CHICAGO. Oct. 4. Probable curtailment i
of shipments of grain from Russia, owing
to the spread or labor trouniea, waa largely
responsible for firmness today In th wheat

nltlal firmness waa an advance In tha
price of wheat at IJverpool, eaid to be
due to smaller offerings of wheat from
Russia and Danublan porta. Unsettled
weather In the United States waa another
factor, instrumental In stimulating pur.
hasea. Tha government bureau officially
forecasted quite general rains for tomor
row. Greatest significance, however, waa
attached to cable newa suggesting In
creased European demand for foodstuffs.
The railroad strike In Russia attracted
much attention, especially dispatchea stat
ing that the labor disturbances were
spreading and were liable to be of long
duration. A blockade of the railroads, it
was asserted, would seriously hamper shtp
ments of grain from , Russia and would
cause greater demand for American grain.
Aa a result ahorta and commission nouses
here were active bidder during the greater
part of the day. For December the highest

firmness to the corn market. A feature of
trading waa heavy purchases of the May
delivery by a prominent operator. Total
purchaaea by thla one trailer were said
to have been over 1,000.008 bushels. Higher
prices at Liverpool helped to stimulate
demand for corn here. A decrease for the
week of 642.0U0 bushels In the visible sup

NEW YORK, Oct. 24 Probably the chief
Importance to be attached to today'e mar
ket la the light it throws upon the pre
ceding markets. The day's reaction with
entirely lack of any change In ncwa made
pictty conclusive evidence of the profes
sional character of the upward movement.
The demand for stocks in the loan depart
ment of the Stock Exchange waa not more
than nominal today, Indicating the large
reduction In the outstanding short Interest.
Tha conclusion was accepted as reasonable,
therefore, that yesterday a 1.000,000 shares
mark was du to the combined efforts ot
the retreat of a considerable ahort Interest
driven to cover by last week'e advance In
prleea and to the taking of pronta by th
party of professional speculators which had
conducted the operatlona for the advance.
A email Increment from the outside de
mand caused by the apurt In prleea facili
tated the movement to take profits. The
Joint effect waa an extensive closing up of
consequence t outstanding speculstlve contracts, so that
inq i i nr. i i iviibj w n o irn virni .v. uv-
ventures. The hesitating disposition as to
the direction to be taken by the new com
mitments was responsible for the wavering
of prices and the shrinkage In th volume
of business.
The check to the advance in view of tha
further easing of the money market rats
waa a disappointment, to that speculative
sentiment which had held the conviction
firmly that money stringency was tha only
thing that would restrain a rise in prices
of stocks as a result of the great activity
and prosperity In all branchea of business
arraira. Tne fact that yesterday a eariy
advances had carried the average level
of prices to the highest of the year and. In
rait, to the highest record prices as a
whole, was a eubjeet of comment and
doubtless an occasion for pause. The low
grade of some of the securities which were
being rushed forward Into promlnonce waa
aiso a sunject ror grave questioning, it
Is the experience of speculative markets
that the stirring up of such securities as a
class la resorted to only because the pos
sibilities for advance in stocks of mors
substantial value have been exhausted.
The result of tha profit taking today In
aome of the recently revived stocks was
fairly ludicrous. They have been bought
quite Indiscriminately for several days on
the bare chance that speculative favor
would turn to them. Any appreciable
movement offer a handsome proportion of
profits where the entire purchase price 1
so small. An example la Standard Rope
and Twine, for which a audden demand
yesterday carried the price up to $2 a
ahare on a par value of tlOO. On a move
ment to take profits today the shares fell
to si.
Belling for London account was quite a
factor in the day's weakness, and the ap-
proacn or a Stock Ktchange settlement
there waa held to explain the selling. There
were small chaneas in tha money market
but considernhle Importance was attached
to the nunllshed statement from tne presl
dent of the Imnerlsl Rank of Germany
expressing satisfaction with the Interna
tlonai money situation . Rut there was no
cessation today In the firmness of the for
eign exchange market here, and the au
thorltles allowed themselvee an Intimation
that a possible gold export was a not re
mote contingency. New York exchange at
Chicago also fell Viack to rar. The sub-
treasury continues to vleld cash to the
banks and the money market was called
easy. The special points of strength In
today a stock market were . without ex
planation and were believed to be attributa
ble to operators' tactics for the purpose of
sustaining the market naralnst the realis
ing In nrogresa. The hard and aift coaler
were the conspicuous examples of such
stocks. Tfcl sustaining Influence waa ef
fective In limiting the declines and rcstorlns;

CATTLE RecelDts this morning
moderately large, there being almost 400
car reported in the yards. At Chicago
there waa a moderate run, while at Kansas
City there was a fairly large run for a
Tussdv. There was a steady .market at
Tuesday. There was a steady market at
Kansas city. -As
haa been the case for the past few
days, trains were late again and tha cattle
were slow in getting to tne yaras. iouay,
however, trains were abnormally alow in
getting in.. Even at 10 o'clock there was
only a very email supply at nana reauy
for th buyers.
There did not appear to ne any great
number of fat cattle in ths yards, either
natives or westerns. The supply of oorn
feds was limited to a few loads. There was
a fair supply of western steers, but there
waa quite a sprinkling of the medium
grades. Owing to the rather large run of
the common kinaa or came ana me nmiim
supply of choice atult the buyera wer
giving prices that were steady to eaaier
as compared with those of yesterday on
the better grades, while the medium and
common stuff waa inclined to go at prices
a little lower. But, taken as a whole, tha
market In general Was Just about steady,
with a tendency toward lower prices.
Th supply of cows and neirera was
fairly large, but for aome reason there did
not appear to be much of a demand for the
kind of atuff which waa on the market,
with the result that co a and heifera were
not aa strong as yesterday on the common
general run of stuff. The better grade of
atuff went at prices that were almost
steady with yesterday, with others lower.
The market on cowa and heifera was In
very much the same condition as that on
beef steers.
There waa a good supply of feeders and
the demand for them was not very active.
Speculators had a lot of reedera in tne
lower division, which they have held over
from yesterday, and tney am not teei iiki
loading. up with many more. Feeders on
the general run of stuff were eaaier. wtille
on th better and more choice grades the
prices wer steady with thoas of yesterday.

SHEEf RecalDta thla mornlna were Quits
large fur a Tuesday and were considerably
larger than a week ago and also a bigger
run than waa received a year ago. Tnere
was a large run yesterday and a number of
the trains were late In getting in so that
there waa a considerable number of sheep,
principally feeders, left over until this
morUng, when they were gradually cleaned
out whue waiting lor today a atuft to get In
nape ror selling.
Thla murnlna buyers' Urere still hungry
for fat sheep and lambs and the market
on anything that would do for the packers
waa ateady to strong and active. Packera
weie on watch for anything suitable for
their purposes and this served to keep the
maraei on rat aturr steady, un the more
choice sheep they were paying prices that
were a trifle atronger than yesterday.
The market on good klnda ot feeders
yesterday was Just about ateady and waa
inclines to be a little easier on the com
mou light lamba. A lot of choice yearling
feeders brought 16.60, about as high aa
haa been paid this year. This morning
there waa a fair gathering of country and
feeder buyers on hand when the market
opened and prices on desirable kinds of
feeder sheep and lambs remained Just about
steady, but there was an Inclination to
neglect the common light lambs, and hence
tne reeling on them waa Just a llttie eaaier.
Then, too, there waa a good supply on the
market of tha common kind of feeders,
while the better kinds were a little scarce.
In other words, good feeders were steady,
while the common stuff was a lltto easier.

HOGS Early estimates of hog receipts
were not very large, but trains came In
heavily loaded and receipts kepi piling up
until then were not far from 100 rata on
sale. Fortunately the hog trains arrived
In fairly good season, which could nut be
said of those bringing In any other kind
of Block today.
The market was alow In opening, and It
was iathr lale In fori buyers and sellers
wire ready to do bus'nees, but when it
was once under way the trade waa fairly
active. Price generally were 2'k' lowr
than yesterdiiy. Thai means thai a very
large pro(orttnn 'of the receipts rliaiiKd
