Chicago wheat speculators think Armour
has some Information about the foreign
crop and probable demand, which the trade
In general does not have. By this they ac
count for the support Armour Is giving the
market In the face of the free spring
wheat movement.
Strong Interests have been buying May
corn for four days and a big line has
been accumulated. Klevator Interests
which recently bought May and sold De
cember when the two months were to
gether three weeks ago, were yesterday
buying December and selling May, watch
ing for hard spots to see the latter, and
preferring to have their hedges out In
May. The December-May spread was o
Wednesday night, against Vc Tuesday.
On the crop condition the Price Current
aays: "There Is betterment In the posi
tion of the corn crop notwithstanding more
drawbacks from rain. Any liability now
of Injury from nard frost chiefly relates lo
damage to quality of Immature grain. The
high record as to quality Is reassured.
Considerable wheat seeding Is In progress,
rains somewhat Interfering."

CHICAGO. Sent. 71 -Allegations of
threatened famine In Russia caused firm
ness today In the Wheat market here. At
the close wheat for December delivery wss
up Sic. Corn Is practically unchanged.
Oats show a gain of Sc. provisions are a
shade to 7vc higher.
Sentiment In the wheat pit was bullish
the entire session. At the opening Iecm
ber was up S$Sc to at MVaWfcO.
The advance was largely due to a sharp
rise In price at Liverpool ostensibly the
result of reports to the effect that Russia
Is face to face with the worst famine which
the csar'a country has ever experienced.
The market here was further strengthened
by higher prices at Minneapolis, following
a decreased movement In that section. As
a result the Iecember option advanced in
sympathy to s6Sc Strength of cash wheat
at all grain centers tended to encourage
the purchase of futures here. During the
last hour the market lost part of the
strength Uiat hsd developed, Dei-ember
selling off to 84H4i4e. A report that the
Spanish government had relmposed a duty
on Imports of wheat was partly responsible
for' the reaction. . The tiiarket. however,
closed quite firm, with December at 84"'u
844e. Clearances of wheat and flour were
equal to 2uS,5o0 bu. Primary receipts were
1.O14.000 bu., compared with I.IM.ko bu. a
year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chi
cago reported receipts of 734 cars, against
67" cars last week and S64 cars a year ago.
A firm tone prevailed In the corn market
as a result of un active demand from com
mission and cash houses. Buying for for
eign account was again a feature, a lot of
corn being reported worked here for ex
port via the Gulf of Mexico. The close
was firm. December opened unchanged to
o higher at 4."Vj.4!jHc, sold up to 46Sc and
cloned at 46S4t46ec. Local receipts were 408
cars, with ISO cars of contract grade.
The market for oats was strong and ac
tive. Continued reports of good demand
for export were responsible for much of
the firmness. December opened MiSc to Vi
He higher at 2!i3 ISVtiC, sold between Zi
c and 24C. and closed at WvttlBc. Local
receipts were 22 cars.
Provisions were steady notwithstanding
6c decline In live hogs. Shorts were mod
erate bidders, but offering were small. At
the close January pork was up 7He at 112.38;
inra was a ansae nigner at t. Jiwat su, ana
ribs were up 6c at 8 47S.
Estimated recelnts for tomorrow: Wheat.

SOME CONSTRAINT DEVELOPS LATER
Marking Ip tha Call Moaeg

Resalt.
NEW YORK, SepL 21 Today's early
stock market had an appearance of con
siderable strencth and animation and spe
cial stocks made striking advances, much
In the manner of yesterday's market. Some
constraint developed In the later opera'
tions and the rate of activity fell away
very materially. The marking up of the
call money rate was the potential Influ
ence In this result. Deals ana rumors or.
deals played a large part In the principal
movements or tne oar. wnicn were in
tocka supposed to be In the hsnds of pools
or susceptible readily to manipulation.
Both Canadian Pacific and Reading were
prominent features during the day. Pub'
cation of the Reading annual report
proved the high earning power of that
road, but it was obvious that previous
peratlons In1 the stock were based on
nowiedge of the facts of the report. Louis-
llle Nashville also was brougni into
prominence. The question of the lodgment
of control of the Cincinnati, Hamilton &
ayton was settled by the official announce
ment that the Erie was the purchaser, but
he Erie stocks were conspicuously ex
empt from the day's demand. Rumor con-
Inued very active with the alleged project
of a new Issue of Great Northern preferred
to the present stockholders and BL Paul
figured in a number of Impending issues
of $3,000,000 of authorised stock with sub
scription privileges to stockholders. Many
ol the day s active movements are thus
seen to be traceable to Individual causes.
The money market again demonstrated
that Its actual position is growing Inde
pendent of the conditions of the clearing
house banks. Rates for call money were
firm and higher, although time loans were
raueo somewnat easier, tne demand tor
hat kind of accommodation having sut-
slded somewhat. Yet subtreasury opera
tions this week have yielded to the banks
over $1,000,000 compared with a loss for
the corresponding period last week of
$5,668,000, Indicating an advantage In this
week's showing of 27.00O.0OO over last week.
The Interior demand has also relaxed. This
seems to Indicate that the banks are re
lieved from the necessity of calling loans
In order to keep within the reserve limit.
It Is assumed, therefore, that tha harden
ing tone of money must have to do with
the disposition of the trust companies'
funds, rather than with those of the banks.
The retention of the Bank of England
rate was a favorable faotor In the day's
market, as It had been aulte commonly
expected that It would be advanced In
order to shift New York demand for gold
upon Paris. A renewed fall In foreign
exchange here resulted, but the decline was
not sumcient to reach the point of profit
for further engagement of gold for im
port. Discounts rose In Berlin and Paris.
The Irregular tone of the latter market
continued tip to the close.

CATTLE There was another big run to
day, about 166 cars being on sale, but the
receipts were some thirty-tnree cars ugnier
than the same day last year. The quality
of cattle was good, but the stuff was very
slow in getting in and at 11 o'cigick there
was still about twenty-five loads uaoK.
There were a good many beef steers held
over from vesterdav and there was a lib
eral supply today, making more cattle than
the trade required. The receipts nave Den
heavy all the week and buyers are pretty
'well filled up and today, as a consequence
they were Indifferent on most kinds. JBuy

In taking hold, and trading from the start
was very slow and dull, with nothing like
activity displayed at any time during the
day. There were some native cattle in the
yards, but buyers did not want them and
sellers had to do a good deal of peddling
and lake lower prices to get rid of them.
Buyers were riding freely but only picking
up a load now and then. Western cattle
were also pounded for a decline and moved
very slowly. The market on both natives
and westerns were off fully a dime and in
some cases more.
There were not many cows and heifers
on sale and the trade as a consequence was
a little better. Buyers wanted a few cattle
and showed a desire to pick up some of the
good kinds at strong prices, which they
did, while they bought the fair to medium
grades steady and the common kinds
lower.
Bulls, veal calves and stags also felt the
general weakness and prices were lower,
