Prlees on Board of Trade,
CmCAOO. Oct. 17 Revived reports of a
partial grain famine In Russia were mainly
responsible today for strength In the wheat
nisrket here. At the close wheat for De
cember delivery was up ti7to. Corn show

visions are I'.iJDV lower.
The wheat market opened Arm. with De
cember unchanged to vc higher at 86TisSe.
Wet weather In thn United States Imparted
some firmness to the situation, but the far
tor of apparently greatest Importance was
a cablegram fmm Odessa to a well known
concern here. The tone of the message was
rierhleilly bullish, the Russian government
being reported na buying wheat for the re
lief of the famine sufferers. It was also
claimed that shipments from Russia are de
creasing. This Information seemed to rome
snorts to activity. Throughout the entire
day. demand from shorts constituted the
chief source of buying orders In the pit. Of
ferings were comparatively small. Cons-
auently prices uninterruptedly advanced,
trength of cash wheat at Minneapolis wns
a factor contributing to the upturn here.
For Decmler the highest point of the dnv
was reached at 8c. The market closed
strong, with December at ft'aHHV. Clear
ances of wheat and flour were equal to 125
friO bushels. The visible supply Increased
2.852.000 bushels. Primary receipts were
1.3n.0n0 bushels, compared with 1.3I9.000
bushels a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth
and Chicago reported receipts of 998 cars,
against SXjo cars last week and 1.168 a year
ago.
Wet weather In the west was the main
reason for firmness In the corn market.
Strength of wheat was a factor of lesser
Importance. Bhorts were fairly active buy
ers throughout the entire session. The mar

Decreased receipts and wet weather had a
bullish effect on the oats market. A prom
inent commission hoUss was the chief buver.
December opened a shade higher at 2!V,
advanced to 28o and closed at the top.
Local receipts were 407 cars.
Liquidation of October lard and ribs had a
weakening Influence on the provision mar

of Be In the price of live hogs. At the close

NEW YORK. Oct. 17.-An Increased sup
ply of loanable funds which appeared in the
call losn money market this morning
stnrted the professional operators to buying
stocks. The rate for call loans recovered
Inter In the day and stocks bought egrliel
were sold out. The result was a consider
able Increase In the activity In the market
over that of yesterday and on several pre
ceding days.
The day's market forced the opinion thst
large waiting speculation Is restrained from
entering the market only by the exigencies
of the money situation. The large supply
of funds early In the day at B per cent wns
offered by bankers closely connected with
the flotation of the Japanese loan. This led
to the inference that the proceeds of the
subscriptions paid on Monday were being
replaced in the money market, wnen inis
supply had been absorbed rates rose sgaln
to near the prevailing rate of yesterday.
Berlin exchange rose vigorously and the
supposition that preparations for remittance
of Japanese funds were a factor in the ex
change market caused a feeling of distrust
of the easing effect caused by the placing
of these funds in call loans which presum
ably would be only temporary. Keports
were current also of maturities railing one
on very large sterling loans which had to
be covered In the exchange market.
Cotton and grain bills continued scarce In
the mnrket, so that this extra demand Is
effective In running up the rate toward the
gold export point. Gold was marked tip
further In the London market and the open
market discount rate there rose fairly
above the bank rate. Sterling exchange re
covered a fraction at Paris, but continued
downward at Berlin, the discount rate at
the latter point, however, yielding a shade.
Heavy retrenchment was shown by the
Imperial Bank of Germany's weekly state
ment. Rates for time money In New York
were strong and the bid for six-day losns
was advanced to i per cent with tb ask
ing rate at fi4 per cent. There were no
further transfers of currency to the south
through the subtreasury. while from San
Francisco there were additional large re
ceipts through that Institution. There was
some speculative discussion of the proba
bility of the Interior demand for currency
having been satisfied, but this view did not
receive much countenance In banking
circles. During the upward movement of
prices the coalers continued conspicuous
and the high-priced members of the group
made new high record prices. Beyond the
general prosperity In that Industry there
was no news to explain the movement,
which was attributed largely to speculative
orotations. The meeting being held in this
cltv of organisations In the steel trade to
consider ndvances In the prices of different
lines of finished products gave a firm tone
tn the teel Industrials. The Renubllc Steel
stocks were helped In addition by gossip
regarding the probable dividend action at
tomorrow's meeting. The announcement of
the entrv of United States Steel and Gen
eral Electric Interests Into the American
Iyoconiotlve directorate was taken to ex
plain the previous advance In that stock.

Foreign Financial.
LONDON. Oct. 17. Money was In good
demand In the market today. Discounts
were firm. Despite the Bank of Kngland
raising the price of gold French comne
itlon continues. It Is understood that the
Bank of Kngland has received considerable
sums of gold, a continuation of which
policy will enable It to meet the require
ments of Egypt and elsewhere. There was
renewed talk today of the Bank of Eng
land's discount rate being raised to 5
per cent, but this not generally anticipated
his week. Trading on the stock ex
change was dull. Irregular and nervous
owing to 'he prevailing uncertainty re
garding the monetary outlook which de
pressed gilt-edged securities. The tendency
was undecided and business was narrow,
Consols were weak, but closed with a
better tone. Home rails were Irregular
Americans opened firm and mostly over
parity on New York support. Business was
moderate and the movements were slight.
Prices closed steady at below the best
quotations. Foreigners were sluggish. Pe
ruvlans were orrered. Russians and Japa
nese were easier. Japanese imperial 6s
of 1904 were quoted at I01V.
BERLIN, Oct 17. Prices on the Bourse
today were still depressed owing to the
high rates asked for money.
PARIS, Oct. 17. Prices on the Bourse to
day were Irregular, showing the effect of
the foreign monetary tension. At the close
stocks were heavy. Russian imperial 4a
were quoted at 93.30 and Russian bonds of
1904 at 628.

larger than a week ago, were smuil, barely

all, the trains were very late and buyers
and sellers were forced to put In a good
snare of the forcnon waitina: for th or
rival of trains that ought to have been In
and unloaded by daylight. For a few days
trains have been making better time and
the market lias been in better shape. &s
nothing contributes more to the making
of a dull and unsatisfactory market than
the late arrival of stock.
This morning buyers were still hungry
for fat sheen and lamhs and the market
on anything that would do for the packers
was sironser and active. Packeis were
on the watch for everything suitable for
their purposes and they snapped U up on
arrival. As high as 35.16 was paid for
wethers and ewes and a few 2-year-old
wethers sold as high ns fo..r0.
Tho market on land kinds of feeders
yesterday was Just about steady, but it
closed off a little easier on the common
light lambs. This morning tliere was
fair showing of feeder buyers in the barn
and nrlces on the desirable kinds of both
sheep and lambs remained Just about
steady, but there was somo Inclination 10
neglect the common light lambs, and hence
the teellng on them was easier. The fact

CATTLE Receipts were small at this
point for a Tuesday, only a few over 2i
cars being reported In the yards, as against
816 cars a week ago and 403 cars two weeks
ago. On the other nana. Chicago reportea
an exceptionally large run for a Tuesday
and a lower market. While the light re
ceipts here would naturally tend to the
making of a higher market, the large re
ceipts and lower Chicago market to a cer
tain extent nsutranxea ineir eueci.
There did net appear to De any great
number of fat cattle In the yards, either
natives or westerns. The supply of corn
fed beef was limited largely to a few scat
tering loads of warmed-up cattle. Oood
western steers were also In small supply,
but there was quite a sprinkling of the
medium kinds. While buyers were point
ing to the lower market at Chicago and the
big run there and generally bidding lower
prices at the start, salesmen were noiaing
on Bood and hard, with the result that
prices were generally well maintained. In
other words, the market was Just about
steady with yesterday on the desirable
kinds at least.. Owing to the late arrival
of many of the trains the trade was very
much delayed and It was late before a
Clearance was effected.
When the market openea mo supply or
cows and heifers was very smaii, mere
being hardly enough in signt to go ine
rounds among the buyers. The result was
that the market was Just about steady In
spite of the unfavorable advices from east
ern points. The feeling was general, how
ever, that with anything like a large run
here prices would nave easea on 111 sym
pathy with Chicago.
