tie expects the premiums on caan wheat
will not continue much larger.
A petition for the doubling of commission
rates on grain and proviHlons will go before
the director of the Chicago Board ot Trade
Tuesday and there will be a subsequent
ballot by the members. If passed upun
favorably the new rates will be a a bushel

these rates to nimnbers of the exchange.
The only change in brokerage contemplated
Is a reduction to 60a per 6,uuu bushel lot of

nrtCAOO. Oct. 1 Buying on a large seal
nrced tip th price of wheat today. Specu-
allye tactics rather than new developments
seemed to sway th course of prices. At
he close wheat for December delivery
howed a net gain of mc compared with
Saturday closing quotations. Corn Is off
c. uti are down provisions ar
practically unchanged
Notwithstanding a number of bearish In
fluences the wheat market was strong
hroughnut the entire season. At the start
he market was affected In the wheat mar
ket to some extent by the steadiness manl-
ested in the wheat market at Liverpool.
Ing to th sharp decline In Chicago.
Saturday, a majority of trader here ex
pected a considerable reaction n price at
foreign grain markets. Cables, however,
failed to confirm the expectation, value
at Liverpool notably being only a trlfl
ower. For December ODeninar Quotation
here were unchanged to Ho higher at WV
83c. From the start a leading bull was
sn active bidder for wheat. As prices ad-
vanced. short started to cover causing still
greater show of strength notwithstanding
the news of the day otherwise wa fvnr
ahle to the hear. Weather In the north
west was generally clear. Receipts at
Minneapolis and Duluth wera aaraln on
liberal volume. World' shipments were
arge and the visible supply showed an In
crease of l.OIS.nno bushels. Nevertheless
the market continued to gain in firmness.
During the last few moment of trading,.
lecemner touched the hlaest nolnt of the
day, sale being made at 41iff!l4ie. The
close was tronjr. with December at 84V.
Clearances of whest and flour were equnl
to 4Z. Bushels. The amount of nasssre
decreased sso.000 bushels. Primary receipts
were 1.071.000 bushels compared with 1.8W1.0H0
bushels a year ago. Minneapolis. ' Duluth
and Chlcsro reported receipts of 1.470 cars
against 1.3" 5 car last week And 1,468 cars
year go.
Sentiment in the corn pit was a trifle
bearish and prices showed moderate de
cline. Perhaps the factor Of greatest In
fluence wa the continuance of excellent
weather for the maturing of late corn.
Another besrlsh factor was a decline at
Liverpool. Several commission houses were
active sellers of May and this had con
siderable effect on the price of other de
liveries The market closed steadv. De
cember opened unchanged to Vie lower at
4V4ciHlc. sold off to 43Vi!43Vc and closed
at 4.THO. Local receipts were 35 Cars with
120 cars of contract grade.
Liberal receipts had a depressing effect
on tHe oats nisrket. Cash houses were the
principal sellers. Th volume of trading
whs small. December opened a shad to
Ke lower at 272 to rnimc and sold off to
27o and closed at ZiH77c. Local receipts
re t:w car.
Provision were steadv as a result of im
proved demand for lard. Prospects of a
liberal reduction In the world's stock of
lard caused the better Inoulry. At th clis
January pork wns unchsnred nt 812 S7H.
Lard was tin 2Htfffie t M ifU. Ribs were
a shad higher at M 47tttff6-50.

Ex-lntereat.
N EW YORK. Oct. J. The course of today
money market Justified last week specula
tive confidence that the tone would relax
after the special requirements from th
close of last week had been met. These
requirements Included those for the turn
of the month and for the quarter and
also for the large syndicate transactions
which were put through. Syndicate pay
ments on the large railroad bond Issue
were evidently re-deposlted Immediately,
and became available In today money
market. Therefore Instead of Friday
rate for call loan above 8 per Cent and
up to 7 per cent, there wa only a momen
tary demand today at 6 per cent, and the
free offerings carried the rate down to 8
per cent. In response to this prices of
securities were Inclined to advance.
Efforts to awaken any animation in the
speculation, however, proved mostly abor
tlve. Movements of any extent were con
fined to Industrial stock of little prom
inence and to a few railroad stocks which
have been the subject of pool operations
ror a long time nast. While the action
of the money market lessened anxiety
regarding any immediate stringency and all
ot the news was calculated to uphold con
fidence In the solid foundation of stocks,
It was felt tiiat actual ease In money
is not to be hoped for at once. Th early
report of additional gold engagements In
London were regarded exaggerated, but
authoritative admissions Justified the con
clusion that rold had been secured there.
This Is enough to prove that the advance
in tne uanK 01 hingiand discount rale was
not to make an effective barrier to the
eecur'ng of further gold for New York.
Septlclsm over the showing of the cash
gain in the Saturday bank statement con
tinued unallayed and the ability of the
clearinghouse Institution to affect another
such showing in face of the tide of the
currency movement was doubted
The extraordinary nature of the railroad
traffic reported by officials offers a clear
Index of the great expansion of credits
and heavy demand for the funds from all
part of the country. These various fac
tors helped to form a conviction that
money rates for the Immediate future are
UKeiy to be sustained at a high level.
Favorable reports of railroad business have
come to be received without surprise In
Wall street, but reports this week had
to resort to such expressions as "deluged I Amor. Wooles
IL-lth fralo-ht " rimli'1 a rtA "nvrhAlniB" J do Dfd ....
In order to convey the Idea of condition,
An advance in the price of copper here
and In London Induced only a narrow
movement in Amalgamated Copper. At the
end of the day some fractional losses were
mixed with the gains, as a result of the
spotty speculations of the day. The prin
cipal activity was confined to the forenoon
session, and prices sagged In the prevailing
dullness or tne arternoon.

CATTLE There wa a liberal run of
cattle ueie luuay, about oik car being
received. Of tnes iltteen cars were bincu
iNroUMii, leaving about 804 cars on sale.
The receipts were about thirty-six cars
lighter tnan last Monday, and aoout ill
curs lighter tuan the same aay last year,
'ine geueiai quality of ttiu cattlo was fairly
good.
Although the run was heavy, still there
were no beer steers included into the re
ceipts and stear buyers nad nothing to
work on. Tnere Is a good demand nero
lor beei, and nad there ueen anyinihg here
today it would have sold wen, as buyer
were out and evidently wanted tills kind
of cattle. Anything good would have
brought strong to Higher prices, while the
commoner grades would have changed
lianas at funy steady prices.
There was a good supply of cows and
heiters on sale and there was considerable
activity to the traxle. The demand wa
..r..i nt the mnif uus ntcxed uu In good
tune. Buyers were riding freely and
evidently wanted supplies. 'Prices bold up
very well and salesmen found little dltli
cuity in disposing of their holdings at
fully steady price.
The big end 01 the receipts consisted of
feeders and there was a good strong de
mand from all source. There was con
siderable activity to the trade and the stuff
was being bought up right along. Prices
for the most part ruled fully siaady and
in some cases a little stronger. Tnere Is
a good demand. at mis point for feeders
and there are plenty of orders to be nlled.
