LARGE DECREASE IN CASH RESERVE Skewing Mad by Weekly Rank State, seat Regarded aa Reetldentlen of t'nexpeetedly Rla In crease lMmt Week. NEW TORK, Oct. 7. The weekly hank statement nfTcred a warning of the small reliance to be placed on yesterday's late decline In the call money rate as a reflec tion of the situation of the money market. Speculative sentiment was brought to the conclusion that a stiff money market was likely to continue for the Immediate future. nd mere was selling or stocks in conse quence. A group of industrial specialties, mostly among the railroad equipment stocks, 'with American locomotive con spicuous leader, were notable exceptions to the downward tendency. The movement In these was of professional origin quite largely, but had as a substantial basis the extraordinary need or the ranroaos throughout the country for large Increases In facilities to accommodate the flood of traffic which la coming upon them. The strength of this handful of stocks, how ever, was of little effect In sustaining the general market, and the closing wns easy at net declines running to a point or over for many of the prominent active stocks. The decrease m casn snown by tne Dana statement ran 3s,454,70O, thus considerably exceeding the largest of the preliminary estimates based on the known movements of money. This showing Is regarded as a ratification In part of the unexplained In crease In cash reported last week, though the full amount of the discrepancy Is by no means accounted for. The ihowlng strengthens the supposition that gold en gagements have been figuring In bank re serves as soon as made, without waiting for their actual receipt. The effect of the decline In cash on the surplus was modified by the scaling down of the deposits through contraction of IU.SX9.400 in outstanding loans. The Inroad upon the surplus was thus limited to $3,153. 0, bringing that Item down to $4,286,175. The loan contraction la believed to be due largely to the taking over of loans from the banks by out of town institutions, which have drawn on their New York deposits for that purpose during the week. Another withdrawal of $2,000,000 from tha Bank of England for shipment to Egypt showed the drajn upon the depleted reserve of that Institution un relieved and pointed to the maintenance of money rates in foreign markets. LONDON, Oct. 7. Money was In active demand and scarce In the market today. Apparently the Bank of England had ab sorbed the millions In dividends distributed and was taking steps to maintain discount rates, which were firmer. On the Stock exchange business was dull and nqmlnal, partly owing to Its being the eve of the settlement, while the scare regarding the monetary outlook caused gloom In most sections. The present tightness of money Is not regarded as extraordinary, con sidering the requirements for crop moving and other annual needs early In October. Consols and home rails were quiet. Amer icana opened firm, eased somewhat, fluctu ated and closed above the lowest quotations of the day. The other sections were quiet and dull. Business was mostly stagnant. Japanese imperial 6s of 1904 were quoted at 102. PARIS, Oct. 7. Prices on the Bourse to day opened steady, but became Irregular ana aenressea and closed weak. Russian Imperial 4s were quoted at 93.70 and Russian bonds of 1904 at 628. BERLIN, Oct. 7. Prices on the Bourse today opened weak, but became stronger later. . Clearing; Honse Averages. CHICAGO, Oct 7 (SpeclaU-Slnre my last writing conditions have changed ma terially the 8tock mnrket has been ex cessively dull and almost entirely rofes slonal. and the total of dealings In stocks and bonds haa been very unsatisfactory. The range of prices has been narrow, with the exception to be noted In a few special ties, which have been manipulated by spe cialists. Fluctuations hove been governed almost entirely by the money situation. It Is rather peculiar that no decided at tempt was made bv the big oterntors to advance stocks, even after the decided fnlU ure to advanoe the rates was attempted by the Bank of England; hut by virtue of the fact that large gold losses, to both the Bank of France and the Bank of England, were reported, this lack of activity on the part of the big operators may be explained, Considerable Interest haa been dlsplnyed In the position which the large banks and trust companies have taken In the cnlling of heavy loans. A great many speculntors gre of the opinion thnt the money mnrket Is being manipulated. Ot course, It Is ad mitted that this Is the result of the policy of the big financial and hank lnter-xts to curb the extended bull movement that was rumored to come. In the face of the searching Inquiry which has been directed ngalnet the In surance companies and other Institutions equally as strong financially. Aside from the feeder division, where there were a few cattle In the hands of speculators, the yards were empty and deserted. The receipts of cattle have been very heavy this week; In fact, the heaviest of the year so far, and way in excess of the records of a week ago and a year ago. Under the influence of the large runs and excessive supply the market on west ern grass beeves has gradually Banged from Ha own weight and at the close Of the week Is safely Kifo2oc lower than fcne week ago-. The decline has been on the medium kinds principally, which consti tute the big bulk ot the receipts. Strictly choice range beeves have been scarce all the week and they have not shown much change in prices. Corn-fed steers of good quality have also been In very moderate supply and for that reason they have re mained just about steady all the week. The common to medium kinds, which would be affected by the break on grass ers, would have to be Quoted a little lower. Cows and heifers have suffered the most decline of anything during the week. It seemed as if a larger propoitlon of the receipts than usual consisted of that kind of cattle, and while buyers bought freely, thev were tilled up and the muiket grad ually worked downward. At the close of the week the general market on cows and heifers Is all of UiiAiti lower and In extreme cases perhaps 26u lower than t was at the close of last week. Htockers and feeders have been In very large supply all the week, but the demand bas also Deen lurge, bo inat tne luaraei has been In a good, healthy condition from start to finish. Prices on desirable kinds are fully steady with a week ago. Even lltrht cattle. If ot good quality, have been aocut steady, but common, little knotheads are a Utile lower, owing to the fact that there have been a good many here. Representative sales: COWS. Pr. No. Ay. That Is not all. present prorpects would appear to favor the belief that receipts will continue small at this point for another thirty or sixty days. Under the Influence of the moderate run this morning heavy hogs which have been selling in pretty low notches all tha week advanced (yd 10c end the market, was sctlve so that a clearance was made for the llrst time In some days. Light hogs which have shown very little change during the week, that is remaining about stationary while heavv weights were breaking, did not par ticipate In the advance this morning. Most of the heavy hogs went at 34 85S6 10 while light hogs sold on up aa high aa $5 36. Tha hoii market lias been In very unsatis factory condition this week. Packers claim that st the rultng prices for provisions, live hogs ought to be selling on the basis of 84.60 at Chicago. That they believe what they say la shown by their wieager pur chases at all packing points. Were It not I for the support given the market by ship pers and Duysrs ior tne rrcan meat trade there la no doubt but what prices would drop down very rapidly. As It Is the good fresh meat trade In connection with the light receipts is preventing packers from getting prloes down to a point where they would like to see them. So long at packers feel that the market Is too high they are not likely to be free buyers at sny point and the result Is almost certain to be a dull and unsatisfactory market from day to day. After all the pounding that the market has experienced this week prices on an average are only about &87ce lower than a week age. Representative sales WANTED: North American Investment .
