They had but twenty-two dollars, and with this slender capital they proposed to establish a hospital and eventually to add other institutions. How well these good women have succeeded may be seen in the splendid buildings they and their associates have erected St. Bernard's Hospital, Mercy Hos pital, St. Mary's Home for Young Ladles and the Mt. Loretto Home for the Aged, costing in the aggregate about a quarter of a million dollars, most of which has been saved by the Sisters themselves, with only occasional outside aid. So much has been said and written about this pioneer of Council Bluffs hospitals, that a detailed repetition has been thought unnecessary, but for the sake of properly presenting the history and rapid growth of the various institutions, it is deemed advisable to make mention of a few Interesting facts relative to the different departments. St. Bernard's Hospital Is devoted exclusively to the care of Insane and nervous patients; Mercy Hospital is given up to three debarments medical, surgical and obstetrical. The surgical department is equipped with one of the most modern operating rooms in the west. The success of this department bespeaks in most convincing terms of the cure, skill and thoroughness exercised by those in charjje. A department of general Interest is the Accouchement Room for in the founding of the new Mercy Hos pital, it was the desire of the promoters of the institution to place and equip within its walls a department where both unfortunate and respectable women might be skillfully treated. In the pro mulgation of this principle the sisters have furnished and equipped this department with the same care and skill which has ever characterized their work, as in this way they hope to teach us that obstetrics is one of the most important branches of medicine; that is should rank with surgery in the recognition given it In the hospitals, and by the public. St Mary's Home provides wholesome associations for working girls, who find it necessary to be away from their own homes, and the Mt. Loretto Home for the Aged offers a delightful place, where those who have grown old in life's Journey may retire as to a quiet harbor, secure from the storms of the busy world outside, and blessed with every op portunity to end their days in peace. All of these properties are very favorably sultated for the work In hand, being within easy walking distance of the street cars and at the same time Just far enough removed from the bustle and turmoil of the business dis trict to afford that quiet and repose which is so necessary for such institutions. St. Bernard's Hospital has enjoyed the patronage of the state, county and city authorities for many years In the care of public charges, and has given uniform satisfaction. Mercy Hos pital, recently erected, is acknowledged to be one of the finest hospitals In the West, being provided with every advantage in the way of construction, and managed by Sisters who add to their heroic self-sacrlflce a long experience gained in the care of the sick mere money could not buy the service they render; only the infinitely higher motive of a Heaven-sent task impels them to their arduous and unselfish labors. A training school for nurses is con ducted in connection with the hospital, and the success of Its graduates bears ample testimony to the care with which candi dates are selected, and the thoroughness with which they are trained. The successful person In any calling Is always the object of the closet scrutiny, for "nothing succeeds Ilk. success." Th reason for flattering success of the Sisters of Mercy in Council Bluffs is to be found in their strict attention to the details of their work, in their long experience, and particularly in their splendid trust in God, upon whose providence they have ever relied, even to the very practical extent of never having turned away a single deserving case, irrespective of race, creed, or color, regardless of the patient's nbllity to pay, and this, too, during periods of finan cial stringency, when long-headed business men would have deemed It ruinous to incur Increased risk without prospect of reimbursement. But the. sisters have been true to their calling and their name mercy has been their guiding principle, and their splendid success is the more delightful because it vindicate, their confidence In Divine Providence, and affords an irrefutable proof in an age of tight-fisted financial competition that even a cup of water given in His name will not be forgotten. Seated on an eminence overlooking the city, these institutions may well be cherished, not alone for their tangible results In the care of the unfortunate, but quite as much for the high Ideals they champion, and the splendid example they set for mercy, charity, and love for fellowinan. Greetings to His Royal Highness M Greeting to Ak-Sar-Ben I by Mayor Bemis OST MIGHTY POTENTATE: The city of Omaha welcomes the return of Ak-Sar-Ben, king of Quivers, to the domain that bis predecessors discovered and that has become so prosperous and so happy. In doing so we feel that the In fluence' of that great spirit, whose dauntless courage sought out the soil of Nebraska while it was yet a part of the kingdom of guivera, has left Its Impress here, and will stimulate our trade and commerce, so that we shall keep step with the progress of the' age; uud since your royal highness has signified hla intention of visiting these, his loyal subjects, every year at the time of the Feast of Moinlumin, and while our state fair is in session, I, as the ruler of this. city, in behalf of our citizens, hereby surrender the key of the city to your care and keeping, and hope that your royal highness may not only be able to unlock all the storehouses of royalty and hospitality, but that this key will unlock the hearts and minds of these people and open them to a broader and higher conception of true citizenship and patriotic loyalty to the best Interests, not only of our greut ajid growing metropolis, but of the state at large. Greeting to Ak-Sar-Ben III by Mayor Moores ON THI8 great and auspicious occasion the great city of Omaha ends greeting to your royal highness, the king of Ak-Sar-Ben the Third and all your loyal subjects. Receiving as we did an unlimited amount of pleasure and headache from your former visitations, we have looked forward with a keen anticipation to the time when we could again see your smiling face and view your magnificent and triumphal entry into our city with chariot, bedecked with gold and silver and accompanied, by these most beautiful of all beautiful living pictures. With the bountiful crop, and general prosperity abroad In the land on every hand, more than ever have we awaited your coming with great chunks of pleas ure, feeling that well could we afford to present your majesty with the great key to the city ef Omaha, even at the risk of having to issue more of the 4 M per cent bonds. We might forget the little man who plays the big drum in the Salvation Army, or even the air lift a. it goes on merrily lifting 139 gallons a minute into the lagoon at thw great Transmlsslsslppi exposition grounds, but this scene never the memory of this glided Splendor red fire and smoke, like the injunction, will remain with us forever. Omaha may well unbuckle her belt and swell up with pride on being favored by such a royal personage as your majesty. Never before on earth has there been such a display of wealth, harmony and beauty as we see in you and your subjects, even surpassing the startling effect of the paint on the roof of the court house. We will become accustomed to your maids of honor, But should we appear rude at first or possibly turn our faces to the wall and weep, do not Judge us too harshly, for we are a bashful people and our eyes are unfamiliar with such a gorgeous display of fascinating beauty and form, divine. We are here tonight partly on account of our unamerican, in contestable desire to bow before royalty and partly to give unto your majesty the great key to and the freedom of our city. The M only request we have to make is that you will please return them both in good order. And as Nero said when he sat on his throne and fiddled away while the old town of Rome burned, so say I unto you: "There will be a hot time in the old town tonight." Greeting to Ak-Sar-Ben IV by Mayor Moores OST Gracious and Beneficent King Ak-Sar-I3en IV, Monarch' of Alhanibra and Duke of the Seen Cities of Cibola, Greet ing: One year ago your illustrious father, King Ak-Sar-Ben ill, visited our city accompanied by his royal retinue. He found his kingdom flourishing. The royal treasuries were sup plied, the bins were filled with choicest grain, and the stalks of corn stood thick upon the ground, groaning under their heavy load of golden ears, waiting to be gathered; all the wheels of Industry were moving; prosperity had returned to the stricken lands and all the subjects of the king were glad. But however pleasing was the sight which met the eyes of your illustrious father, the lamented King Ak-Sar-Ben III, the sight which meets your vision, O Most Puissant Monarch, is more marvelous and more glorious still. The cycle of the seasons have made another revolution and now again the ' royal revenues are full to overflowing, the bins are bursting with grain and once again the bending corn stalks plead to be relieved of their heavy burden. Prosperity has come to stay. One year ago the people of your kingdom were planning with fear and trembling a great exposition to be held at the capital of the realm to display to the world the magnificent resources of your majesty's domain and the splendid intelligence and thrift of these, your majesty's subjects. That grand exposition is now completed and awaits your majesty's coming. Today you come with this gorgeous pageant, illustrating the stately architecture and magnificent trappings of an almost forgotten past; an age of lovely women and brave men; an age of art and manufacture. Your loving subjects Invite you to visit this great ex position that they have prepared. All these rich material treasures are yours, but your most price less possessions are these, your majesty's subject., who present to you these golden keys to this, the capital of your majesty', realm, in token of their allegiance, and shout tonight with loud and loyal acclaim, "Long live King Ak-Sar-Ben IV, the greatest and most ben eficent monarch the world has ever known. Long live the King!" Greeting to Ak-Sar-Ben X by Acting Mayor Zimman ONORED SIRE: To stand before your majesty causes me to tremble to such an extent I scarce can speak. Pardon, there fore, your highnebs. my faltering words as I haste to inform you that I cannot hand you the various keys you demand for the reason that the locks on everything in the city have been carefully removed and all key. thrown into the Missouri river, in expectation of your coming, thus rendering your liege city In reality a wide open town on this happy occasion. In conclusion. It is my high privilege, in the name of the city of Omaha, to extend you and your court most royal greeting and on this fiftieth anniversary of our state and the tenth anniversary of your kingly line to wish that due success and prosperity may continue to attend Ak-Sar-Ben.
