HOME OF THE
SUGAR
BEET
Sooth Platte Faat Taking Lead as
Beat Locality for This Valua
ble Product.
The Platte valley Is looming op as ths
great beet sugar producer of the United
States, which leads to the Idea that the
Harrlman lines are doing all that they can
to foster this Industry. Sixty per cent of
the beet sugar factories of the United
States are located on the Harrlman line.
There are on the Harrlman lines In Cali
fornia seven. In Colorado seven, and an
other being built, in Idaho three, in Ne
braska two, In Oregon two. In Utah seven,
In Washington one, besides which there
are ten In course of construction at present
on the lines of this system. Tha dally
capacity of the . factories mentioned la
23,460 tons. r '
The Japanese Industrial organisation of
Ban Francisco has bud agents at Grand
Inland with a view of securing 1.008 acres
In that vicinity for the raising of sugar
beets. The capacity of tha Grand Island
factory Is 360 tons per day and of the
Leavltt factory 1,100 tons.
At the Irrigation congress held at Port
land a resolution was adopted saying that
the Irrigated lands tn the semi-arid dis
tricts of the west are especially adapted
to the raising of sugar beets.
