Such re call was In force on a large scale today by the banks. The conditions of the banks as they stood In the showing of the Satur day bank statement and the heavy credit requireroenta to be met this week are abundant explanation for the course of the banks In contracting loans, without taking account of the renewal cf the drain on their cash reserves which was set up again with the opening of the week. Be tween now and the close of the week pay ments are to be made of an Installment of subscription of Atchison convertible bonds, which calls for 8!2.0n0.uoO and to an Install ment of subscriptions to Pennsylvania con vertible bonds which calls for 35O,0OO,0(iO except as modified by payments in full already made. As the mouth closes with the week, provision must also be made for the quarterly settlements, the require ments for which are unusually large this year. Tne calling of loans was allowed by preparation fur the accommodation of these needs. At one time the benefit se cured by the hanks last week from sub treasury payments has ben reversed by the completion of the mid-month penRlon Iymenls. ' Today's subtreasury statement shows a loss already by the banks of 11,049.000 and the government Institution had a large credit balance at the clearing house this morning. In addition $300,mi0 was deposited at the sub-treasury to be transferred by telegraph to St. Louis. The assertions circulated on Saturday that 85.- w.tioii was already on the way to San Francisco in Australian gold found no con firmation, although conditions pointed to the possibility of such a movement. Asncr Hons of additional gold purchased today In London for New York was verified only after the market closed by the announce ment of about 8Jl.BMMf.0iMt secured. Foreign exchange rose quite sharply in this market and the price of gold was marked up In London. News of general affairs continued favor able, but the uniformity of recent reports 01 increasing tranic was varied this ween by damage caused by the flood In the southwest. The recent annual report of the Atchlaon and the heavy losses for the year mere snown irom tne damage by nood, forced the Influence of the news. The fail ure of the St. Paul stockholders to take action towards Issuing new stock, caused disappointment on the part of a party of speculators who have counted very oonfl denlly on such action. The announcement of the closing of a bank of Kansas City was of some sentimental Influence but it was understood that there waa no prob ability of loss. The trading in stocks be came very oun at times out it was only in the pauses of liquidation and when the market was active, prices declined. The closing Irregular but near the lowest. Beef Bteers were 1n good supply today, but with big runs at other market point and reports rather discouraging buyer her, were in a brish mood and were asking concession. There were plenty of cattle for them to pick from and they were rather indifferent about taking on supplies. They were not riding very freely and there wa little life to the trade. Salesmen found It diffi cult to move their cattle and were com pelled to take off some on the price. The general steer trade wa right at BfglOc lower, although some of the best west ern did not show quite that much loss. The few natives on sale were in a little better demand, but values ruled weak. There were not many cowl and heifers on sale today, but there was a weak tone to the trade and prices were a little lower. There wa little activity to the trade and the stuff was Blow In moving. Buyers were asking for lower prices and as sales men did not feel like making nny con cessions trading was Blow. Some of the beat cows brought right close to steady prices, but th commoner grades were weak to a shade lower. Bulls, veal calves and stag also felt the general decline and prices were lower. There was a rood supply of stocker and feeders In the yards and while there were plenty of orders to be filled and a good demand, still prices were lower on the general run of stuff. Good, heavy, fleshy feeder ruled about steady, but the lighter weight and common grade were lower.
