scribed issue of city bonds of the City of

CHICAGO, Oct 18. The price of ahoea In
Chicago will be higher within the next
fortnight than has been known In the last
forty years ln ready and custom-mado
goods. Already the Jobbing price has ad
vanced 60 centa on the pair and the retail
price la expected to feel the change ln cost
immediately. There la a scarcity of hides)
and the local dealers as well as the buyer
of the east have become alarmed over the
shortage. So material haa been the effect
of the ahortage that the coat of tanned
hides has gone up 80 per cent since Sep
tember 1.
In last Sunday's market newa The Beo
predicted much higher prices for shoes.
J. H. Burger, president of the Allentown
Shoe Manufacturing- company, was In the
city last Friday. He made the statement
that shoes would advance 26 per cent In
the next three or four months and there
was bound to be a big advance at once.
"The reason for the threatened advance
la that the tannera are only now waking up
to the fact that they cannot get hldea at
any price," aald H. G. Ilarte, vice presi
dent of the Regent Shoe Manufacturing
company. "They pay 14 to U cents for
cow hides and as high as 16 cents for
steer hldea, and they are not to be had at
that. The packera have control of moat of
the limited aupply and they are not going
to be ln a hurry to let go of It. Shoea
are already 26 per cent higher than they
were a year ago. We now pay 20 centa
a pound for leather which we bought a
year ago for 14 cents. Hldea which for
merly brought the farmer 7 centa are now
bringing 14 to 16 centa."
Several advances have already been
made thla fall on heavy grade shoea by
the Omaha Jobbera. No changea have
been announced this week.
