SALES NEARLY ONE MILLION SHARES Low Grade Industrials and High Priced Rallroa4 Shares Are Bid r by Speea-lators. NEW YORK. Oct 20 Dealings In stocks expanded today and the market broadened out Into greater animation and Strength then for a long time past, the sales for the day rising to a total of 830, .00 shares. The demonstration, which wss In the nature of the celebration of the distinct relaxation of money conditions, was to a large extent In the riands of the professional element. Commission houses continued to complain of small business. The celebration took on a rather riotous form during the progress of a series of skvrocket movements In a miscellaneous assortment of specialties, many af which do not appear on the tape for months at a time. Practically every stock of the class lloted on the exchange was brought into the movement at one time or another. But this did not discourage the continued atten tion to a clsss of gilt-edge and high-priced railroad stocks, owing to the great facility with which wide price movements can be produced in these stocks, of which the floating market supply is always very small. The consequence Is that prices may be bid up In suchlcsses by point" or even by 8 and 10-point IrTtervals without bringing any offerings, where an advance of 44 or H In an active market leader would necessi tate the absorption of thousands of shares In order to hold the advance. The rather Incongruous spectacle was presented, there fore, of coincident movements In Standard Rope and Twine, Vulcan Detlnnlng, Ameri can Grass Twine, American Hide & Leather and stocks of a like class valued from 81 to 810 a share, and In high-priced railroad stocks, selling at from $200 to over 8400 a hre while the hnrtv of the list of stand ard railroad stocks remained comparatively Impassive, The usually active railroad stocks averaged a gain of about a point, however, the advance occurring mostly after the movement In the specialties had proceeded for some time and being prompted apparently bv a realization on the part of the conductors of the movement, of the inoongruity of the hardness of the standard stocks. The close attention to the money situation was evident in the prompt response In the market to publication of the preliminary estimate of the week's currency movement, which was quickly followed by the great spurt of activity for the day. The figures pointed to a small addition on account of the regular express movement with the interior to the large gain of cash by the banks yielded by the sub-treasury opera tions which had contributed to tha banks up to Thursday evening 84.867,000. The addi tion to the regular currency movement promised to bring the total gain in cash up to aoout to.uw.uuo. uiecuunie wnv shared at all three of the great money furd, exclusive of the 8lW.ooo.no gnld re serve, shows: Available cash bslanoe, 81W 41J.978I gnld eiMn and bullion, t7S,8l'8,767; gold certificates, 843,672, 700. Tt was after 10 o'clock before the rallroids delivered anything of consequence, so that the most of the forenoon was put in wait ing for the arrival of stock. There were only a few over sixty cars all told, making the run for the day about on an average with previous Fridays. With such light receipts the supply of beef steers was very moderate, as might be expected, and there was not enough of any one kind on sale to make very mucfT of a market or create very much Interest Buyers, however, evidently wanted more cattle, as they were all In the saddle early and complaining about the slowness of the railroads In -delivering the stock to the yards. When the cattle finally out in an appearance the most of them sold in very fair season at prices that were just about steady with yesterday. BOSTON, Mass., Oct. 20 WOOL The Commercial Bulletin will say tomorrow of the wool market: The position of the 1 Australian and South American markets j has strengthened prices here. The woolen and dress goods mills have become more 89V4 1 active during the last week and thev have 178 179 taken substantial amounts of greasy and n jtjti scourea wooia. A very gooa movement in 80 scoured is reported and sales of grease 37 j territory have been generally confined to 82 1 small amounts, although the aggregate has 28 1 footed up to a substantial volume. Call 67 1 fornla, Texas and Nevada wools are lit a 26 1 little better demand owing to the activity 62 of the woolen mills. A fair business In three-eighths and half-blood fleeces has been done, and delaine has shown some Improvement. Pulled wools have been 79 37 152 152 25 126 84 24 week and prices have gradually tended up ward. As usual toward the close of the week there was no very great demand for stock ers and feeders, but as the supply was far from largo holders generally were able to unload at yesterday's prices. This means that anything desirable was steady, with inferior grades a little slow. Representative sales: COWS. Ho. At. Fr. No. At. The hogs sold f;enerally at prices that were steady to a ittle stronger and the most of them ehansred hands In very good season, that Is. j as many of them as were received In tSe morning, rieavy nogs so in an inn wav from $5 to $5.20, while the best lightweights only rearhed $5.26. This would prove that at the present time weight does not cut ss much figure as quality, the good loads of both heavy, light and medium weights sell ing in very nearly the same notches. The tendency of the market for two days now has been upward, due apparently to the demand being somewhat In excess of the receipts. The general conditions gov erning the trade, though, have not changed materially. Just at present th trade Is tinder the Influence of the shipping demand at th different market points and that means stronger prices. With the packers in control lower prices would almost certainly result. Repfesentatlve sales: ... 3 ...U I , 14 a ..171 At. 6a. Pr. ,.04 ... i 00 .104 80 I OS ..177 ... 6 ie .301 ...
