CHICAOO, Oct. 90 The Russian crisis buoyed Up prices today In the wheat mar ket here, although a temporary alnktng apell on enrly protlt-taklng followed a sharp break at Liveipool. Closing prlcea for May were up a ahail compared with tlnal llg ures of Saturday. The December option allows a gain of e. Corn is up c. Oaia and provisions are practically unchanged. The wheat market opened weak on heavy profit-taking: and on liberal short selling by commission houses. May was off yt' o at 81ijHlc. December was down at 89'kv4,o. At the start the market was Influenced by a decline of lilc In the price of wheat at Llverpofil. Another factor that had some effect was the wet weather In the American southwest, where rains were greatly needed to germinate the fall sown crop. Shorta took advantage of the opening weakness and covered freely, forolng the price of May up to 91c and December to 9oc. Further profit-taking reaulted In another reaction, but prices held above the lowest point touched on the open ing transactlona. It waa soon evident that several bull leaders were supporting the market and picking up all ofTertngs. This eventually started renewed profit-taking by shorta and reaulted In a complete recovery of the earlier loas. A cablegram from Odessa stated that there was a possibility of shlomenta from that port being stopped tomorrow. As a result the market during the last half of the session continued strong. For May the highest point of the dav was reached at 9ic. December ad vanced to 800. The market closed strong with May at WSifcSl'ie. Final quotations on December were at 90-Sc Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 82,uOO bush els. The amount on passage Increased 1.704.000 bushels and the visible supply In creased l.liu.OOO bushels. World's shipments of last week were reported as lii.12a.0oo bushela compared with 10,856,000 bushels tile corresponding week a year ago. The Rus sian and Danublan share of this total was 6,776.000 bushels. Primary receipts were l.&A.OOO bushels compared wltn 1,52S.0"0 bushels a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of 1.147 cars against I.206 cars last week and 1,2'J8 cars a year ago. The corn market was influenced largely by the situation In the wheat pit. Commis sion houses were sellers early, but later became active buyers. Shorts covered freely late In the session. Local receipts were considerably In excess of the amount estimated. This had a bearish effect at the atart. The market closed strong with prlcea at the highest point of the day. De cember opened (io lower at 4i'! 46c, sold between 4bWaVxi and closed at 4tic. Local receipts were 309 cars with 34 cars of contract grade. Heavy liquidation caused weakness in tha oats market early in the session. Later he market responded to tha strength of wheat, a steady to firm tone being mani fested. There was no particular change In the grain situation, shipping and export demand still being urgent. December opened K&fec to e Tower at 81c to 3V 80c, advanced to 30o and closed at 30o. Local receipts were 401 cars. provisions were nrm on an excellent snip ping demand for lard. The rapidly decreas- ng stocks of lard formed the basis or the demand for that product. At the close January pork was unchanged at 312.46. Lard and ribs were each up a shade at 30.83 and S6.&2. respectively. intimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat, 847 cars; corn, 267 cars; oats, 441 cars; hogs, 84,000 head. Stocks rose sharply tins morning In aympatny with tne improvements In foreign markets, In duced tiy more hopeful feeling regarding tne prospect of Russian attalrs. A brisk rally in Russian Imperial 4a was ths best uchnite indication of this feeling. In.) price of wneat In our markets run off in accordance with the same Influence while stocks were advancing. Tha upward shoot in me quotation to the advance In wards fluctuated until the strung rally at tne last. The lack of any. engagement of gold for export was made something of ' to rally speculative sentiment, although the down Hard movement of exchange away irom the gold export point was quite clearly due to the advance In the money market. Time loan money also was firmer and quotably higher. It is believed that the principal factor In the flurry In call urnty w.13 the calling of loans by the bunkers having In charge the recent Japanese loan flotation. It is understood that November 1 la the period set for turning over the Sroceeds of that loan to the custody of the apanese fiscal agent and that the day's calling of loans was In preparation for thut operution. There were other largo requirements to be met for ths November 1 settlements, preparation for which also was responsible no doubt for the disturb ance in the day's money market. Following the transfer to Chicago on Saturday to the sub-treasury of tWo.WO an equal amount went to tne same destination today and reporta were current that the demand from thia source within the next few days will call for further large sums. St. Louis also took 32O0.OOO today. The price of gold was marked up in London and sterling exchange fell In Berlin and remained stationary in Paris at the low price of Saturday. The Bank of England, however, was able to secure some large sums of gold arriving in Lonaon. The money question was thus brouaht prominently to the front again and the enthusiasm of the opening market was chilled. A few stocks continued to make special movements, due to Individual causes. American Smelting went to a new record price, incited by the current rumors of a comprehensive merger in the metal Industrials, and Locomotive showed the benefit of the extraordinary demand for Its product. There was no change In the tenor of the weekly reports of railroad traffic managers. The cry of car shoi-Ugos was practically universal, and railroad officials profess to be making every effort to reduce shipments rather than to solicit freight, and they find freight blockades unavoidable with their best efforts. Some of the reports of net earnings of railroads for September which made their appear ance today were decidedly favorable. There was much discussion of the probable showing to be made by the United States Steel corporation of Its report of net earnings for the September quarter which will be given to the executive committee of the corporation at its meeting tomorrow. A very favorable showing was the general expectation, but the i ocks if the com pany wero little affected. Of this the larger portion con sisted of feeders, there being no great number of fat oattle in sight. There was only a fair supply of corn-fed steers on the market this morning and they went at prices that wers Just about steady with those at the cloaa of last week. Ths supply of western steers was very small, thers being hardly enough of that kind of cattle in sight to make a test of the market. But what few there were on the market went at prices that were at least steady with those of the closs of last week and there appeared to be a slight tendency towards stronger prices on them. But there were so few on the mar ket that It was hardly possible to tell just how the market on western steers was running, but Judging from appear ances It Is safe to call it steady on all kinda of beef ateers with a slight ten dency towards stronger on ths mora choice kinds of stuff. Cows and heifers were reported as being Just about steady with the prices of lust week and on the more choice stuff it was Just a trifle stronger in some apots. while on the common and medium grades the market waa jiiKt about steady. There was quite a sprinkling of cowa and heifers on ths market and taken aa a whole the mar ket Is fairly steady with the prlcea of last week's close. Canners were selling a little lower In some cases, but on the more choice kinds of stuff the market was Just about steady. The majority of the stuff on the market this morning consisted of feeders and the demand fnr them was fairly active, there being a considerable number of country buyers In. The market on the best grades of feeders was steady to a little strong, while on the common and poorer grades It was steady to a little easier. But taken as a whole the market was steady with last week's close. BKEF STEERS. Ko. At. fr. No. Ave. Pr. The trains this morning for the first lime In a long time were In earlv. so that most of the stuff was In the barns In good season. The trade ss a result opened early and at the aame time was fnlrly active. The large buk of the recelpta today consisted of feeders with a majority of them lambs. Fat sheep were not very plentiful, there being a sprinkling of them In slKht, while the market for them wns active because of the big demand made for them by the packers, aim have been trying to get thia kind of suPDlles for the lust week or two. The market opened steady on everything desirable with n slight tendency to stronger on the more desirable kinds. There was a decided scarcity of fat lambs on the market this morning and the feeling In regard to lambs of this kind was rather bearlnh. Btivera pointer! to the lower ten dency of prlcea at Chicago and aald that fat lambs were lower, while sellers were pointing to the small supply at this point and Insisting that prices here were steady. There was a larao number of feeders on the market this morning, but In spile of this the market remained Just about steady on the more desirable kinds of stuff, while tho common si tiff was not quite so active with a slight tendency toward lower prices. Taken as a while the market on feeder stuff of all kir.ds waa ateady. There were a number of feeder lambs on the market thia morning, but the buyers were willing even to take that kind of stuff. There was an unusually large number of country buyers In today and this served some to keep the market on thin kind of Btuff steudy.
