CHICAGO. Oct. It-Clear weather In the northwest had a bearish Influence today on the wheat market here. The effect, how ever, was largely neutralised hy drouth rumors from Australia. At the close wheat for December delivery waa off So. Corn Is down ,,. Oats and proviaiona are prac tically unchanged. The wheat market opened easy, with the Jm,cS. r P,.lon unchanged to Ho lower at Wj4H6Sc. Almost the sole factor of bear ish tenor was the absence of rain In the northwest. With brlgbt aklea In that sec tion the movement of the new crop, which on account of wet weather has fallen o(T considerably durtne- the neat f riava la expected to again assume large proportions. An advance In the prlc of wheat at Uver T1.. had. PP"rently little effect on the market here early In the aeaalon. During the first "."L Prominent commission house made offerlnga on a decidedly liberal seal. Under the combined pressure the price of Decem ber declined to 8S'n. On covering by shorts, however, the market later regained tem porarily all of the loss. The rally carried the price of December up to 8rj, iS6Hc. Prices, however, soon reacted again, the close being easy, with December at M "He. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 124,600 bushels. NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS lUrkit 0pe.ni Lower on Largi Tolima of Liquidating laUi, SLIGHT RALLY ON PROFIT-TAKING Later Velars Are Irregalar wltk Ad- I assies Maalaala . by SpralatlT Pla. NEW TORK. Oct. U.-Btocks In rurther speculative liquidation came upon the mar ket In large volume this morning under the continued Influence of th same factors which started the decline yesterday. The Ixindon stock market seemed equally Im pressed with New York ovar the significa tion of th opinion expressed before the bankers' convention by Mr. Vanderllp, vice president of the National City bank. Lower prices for Americans were established there and Indon began to sell stocks here aa soon aa the market opened. letter the New York market became Irregular, with occa sional recovetiea. But the principal ac tivity waa while prices wera declining. The recoveries were due In large part to the taking of profits by bearish tradera who had sold abort earlier end there wa no revival of active operation for an advance, except In the case of a few stocks which are In the hands of speculative pools. When the money rat opened at ( per cent and fears began to M felt that It would rise above that practically unlimited amounts were offered at that rate by the National City bank. It was Inferred from this that a corrective was deslgnsd, for the Impression created In speculative circles ny ine paragrapns in ute panaer s soar, which were made most of in the market yesterday. Speculative opinion waa in clined to take the ground that while a warning against speculative excess was In tended, there waa no desire to convey a distrust of the present level of prices. The motives lor me traning seemea to navo been largely Inferential. The large arrivals of cold, amounting to t2.650.0u0. were con signed to the bank which made the principal loans on the Stock exchange. I lie time money market was called very firm and It was reported that lenders were Inclined to scrutinize more closely as collateral some of the industrial securities In which there have been recent active speculative move ments. The retention of the Bank of Eng land rate waa coupled with the expressed opinion from London that an advance may be necessary later. The heavy repayments to the bank for the week dlacloaed by the weekly atatement. th continued decline In the bullion reserve, a further rise in dis counts In the open market, both In London, Paris and Berlin, and a turn in the conti nental exchanges against London were all Incidents showing the continued pressure of the London market. Foreign exchange rates were well held here In spite of the rise In money rates, New York exchange at Chicago, however, rose to 10c premium. The special movement In Chicago Termi nal stocks was due to a report of Hill control. Wisconsin Central was still strong under the influence of yesterday' reports of an Krle project In that property. The day's net changes were mostly unimport ant. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value, 82.30,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on call. The supply ot peer was very email mis morning, mere Deing very lew vorn-ieu steers and not many western that would do for killers. As there was a fair demand buyers were in the sanaie eariy in ine morning and rode quite lively so long as tha meager supply lasted. In addition to being active the market was stronger, aome would aay aa much aa'lOc higher In spots. Corn-fed steers of good quality sold up as high as 15.75, the top price paid at this point in several aays. There was quite a sprinkling or cows and heifers in the yards this morning, al though mostly In small bunches. There was about the usual demand and aa buyera seemed to fear that there were hardly enough to go the rounds they were out early and the most of tne offerlnga changed hands in good season. Anything desirable seemed to sell quite readily at prlcea that were strong to 10c higher than yesterday. Quite a good many of the 100 cara were feeders. Desirable kinds were steady and fairly active and the yards were cleared of that kind In good season In the morning. As usual on a Thursday when speculators begin to figure on the end of the week the common and medium kinds did not sell any too freely and were generally weak and slow. There waa a fair de mand for anything answering to that de scription and the supply waa mostly taken In good season. Some of the best of the heavier loads sold early at prices that looked a little better, but as a rule the market wus only steady on heavy and mixed loads and It wound up slow and weaker as usual. Quality seemed to cut more figure than on a good many day a. buyera being after the good loa.de. while they did nut pay so much attention to weights. After a few of ths more urgent orders were filled the market slowed up snd con tinued very dull until tha close. The very fact that the market closes so dull and weak every day snows very clearly the weakness underlying the trade. Packers evidently have no confidence In the future of the market and they only buy each day what they are compelled to In order 10 meet current demands for meats and If there la nothing left It la bound to sell lower, yesterday th average of all the 1 sales waa under since March 17. For the week ao far the re ceipts foot up only 184 cars, ss against 286 cars for the same days last week. In othor words, the receipts for the first four day thla week are short about 100 cars. Condition governing tha trade thla morn ing were the same aa detailed yesterday. The market Is still under the Influence of very strong buying demand, which makes Itself more sharply felt than would be the case ir tne receipts were larger. The re sult of this condition of affairs this week has been to alva valuea an unward ten dency. Packers are evidently exDerlencIn some difficulty at this point in securing sufficient iai sneep end lambs to nil their require ments, ss nearly everything coming Is on the feeder order. Yesterday morning and again this morning they wer out early And it did not tske them very long to clnan up everything that would do for killers at good, Strong prices, tjood, fat lamna sold up to 17.00, which waa the top yeaterday, and ewea which had been on feed a short time brought 14.76. The feeder market was also good and strong and falrlv active, so that the most of the arrival changed hands In very good aeaaon. From atart to finish the market waa entirely eatlsfactory to owners.
