CONDITION OF DM AH A'S TRADE
Jobbers in All Lines Flstisd with
Existing mUrkiU
BUSINESS IS STEADIER AND URCER
Retailers Report They Are Dola Bel
ter Than lOver Before Changes
In the Trio of Groceries)
and Dry Goods.
All lines of wholesale trade are enjoying
a strong, healthy demand. The fluctuations
as to tho volume of business which cliiu
acterlied the market earlier in the fall are
no longer here and while trade is not as
large as it was for (H-rhaps one or two
weeks It averages much larger for a serle
of weeks. Farmers have their work now
at a point where they can take their time,
about husking their corn and are buying
largely from the retailers, who say their
business was never better. Omaha grocers)
have all they can do to fill orders with
promptness and the same may be said of
all other Jobbers. Prospects are for an un
usuully large trade all through the winter.
Dry goods Jobbers report a good house
trade for the week. Direct orders and
those from salesmen also continue heavy.
Some lines of heavy cottons are being sold
out, particularly napped goods, blanket!
and underwear, and as manufacturers are
running- on gumlM fur next year, it is al
most Impossible to have the orders filled.
Cotton goods of all descriptions retain
their strength and some advances are
threatened. Advance buying for spring I
very large and printed wash fabrics are
selling well.
Coffee has undergone no material change.
Storks are light everywhere except New
York. A big liquidation has been going
on, outsiders and weak holder selling out
and the coffee going into stronger hands.
The output is still 2iV),000 bags behind that
for the corresponding period of last year.
Sevens are quot d t H to 8 cents.
The sugar market has eased off a trlflft
this week on raws, both in Iondon and
New York. Jobbers consider that the In
dications point to lower prices for refined.
Cheese Goes Still Higher.
Cheese' is active and higher, prices being
He over those of a week ago. Some of the
best Informed brokers predict a famine of
the October -make. Buyers have held off
on account of the previous high prices,
thinking that a reaction might take placn
on curtailment of consumption. On the
contrary, the consumption has Increased,
and when the buyers tried to get the fancy
October make they found the holders re
luctant to pun with It at prevailing prices.
At present there are more buyers than
sellers. In New York 60 per cent of the
factories have been closed and the re
mainder will close in ten days; In Wis
consin 40 per cent have been closed and the
remainder will close in two weeks. Indi
cations point to higher values.
The demand for canned goods continues
UnU8Uallv SOnrl nnrl lAV.ra lh ...H (..
Corn Is not moving as freely as could be
wisurii, yei me orders keop coming for
fair-sized lots. The price, however. Is
badly demoralized because of tho fact that
almost every Jobber Is seeking to unload,
and the question of cost does not appar
ently enter into tho sltnnHnn i m-,,i.i
seem to the well Informed that the retailers
-uuui mi wen to stock: up while tho Jobbers
are badly demoralized. It hardlv looks
possible for this class of goods to sell much
be ow prices now ruling. There Is an
active demand for peas, with a tendency
to advance the market; In fact, the market
Is well denned up and any change must
be for a higher basis of values.
Apples Attract Much Interest.
The item nf absorbing intn.o.i .u .
last week was evaporated apples. The sup
ply in sight is excedlngly limited. More
over, there were a good many short sellers,
who were compelled to cover, and these,
facts, coupled with the tm-t nm i
a decidedly heavy trade In this article cov'-
ii ii-Kiiimaic wants, has forced tho
market up nearly H40 a pound. There la
otherwise very little change to report tn
the dried fruit market with the possible
exception of currants, which have scored
an advance of c per pound within the last
nil uays.
Unusual actlvltv h hnan Aim!,,, I..
the rice market caused by an unusually
heavy demand for actual needs, together
With a SOeCUlativA movement rannoil V.
the well known fact that the crop Is de
cidedly short. Under stimulation of this
kind the market has advanced In the south
from 8tfc per pound for choice Japs to 4i.
which is now the asking price for the
same grade of goods. Prediction Is made
that a 6c market will prevail before the
end of the coming week. The demand Is
active from the consuming trade, and It
looks as If the present market would not
only be sustained, but further advanced In
ine near iuiure. The crop In Japan Is so
short that they cannot give America any
supplies, but. on the other hand, will them
selves be compelled' to use large quantities
oi leiariu rices.
Conditions In Shoe Trade.
Shoes have not made anv srlvnnre fnr th.
week. The tendency In raw materials Is
firmer and this has a firming effect on
shoes. Ixcal Jobbers say the recent report
from Chicago that ehoes would advance 25
fer cent in a few weeks was exaggerated.
Ildes have advanced that much In tho
last few weeks, but this does not mean
that the price of shoes will be correspond
ingly Increased. There Is no doubt, how
ever, that the advance will be strong this
winter. Trade Is excellent with Omaha
shoe concerns.
