HABITUAL OfERATOnS BECOME CAUTIOUS There Is l.lttla Presaara ta Bell oa Aevaaat af CalllaB; of lesst sal Everyhody is Waltlag. NEW TORK, Oct. 1 -The spirit of en terprise wss prantianlly dormant In the stock market today and tha amount of buslnesa done was InstgrrlAcant. Habitual operators In stocks find no encouragement to take part In the market In the face of the admonitory attitude of bankers ant' Influential capitalists and the cautionary tone of public comment on tha situation. On the other hand there la no obvious pres sure ot stocks In the market seeking liquidation and professional operatora for this .reason refrain from attacks on the market In attempts to get prices lower. Today's Immediate developmenta were cal culated to Inspire respect for the conserva tive attitude maintained by great Inter ests toward the market. There was no flurry -In tha money mar ket and no active recall of credits calcu lated to force stocks on the market, but the tendency of quotations for money waa clearly enough upwards In all the great money centers and no new source of re lief for the money pressure waa uncov ered. Apprehensions that the final ar rangements for the payment of the Japa nese loan subscriptions would disturb the local money market proved unfounded and apparently tha payments on that account were quickly rede posited and made their reappearance in th money market. The foreign exchange market was notably strong today and this prompted an Infer ence that preparations were already mak ing for remittances of the Japanese funds. The supply of bills for exchange also comes from former borrowers of foreign funds, who calculated upon a supply of exchange at thla time td buy bills at a profit for repayment or tneir loans, 'inis course 01 events has led to tha definite abandonment of the hope of securing any additional gold for New Tork In the Immediate fu ture and It Is generally believed that no further supplies are likely to be secured for the rest of tha year. It Is plain that the Bank of England has secured definite control of the London money market, and London expects an advance In the bank rate of discount on Thursday. Rates for money wera reported htahur In Chicago to day, but New Tork exchange at that point holds at a email premium. New Orleans, however, Is making large requisitions on New York, the transfers of currency to that point through the subtreaaury for Saturday and today having amounted to 11,470.000. Borne small disturbance of bank ing sentiment was reported In that city last week, but this heavy demand Is at tributed to the resrular needs of the cot ton movement, now reachlnic Its flood. The report of the closing of a Cleveland bank ing Institution created a bad Impression, although It had little effect. The Inelas ticity or the market was a conspicuous feature and the small early declines were rather more than recovered on the dull absorption of the day. The special firm ness of the coalers was due to the con sideration of last week's purchase of the Coxe Bros.' property. The market closed firm but semi-stagnant. Bonds were lrrecular. Total saiaa. par value, 12,750,000. TTnlted States bonds were unchanged on call. Quotntlons ranged as follows on ins new York Stock exchange: . Haies.tiign.ix)w.ne. It was in fact the largest run for a Mon day so far this year. Large receipts were also reported at Chicago, Kansas City and Other market points. As a result of the largs runs there was a lower tendency to prices at all markets. i With a plentiful supply of beef steers and with other selling points reporting de clines of 10c generally buyers here were disposed to take their time In making selec tions. The result waa that the forenoon was well advanced before any business of consequence was transacted. When the trade did open It was on the basis of about a 10c decline on the general run ot the cattle. Some of the most desirable lots that just happened to meet requirements may not have been quite that in urn off In all cases, but the exceptions were not numerous. Cows and heifers suffered about the same decline as beeves and were on an averaa-a about 10c lower than the close of last week. The trade was slow and late In getting started, so that it was after mtoaay Darore a eieiiranuv who ent?iiieu. S lookers and feeders fared better than other kinds of cattle. Speculators had a good week last week and they were en abled to clean up their purchases on a sat isfactory basis. As they were generally anticipating another good week they were out early this morning and In spite of the large run bought the desirable kinds of feeders at steady prices.- The trade was fairly active, so that the most of the good kinds changed hands In very fair season. Common and Inferior grades did not move so freely and on account of the number of good grades on sale were generally neg lected, closing lower. Representative sales aPbaEir.D 1 CaSrtS. Fat sheep were soar-e and at the same time the demand was active. Packers hav ing been short of sheep all last week, were hungry for supplies sort they t-t all out In the barn at an earlr hour this morning. The market opened active and stronger on everything desirable. While lambs wero more plentiful than sheep they, too. wero good sellers at strong prlres. Yearling wethers sold up to 85.50. with "anse '. at 84.76 and lambs at 17. CO. As usual on a Monday morning there were not so very many country buyers In the barn, but local buyers had plenty of orders In hand, so that the feeder market waa well supported. It opened as soon as the sheep were In the barn ready to lie shown snd the trade was fairly active at fully stesdy prices.
