appropriation of $7,00 from other funds by
the council and mayor had put the police
department in excellent financial condi
tion. .
Not only will there be cash to pay the
complete quota of officers, according to
Mr. Harvey's calculations, but enough left
over to buy one and possibly two new pa
trol wagons at a cost of $750 each.
The commissioners Immediately got out
orders to the chief to put bach: ten men
till off the force Monday and to the clerk
directing him to advertise for bids for one
open end one closed patrol wagon.

It's like this." said Clerk Harvey when
reminded of the direful things predicted
when the department was chopped In two
and half temporarily discarded; "the comp
troller estimated the deficiency at $9,000.
T figured It at only about $7,000. The mayor
and council shoved over about $7,000 and
the saving made by the men while they
were off will give us about the $1,600 needed
for the new patrol wagons. Of course a
good deal depends upon how the expense
bills run for the rest of the year.
The patrol wagons are much desired by
the board and the police department.
Those In use have seen about sixteen years'
service. In deciding to advertise for bids
for plain wagons the board abandoned the
Idea of buying automobiles, because of the
Initial cost. It was thought two old-fash
loned wagons now were better than one
automobile In the distance, particularly
when the automobile Is something of an
experiment. The board thinks it has no
money for experiments.

' t alon Pacific Discloses Route
of New Line.
The Illinois Central has made some radi
cal changes In Its time card for the benefit
of the traveling public. Trains to and
from Chicago and St. Taul and Minneapolis
have been put on a faster schedule and
new trains have been added. These changes
are effective Sunday.
Train No. X which now leaves Omaha
at 7:60 p. m.. will leave at p. m., and
reach Chicago at 7:Sfl the next morning In
time for all eastern connections. It will
be made up of new sleepers and carry a
club car. The time will then be thirty
seven hours to New Tork, twenty-seven to
Buffalo and twenty to Detroit. Train No.
$ will leave for St. Taul at 8:60 and arrive
at Minneapolis at 7:15 and Et. Paul at S
a. m. Train No. 4, the day express, which
now leaves Omaha at 7:25, hereafter will
leave at a. m., and reach Chicago at
:). ' Instead of 9:35, making a saving In
time of forty minutes. Train No. 1, the
Chicago-Omaha ' trnln, will leave Chicago
at p. m., as formerly, and reach Omaha
at 7:30 the next morning instead of 8:06,
making all connections. The new train is
the fast mail, which will carry passen
gers and be known as No. 6. It will leave
Chicago at 2:66 a. m. and reach Omaha
at 3:66 p. m.. carrying a diner and making
the Journey In thirteen hours. Train No.
it will leave St. Paul at a. m. and arrive
at Omaha at 8:40 p. m., shortening the
time two hours.
The route of the Union Pacific from
North Platte west finally has been made
public and will be of Interest to many
who have land In that vicinity. The new
branch will leave the old line at O Fallon
and cross the river about six miles from
Paxton, and then follow the river to
Northport along the north" bank. It will
go through the settlement of Llewelyn and
the town of Oskosh.
Land In the vicinity of the new line has
advanced In value over 26 per cent In the
last three weeks. Valley land, suitable
for Irrigation, formerly was sold for from
$20 to $3S per acre and land In the hills
brought from $2 to $5 per acre. During
the month of October the Union Pacific
has sold land to the value of $275,000, and
since January 1 has sold $3,265,000 worth of
land In Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming,
Utah and Kansas.
