CURRENT LITERATURE.
"Flnkey rerklns; Just a Boy," by Cap
tain Ilsrold Hammond. U. B. A. It may be
that lads who read Captain Harold Ham
mond's story of "Flnkey rerklns: Jtist a
Boy" will gain Ideas for new pranks, but
they will make acquaintances with a whole
some and genuln boy, a boy overflowing
with fun ami mischief, yet never forgetting
nor transgressing certain sturdy Ideas of
honor, which counted anything mean or
dishonest Impossible. Plnkey'g adventures
are Just those of a healthy, happy, lively
boy of village environment, but the telling
Is evidently the work of a man who has
not traveled far, In heart, from his own
youthful days--one reason, perhaps, why
fathers and big brothers will chuckle over
Plnkey and keep oir resdlng, once they pick
the book up.
In his new book, "The Quakeress," Just
pub'lahed by the John C. Winston company
of Philadelphia. Charles Heber Clark (Mas
Adler) has mads curious and Interesting
departure from the lines upon which he has
done his preceding literary work. He has
undertaken to present a picture of phases
of life among the Pennsylvania friends
a', mint Interesting people, of whom not
enougli Is known by Americans beyond the
middle states. The book contslns a particularly-
Intense love story, which moves
forward, with continuously Increasing In
terest, to most Impressive conclusions.
There are but four Quakers In the book,
the other characters of which there are
not more than four or five, representing
"the world's people," who are Involved,
by the Incidents of the tale, with the mem
bers of the socletj'. The author has been
especially fortunate In his delineation of
these persons, some of whom are lovable
and some amusing. For the book, al
though having upon the whole rather a
serious cast, contains, as might have been
expected, not a little original and refined
humor. George Glbhs, the well known
artist, and himself an author ft no mean
powers, has contributed four remarkable
color Illustrations to the volume. The
book appears In an attractive cover of
Quaker grey, showing In an inlay the sweeJ
face of the heroine with her Quaker bon.
net.
t
"The Gift of the Morning 8tar," by
Armlstead C. Gordon, Is a story of Dunkcr
life and character, yet it Is a far broader
study than tf the Dunkers. They are types
of a spirit which finds expression in many
sects and unattached individuals. The
story tella of Inward struggle, and the
plot Is constructed on strong lines. It has
originality,' tenderness, and power. The
hero recognises an Inherited weakness of
character and overcomes it "He that over
cometh, I will give him the morning star."
Published by Funk & W agnails.
'The Human Touch," Is a tale of the
great southwest, by Edith M. Nlcholl (Mrs.
Edith M. Nlcholl Bowyer), Illustrated by
Charles Copeland. The scene of "The Hu
man Touoh" shifts at an early period from
New York to the ranch of the cattle king
hero In the wilds of New Mexico, whither
he takes as his bride the delicately reared
young woman whom affinity has drawn to
him with the Irresistible "human touch"
that Is forever bringing together men and
women of strong natures regardless of
circumstances. The unexpected opening of
a chapter In the life of the hero that was
. thought to be closed forms the main plot
of the story, but Its Interest largely centers
In the stirring events connected with life
In the new country. The vigorous and
finally successful efforts of an honest man
to hold his own against lawlessness and
corruption favored by desperate conditions
are strikingly portrayed. The Incidental
philosophy of the book Is powerful and the
humor rich and original. . It Is a story with
good red blood in It and. will satisfy the
reader. Published by the Lothrop Pub
lishing company..
Frances Ay mar Mathews, author of "My
Lady Peggy Goes To Town," has written
a sprightly and most eptertainlng story In
"The Marquls's Millions." It tells of an
American girl and her .French n la nee and
the curious Intrigue by which they seek
to gain possession of the millions belong
ing to her rich aunts. The money would
Come to the girl, -as sole heir were It not
for the ' fanatical loyalty bf the two old
ladles to the royal house of Louis and
their determination to leave-all their wealth
to the Nineteenth Louis,", whom they are
confidently expecting. The plot Is sparkling
and decidedly- original, and the situations
are well developed, with many touches of
humor. Published by Funk & Wagnalls.
With Its Introduction of color through
the fashion and advertising sections, the
November' Pelineator presents a most at
tractive appearance. The Autumn fashions
have a large place In the number, being
UlustraUd and described In detail and In
terpreted -by such authorities of Cress as
Helen Borkeley-Loyd and Ktlouard
Fontaine.
The table of contents contains, among Its
many features of Interest, an article, the
second of two, by Dr. . William H. Max
well, superintendent of schools, New York
City, on "Education for Life through Liv
lug." As Dr. Maxwell, says, "The public
schools of today are doing what they can
to enable the children to become better
home-makers and greater home-lovers, to
be stronger In body and more l'iady In
application of mind, to problems both of
the hand and head and to discover In
themselves new aptitudes and gain new
modes of self-expression without which,
for want of verbal skill, they would be
forever dumb." Just what methods they
use are set forth with a great deal of In
terest In this article.
The campaign for' pure foods which the
magazine Instituted some months a&o is
carried on In this number with an Investiga
tion of official nillk Inspection. Mrs. Abel
asserts that sanitary Inspection Is a farce,
and makes a strong plea for rigid enforce
ment of the law.
"A Hun In Ireland" Is a delightful travel
sketch by Seumas MacManus. the well
known Irish author. N. Hudson Moore
writes of "Tables and Sideboards" In "The
Collector's Manual." and the "Child's
Dress" is the subject of Dr. Grace Peck
ham Murray's paper. "The Romance of a
Gospel Singer" is a timely contribution,
describing some Interesting events in the
life of Charles M. Alexander, the revival
ist. The Lucky Piece, Albert Blgelow
Patne's novel, which has been running In
the magatlne. Is brought to an end In this
number and at "Spinster Farm," by
Heiea M. Wlnslow is continued. A de
lightful story of boy life, "The Exaltation
of William Henry" Is from the pen of
- Hermlnie Templeton. There is a great deal
of Interest and value to housewives In the

"The Outlet" Is another book by Andy
Adams, whose books on the life of the true
cowboy have won unstinted praise, both as
accurate pictures and as good fiction. It
describes the struggle of the cattlemen to
find a market for the enormous herds that
had been accumulating In the vast grazing
lunds of Texas during and after the cirll
war.
That Interesting cowpuncher, Tom Quirk,
now In the employ of Don Lojell, has
charge of the exciting drive from Texas to
Fort Buford. on a government beef con
tract, the account of which reads more like
a novel than an account of daily work.
There Is more action and less minute de
scription of detail, so that It is even more
entertaining than "The Log of a Cowboy,"
while just as circumstantial and veracious
In its picture of the .drive. Any one who
loves men with the bark on wtll enjoy
reading Mr. Adams' descriptions of tha
tricks of the trade, the loyalty of man to
man and the good fighting qualities which
are pitted against treachery and sharp prac
tices in this life on tha plains.
The spirited Illustrations by E. Boyd
Smith are as successful as those. In the two
previous books by Mr. Adams. Houghton,
Mifftn ar Co. are the publishers.
"Constance, Treacut." by Dr.- 8 Weir
Mitchell. Is a novel that most readers will
cling to till tha last page and find haunting
memory long after It Is laid down. On
feels that only Dr. Mitchell could have
written this book. The tragedy, for it is a
tragedy, Is aet Just after the civil war in a
small southern city qtlll seething with the
prejudices, misconceptions and passions of
the mighty conflict - between the states.
George Trescot, Constance, Grayhurst and
all the minor characters are sharply drawn,
but George Trescot stands out as a rarely
lovable man, Constance Trescot as a strong
individual and impressive figure. To the
development of her character Dr. Mitchell
has brought the sympathy of a poet and
the Insight of a philosopher and of a "wise
physician." a physician of the mind no less
than of the body.
To give even a hint of the development
of the plot would be unfafr to the reader.
but the main fact is based upon a woman's
vendetta that actually came under Dr
Mitchell's observation. To the making of
the book he has given much thought and
labor, having rewritten the tale three times
In the last three years. Dr. Mitchell con
siders "Constance Trescot" ths best work
he has achieved. Published by the Century
company.
"Minerva's Maneuvers," by Charles Bat
tell Loomls (A. 8. Barnes A Co.. New
York) Is a summer story which Is full of
humor and lightness, attractive when the
hammock rocks In tha wind. Tha beauties
of a New England summer are given off
rather than set forth, and there Is en ex
cellent opportunity for a sequel, which
should tell of the hills under the snow.
