ination before United States Commissioner
Anderson Tuesday afternoon and was
bound over to the federal grand Jury In
$2,000. He expects to be able to secure ball
within a few days.
The principal witnesses in the case ure
Superintendent C. E. Burmelster of the
money order department. Assistant Pint
master J. I. Woodard, Captun I'attlck
Mostyn of the police department and Post
office Inspector Moore. Each of these wit
nesses gave their own recognisance tn $1M
each to appear before the grand Jury in

Riley admitted Tuesday morning that his
peculations had extended over a consid
erable period and that the money had not
all been taken at once. He said:
"I wish to deny the asssrtlon that the
money was lost In gambling. I never won
or lost $6 by any gambling game In my
whole life."
Pressed as to what he had done with the
money he said:
"It all went to the support of my family
and for actual expenses."
The court room was crowded Tuesday
afternoon during Riley's arraignment anil
a very general sympathy Is expressed for
him. He has not yet secured an attorney.
He still presents the same haggard appear

A green parrot In the shoe shop of Wil
liam McCrum. 1706 St. Mary's avenue, bit

Inflicted a painful wound after Shlenk per
sisted In abusing and threatening both Mr.
McCrum and the bird, so the shoe man
states.
According to report Shlenk raised quite
a disturbance In the store, after which he
was forclbl yejected by McCrum and
and assistant. In the melee Shlenk
received a blow In the head, was
attended at the police station by the
police surgeons and then booked as a sus
picious jcharacter. McCrum will appvr
against Shlenk In police court Wednesday
morning.
McCrum's stort Is that Bhlenk. who Is
a stranger, came Into the shop to have a
pair of shoes repaired. While waiting for
the shoes to be fixed Shlenk, so McCrum
says, busied himself abusing the cobbler
and the parrot, the latter being a privileged
character around the shop, where the bird
runs loose. After chafing under the abuse
of Shlenk, the bird made a grab for
Shlenk's finger. This so angered Shlenk
that he threatened both McCrum and the
poll parrot, Mr. McCrum maintains. Then
the shoe man sailed In for Shlenk and
Shlenk sailed in for McCrum with a knife,
which McCrum says he took away from
the stranger after a struggle.
Bhlenk finally was taken out of the shop
and the police notified. Mr. Parrot fol
lowed the combatants outslds of the
shop and It was with some difficulty that
the bird was restrained from further taking
up his master's cause.
In the mlxup Shelnk was struck over the
head by one of McCrum's fists. The
Fremont's man's Injuries are not serious.
The parrot will be subpoenaed to appear
in police court Wednesday morning.
WALSH'S FISH AND BEAR YARNS

James Walsh of Benson has Just returned
from the Pacific coast, where he has been
rusticating several weeks with his family.
He took tn tha Portland exposition and
then went Into the mountains hunting
grouse and pheasants and did the fishing
act tn the Columbia river. He has a fish
story that he claims Is original and has
several affidavits of credible witnesses to
prove Its truthfulness. He says he caught
seventeen salmon, all himself, the smallest
weighing six pounds, and as evidence he
brought them all home with him and he Is
treating all the commission men, their em
ployes and traders, with a genuine salmon
dinner at Peter Bolsen's In the Board of
Trade building. But Mr. Walsh's adven
tures did not stop here. He armed himself
with the only gun he could borrow In the
neighborhood, a double-barreled, old-fashioned,
muxxle-loader, cap-lock shotgun, one
barrel being disabled, and want out Into
the mountains hunting grouse and pheas
ants. He bagged them In great numbers.
"And." says Mr. Walsh. "Just as I was
In the midst of this sportsman's paradise
I stumbled upon the trail of a bear. That
bear must have been an old timer. His
feet were that big (Indicating about as
large as a small door mat) and I followed
that track up the mountain side, up, up, up,
and finally It turned off onto the dry, hard
rocks and I could trace It no further. I
felt I had done my duty, heaved a sigh of
relief and quit. I brought all tha game
home except the bear."

Hannah Riley McCarthy, 96 years of sge,
appeared In police court Tuesday morning
as complaining witness against her aged
husband, Charles McCarthy of Thirteenth
and Mason streets. The case was heard
Tuesday morning, but Police Judge Berka
haa reserved his decision until Court Ser
geant Whelan ahall have made an Investi
gation of the case In the McCarthy neigh
borhood. Mrs. McCarthy told the Judge her hus
band had tried to choke her, had knocked
violently on her door and had on a number
of recent occasions called her vile names
through her keyhole. The old woman fur
ther explained that her husband had since
lsst Christmas day lived alone In a small
building in the rear of the McCarthy yard,
while she had remained at the old stand.
