MONEY SITUATION IS EASIER Ramor of Important Development In Xorthera Srearltle Matters Caasea RIs la that Great, NEW YORK. Pept 20.-Noth!ng In th news which became public today would ac count adequately for th reversal of specu lative sentiment from yesterday's depres sion. But the rebound In price was an ef fective demonstration of the resllencv of ,ne market from pressure. It proves the nnnn uun iit-tiiii gno11. in low lieiriiur- hood of the Stock exchange that the float ing supply of stocks I scarce and profes sional bear traders find difficulty In cover ing their short contracts. Considerable lines of short were put yesterday and th buy ing to get back these stocks probably waa most responsible for today's advance. Th market continued narrow and pro fesajonal. The spectacular advance In a limited number of stocks Is not convincing of a widespread demand In the market In general ana commission houses continue to complain that the outaM demand la scanty. Holders cling to their stocks, however, and nothing seems effective to dlalodg holdings except the actual withdrawal of credit by which they are held. Th Immediate pres sure on borrowers has become relaxed and the general outlook continues so favorable that further selling of stocks seems to be expected unless the hardening tendency of the money market shall be renewed. The course of the currencv movement thus far this week makes It unlikely that the coming bank statement will show any potable shrinkage In the cash reserves and the trust companies are therefor relieved for the moment from the call to take over loans from the banks In order to enable the latter to scale down deposit liabilities to keep pace on Inroad on their cash. The eubtreasury's heavy debit balances at the clearing house haa left a small balance to the advantage ot the banks on the week thus far. Foreign stock markets seemed to conclude today that the expected rise to morrow In the Bank of England discount rat has been adequately provided against. Reassuring official atatementa regarding th Moroccan question relieved apprehension on that point. The New York market was In consequence freed from the pressure of for eign selling and this contributed materially toward allowing tne recovery in price. The most notable movement of th day were traceable to Individual Influences. Re ports of Important development In the Northern Securities settlement were re vived effectively In connection with th ap proaching annual meetings of the Or eat Northern and Northern Pacific The rise In that group of stocks stimulated some sym pathetic strength In other hlgh-prloed rail road stocks. The notorious existence of an active speculative pool In Reading was given most of the credit for the renewed spurt In that stock. ' The organ of the an thracite trade, however, spoke in ft rery cheerful strain of the demand in that In dustry. The annual report of th Central Railroad of New Jerssy wa a help to that group. In the same way New York Cen tral wa aided by Its statement of quarterly earnings. The revived strength of Canadian Paolflo was due to reports of prosperous condition, which have served before to lift that stock. Rates for foreign exchange rose decidedly away from the gold Import point. Time money rates were called some what easier, but call loan rates were held firmly at above 3 per cent. Ronds were firm. Total sales, par value. $:.670.m United States Zs registered a cllned on call. Following wer th sales and rang of prices on the Stock exchange today: B&ies.iign.i'Uw.iiio. Tne receipts were some 103 cars heavier than last Wednesday and some thirty-two car lighter than the same day last year. The general quality of the cattle was good. There was a fair sprinkling of native stuff on sale and there were some good cat tle offered. Buyers seemed to want the cornfeds more than they did the westerns and there was a little better feeling on them, although buyers were In a bearish mood all the morning and there was a weak tone to tha trad all through. Buyers wer not anxious for cattle of any class and the movement could not be called active at any time. Prices on native stuff were generally weak to a little lower, while the common kinds were off a dime. Western cattle wer In good supply but buyers were not overly anxious for them and they did not change hands very rapidly. The general market on these kinds was oft CrfllOc. with the com moner kinds feeling the full benefit of the decline. Cows and heifers were in fair supply to day, but tha demand waa not active and trading was slow. Buyers pounded the she stuff yesterday and were In a bearish mood again today, so that conditions were against selling Interests. The general cow trad was 5910c lowei and some of the common kinds were off even more than this. Bulls, veal calves and stags were also weak snd prices were lower. There was a good srfbply of stockers and feeders here, and while there was a good call for the stuff, buyers wer Inclined to be bearish and trading was rather slow at lower prices. Good, fleshy feeders were weak, while the general run of stuff was weak sales: to a dime lower. Representative BEEF STEERS. No. 14 I 1 14 II Is U I 6 At. Hi.
